Glenelg boys' lacrosse (17-2) survived a late scare from Hereford (14-5) in the Class 2A state title game to claim the program's fifth state title. Senior Tim lannarino led the way for the Gladiators with five goals, scoring four in the first half. Up 8-7 in the fourth quarter, his brother Chris popped a crucial faceoff in a tight contest to kill a penalty and stopped the Hereford run. Coach Josh Hatmaker never doubted his star. "Once he got the ball on his stick, you're not getting it out. He's not a faceoff guy, but that one that he popped right there was huge." Goalie Zach Coughlin made a crucial save to set up a Chase Buscher goal to make it 10-7 with 6:41 on the clock. Coughlin made four of his nine saves in the fourth quarter, and Brandon Klopp scored two goals and tallied an assist in the win. Coach Hatmaker credits the team's success to his senior leadership. "They were so level-headed in terms of what their goals were. They came to work every single day." He knew his team was special after a loss to Severna Park. Glenelg had six minutes of penalties in the first quarter and found themselves down 6-1. They kept competing and played great lacrosse even in a loss. "Our kids just kept coming at you," coach Hatmaker added. After the loss to Severna Park, Glenelg only lost one more game the entire season. They ended the season on a 14-game win streak, including a win over two-time defending champion Kent Island in the semifinals. Instead of playing lacrosse, star seniors Timmy and Chris lannarino are going to the Coast Guard next year. "I couldn't be more proud of them going to serve our country and doing great things," coach Hatmaker said. Glenelg brings back some production from last season, including several all-county players. The return of Shane DuBois, a first team all-state selection, along with goalie Zach Coughlin should make Glenelg one of the best defensive teams in the conference. Glenelg will look to defend its title, even with the "target on our back."
