Heading into the final month of the regular season, Montgomery County has five schools that have reached double-digit win titans, while Whitman remains undefeated at 11-0. Fresh off a week off from last week’s snowstorm, high-stakes games are starting as early as today. Beyond top-tier games, multiple teams are vying for the county’s top spot. Here are the most important storylines that are emerging from Montgomery County Girls Varsity Basketball: 1. The county’s top tier teams are playing other top tier teams. On Monday, the first day back, 9-5 Walter Johnson will travel to face 11-1 Churchill, while 9-3 Wootton will host the Whitman Vikings, looking to give the team their first loss. Also this week, Magruder will travel to Sherwood, Clarksburg will face Poolesville, Walter Johnson will go to Quince Orchard, and Wootton will face Churchill. With that said, the undisputable game of the month will happen this Wednesday, as the county’s top teams, the 11-1 Bulldogs will face off against the 11-0 Vikings. The winner is set to take the MoCo lead. 2. While the top teams will play the top teams, programs on the other end of the standings will also face off against each other. The 1-10-1 Wheaton Knights will face off against a 1-11 Northwood squad on Monday evening. Northwood will then travel to take on the 3-9 Blair Blazers while Seneca Valley faces Watkins Mill. These are just a few of the games that the bottom county teams are set to face, all of which will happen in the first week back. 3. The Einstein Titans have been killing their divisional opponents. Throughout the season, five of eight of their wins came against in-region rivals. Out of their final eight games, six will be against their regional opponents, with the other two coming against Watkins Mill and Wootton in two of the final three weeks of the season. Despite dropping three of their last five, the Titans have a great opportunity to rise up the county standings. 4. Wootton’s final eight opponents looks to cause several problems. Each of their next four games will come against teams with winning records, including 11-0 Whitman, 7-6 Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 11-1 Churchill, and 7-4 Quince Orchard. Then, after games against Northwest and Blake, the Patriots will finish their season on the road against 9-5 Walter Johnson and at home against 8-4 Einstein. As the team looks to get to double-digit wins, these final eight games may keep them from getting beyond eleven, but taking two to three of the six should be considered a win for Wootton.
Entering February, Montgomery County teams have had no action for over a week, with most team’s last games dating back to January 21. With three weeks to go in the regular season, the county will enter February with twelve teams holding a winning record, including an undefeated Whitman squad and two others with just one loss, Magruder and Poolesville. In the season’s final three weeks before the postseason kicks off, here are the top storylines to watch for in Montgomery County Varsity Boys Basketball: 1. Four of Whitman’s (11-0) final games will come against teams with +.500 records, as the Vikings are set to play Sherwood and Richard Montgomery at home while they will travel to Walter Johnson and Damascus. Thus far, Whitman has only played three throughout the entire season, two of which were in the team’s first two games of the year. They took down now 8-4 Blair by 15, followed by an eight point win over 9-3 Kennedy, but competition has since slowed down. Most recent games included 27-point wins over both 0-13 Gaithersburg and 1-11 Clarksburg. Junior Max Williams and senior Bobby Zedak are both averaging 16.5 PPG for the Vikings, and will need to keep performing at a high level if the Vikings want to remain undefeated as they look to avenge two consecutive state championship losses. 2. The game of the season for Montgomery County teams is yet to take place, and it won’t come until the final day of the regular season. Magruder (12-1) is set to travel to Poolesville (11-1) in the last game of the season on February 20. Prior to that, both teams have high-stakes match ups, as the Colonels are also set to rematch the 8-4 Paint Branch Panthers at home on Friday. The Panthers handed Magruder their lone loss, coming in a 62-48 road defeat. So far, Magruder has six wins over +.500 teams. Poolesville (11-1) is riding a 10 game win streak but they have not played a +.500 team in over three weeks. Their most recent game against a team with a winning record was against the 8-4 Seneca Valley Raiders, where they won by 20 points. The Falcons are set to face Northwest (7-7) and Clarksburg (1-11) before a rematch on the road against the Raiders, which is set to tip off on Friday at 7:15. 3. Five teams, Seneca Valley, Damascus, Walter Johnson, Paint Branch, and Blair all currently sit at 8-4. Out of these five, Paint Branch has the hardest schedule, with five games scheduled against winning teams, including 9-3 Kennedy, 11-3 Blake, and 12-1 Magruder while Blake has the easiest with just three, those being 9-3 Richard Montgomery, 9-3 Kennedy, and 7-5 Sherwood. Damascus comes in second, followed by Seneca Valley and Walter Johnson. 4. The Gaithersburg Trojans, who are yet to capture their first win this season have several chances before the end of the season to avoid a totally winless campaign. After tomorrow’s game against 12-1 Magruder, they’re set to travel to Paint Branch to take on the 3-8 Panther on Wednesday. Following that game, they’ll host the 3-10 Springbrook Blue Devils on Friday, and then the 2-11 Northwood squad to wrap up their season on February 20. Both of Northwood’s wins came against 1-11 teams, as they took down Rockville at home by five points in Mid-December, and Einstein on the road by seven on January 14. 5. Four teams in the East are separated by just one game in league play, with Blake and Magruder at 4-1 while Sherwood and Paint Branch sit at 3-2. Each team will face two of the others by the end of this week with the final of the three before the season’s end. Apart from divisional games, Blake will have a three-game stretch where they play 0-13 Gaithersburg, 6-6 Bethesda-Chevy Chase, and 4-8 Wootton. Sherwood will play 3-10 Springbrook in their first game back from the week off, but they will finish their season against 11-0 Whitman, 8-4 Blair, and 8-4 Walter Johnson. Finally, Paint Branch will host 8-4 Damascus and will travel to face 9-4 Kennedy in two of their final three games of the regular season. A big shakeup could be coming in the East division before playoffs begin!

Though low scoring, the Falcons ultimately seized the 48-44 victory to improve to 5-1 and tie for fourth in the county standings. The Panthers opened up an early 9-2 lead, thanks to a deep three and some free throw opportunities. Poolesville’s zone defense, combined with Paint Branch’s nifty cutting and quick finishing caught the Falcons off guard. Ryan Bobb hit his stride early for Paint Branch after being a huge factor for the Falcons in the second half of their game against Blake. Bobb was a consistent scorer from both deep and the midrange Monday, and even earned himself a trip to the free throw line early. His efforts accounted for the Panthers’ 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. It didn’t take long for the Falcons to get back in the game, however. Poolesville embarked on a rapid 8-0 run to seize the lead, and it was all done inside the arc. But the Panthers didn’t back down from this sudden explosion, using some of its own physicality to assert itself inside. A tough drive and and-one finish capped off a 6-0 run of their own to give them a 24-18 lead. Paint Branch ultimately led 28-25 at the halftime break. Armaan Jain was the catalyst for many of Poolesville’s scores late in the period, asserting himself on drives to the cup and contorting his body around defenders. Jordan Smith tied things immediately coming out of the break with a corner three. But after that, it took over two minutes before the next bucket was scored by either team. Jain potted the next bucket on a fastbreak to give the Falcons their first lead. Poolesville’s aggressive drives weren’t met with much resistance down the stretch — yet, Paint Branch found a way to keep pace. Despite being down 38-30 as the third quarter’s end approached, the Panthers slowly found a way to claw back as time ticked down, hitting multiple free throws. Paint Branch tied the game with four minutes to play, and then cut the score to 42-41 with a clutch and-one bucket with 2:43 left. An extremely timely corner three pushed that advantage to four on the next possession, and that score remained until the final minute. With 15 seconds left, Bobb had some last-second heroics left in him, unleashing a double-covered, fadeaway three that sunk right through the net. But still being down one, Paint Branch was forced to foul. And while Poolesville calmly hit its free throws, Paint Branch ultimately failed to respond, resulting in the loss. Poolesville is next set to take on Clarksburg on Jan 6.

From Assistant Coach Derrick G. Hamlin Centennial High School’s junior varsity football team made history on Friday night, securing their first JV football win in seven years with a decisive 20–0 victory over Poolesville High School. The shutout also marked Centennial’s first homecoming win in more than 15 years, electrifying the Eagles’ home crowd. Despite being one of the smallest teams in Maryland—dressing only 15 players—Centennial showed grit, determination, and teamwork against an opponent that fielded twice as many athletes. The Eagles not only scored consistently but also kept Poolesville out of the end zone, a testament to their relentless defense. Quarterback Brian DiCristofaro set the tone for the offense, connecting with Jack Yeager for a touchdown pass. Walik Langley delivered a standout performance, leading the team in yards and adding two touchdowns of his own—one on the ground and another with a thrilling kick return that brought the Centennial sidelines and fans to their feet. “This is a moment our players, coaches, and community will never forget,” said Coach Hank Okoro, Centennial’s JV head coach. “Our team has faced challenges with numbers, but these athletes have heart, and tonight they proved what determination and teamwork can accomplish.” The win not only breaks a long-standing drought but also symbolizes a resurgence for Centennial football. With pride and momentum on their side, the Eagles hope to continue soaring higher as the season progresses. The Poolesville Falcons hadn’t won a state title before the start of 2022. It has now won four straight, with this past season ever expanding its dominant run. Across both girls and boys teams this past season, two won their singles state titles, while the boys won their doubles title. Senior Andy Wu defeated Hereford 6-1, 6-3, while Ruhika Bhat also defeated Hereford 6-1, 6-0. In the Boys Doubles, William Chen and Akshaj Mareddy beat Glenelg 6-2, 6-1. For Andy Wu, this is his third straight singles title, while Bhat won her second career singles. The teams were overseen by coach Gilbert Cooper (boys) and Andy Johnson (girls). Johnson has been with the program for all four state championships, while Cooper has been with the team for two. “These past four years have embodied the collective efforts of our strong coaching staff and student-athletes who have given countless hours of preparation, strategy, and a vision of what they wanted to accomplish,” said athletic director Regina Grubb. Awards were announced for this past season by the Washington Post with Wu receiving All-Met first team honors and Bhat winning Player of the Year. The senior had a dominant season with an undefeated record of 20-0 and didn’t yield more than one game in any set played this season. On his way to his third state title, Wu didn’t drop a single set, dominating his opponents all season and tournament long. It has been quite a ride these past four seasons, especially for the seniors. Combined, Andy Wu and Ruhika Bhat won five singles titles across their high school careers. They will surely be missed, but given the recent success of the program, the interest will continue to grow potentially leading to more top players; and with William Chen returning, Poolesville should continue to dominate.
Yesterday afternoon, your Magruder Colonels took down the Poolesville Falcons with a dominating score of 12-1!! The Colonels showed no mercy as they absolutely dominated the game from start to finish. This is Magruder’s second time beating Poolesville this season, as they also beat them at home last Thursday. This win marks the Colonels’ 5th win of the regular season, with surely many more to come if they’re putting up performances like this! Be sure to come out and watch their upcoming regional tournament tomorrow as they take on Montgomery Blair High School @ 10:00 AM, and Seneca Valley @ 4:00 PM. Both games are at Magruder High School! On Monday, September 23rd, the Rockville High School Girls Varsity soccer team defeated the Springbrook High School Girls Varsity by 2-1. Rockville High School started strong and pushed its team deep within the Poolesville territory as a powerful show of force. With Saniyah Belliel’s control of the ball, she was first to score tonight and kept their defense against Poolesville for the rest of the first half of the game. As the second half starts, Rockville is back at it again with their strong push towards Poolesville, and Darmaris Cabrera scores through Poolsville's defenses. Poolsville wasn't going to play around anymore and they began to play aggressively during the second half and pushed their attack toward the Rockville side as a show of force and they managed to score their first goal of the night with a penalty kick. The second half was filled with close calls on the Rockville side as Poolsville attacked the goal line but their advances were void due to the referee calls and they managed to prevent any more goals until the end of the game and Rockville won with a score of 2-1. The special spotlight for tonight was displayed by Saniyah's aggressive play against Poolesville as she pushed in alone and often had to deal with their two defensive players but she prevailed through their obstacle and scored a goal for Rockville. Come support the Rams in their next game against Blake High School on September 25th
