Last night, Wednesday February 3rd Brunswick Boys Varsity Basketball played against Boonsboro Boys Varsity Basketball. These two teams had seen each other already with Boonsboro coming out on top. Brunswick, who is having an up year was looking to add to the win column and get some revenge. The game started slow with both teams trying to find their groove, but Brunswick capitalized on some break away points and Boonsboro didn't. Brunswick started fast in the second thanks to freshman Jayvon Moody hitting two threes to put Brunswick up ten fast. Aaron Birney also hit clutch shots to give Brunswick a 30-17 lead at halftime. The second half was no different. Brunswick had their foot on the gas the whole game. Aaron Birney came out hot in the third making what seemed like every shot and playing fantastic defense. Junior Mark Yongbi finally started playing aggressive in the second half for Brunswick grabbing a ton of rebounds and scoring down low. Nick Martinis a junior guard for Brunswick finished great around the rim leading Brunswick to a win over Boonsboro with the final score being 62-47 Brady Renn a senior guard for Brunswick has played phenomenal all season and last night was no different. He's not a flashy player but is a guy you want on your team. Renn is unselfish, passionate, has a good attitude, and is the best re-bounder in the county, only standing at 5'10. Last night Renn and Yongbi grabbed at least 25 rebounds between each other with Renn having at least 10, which played a vital role in Brunswick's win. But every player contributed with Mark Yongbi having 12 points, Aaron Birney with 14, Andrew Jones with 6, Brady Renn with 6, Nick Martinis with 14, and Jayvon Moody with 10.

LR pulled out a come-from-behind victory against Brunswick 32-21 after being down 21-18 at the half. LR gave up an opening kickoff touchdown on a fumble and had to claw all the way back.

Today Brunswick High Girls JV Volleyball team played against the Oakdale High School team. Oakdale’s team lead the score towards the beginning given scores being 2 for Brunswick and 5 for Oakdale. Oakdale won first set with a final score 18 home (Brunswick)— 25 guest (Oakdale). The second set started off very similarly with the same lead of 2 home - 5 guest. Then 9 home - 15 guest. Oakdale won the second set with a score of 17 - 25. Loss for the railroaders, however the JV team has played competitively tonight throughout the game giving it their best.

Finishing on the Overall Podium for a major half marathon demands incredible training, discipline, mental and physical toughness - well beyond normal Cross Country. A HS athlete couldn't be expected to have the right combination of skill sets needed to do that. Right? So kudos to Brunswick HS, and junior Asher Adelman (pictured) who finished **3rd Overall**, plus (I'm guessing his friend) junior Jonah Miller who finished 14th Overall and 2nd in his age group, and (I'm guessing his brother) freshman Griffen Adelman who finished 19th Overall and 1st in his age group, out of 600+ other runners aged 14-80 going up and down the hills of Fulton and River Hill MD, in today's 17th annual UMMS Maryland Half Marathon. These Brunswick Boys dominated, with an exclamation point!

Lexy Partyka a senior athlete at Brunswick High School has been involved in track and field for 4 years with outstanding efforts and accomplishments being a part of the sports team. She has had impressive achievements along the four years, notably she secured 3rd place nationally and 1st place in statewide competitions. Lexy plans to pursue architecture at the University of Texas. Her advice to underclassmen is to challenge themselves as athletes and prioritize academics as students. Beyond track and field, Lexy also participates in cross country as well as adventure racing.

Kate Virgilio, a talented freshman wrestler at Brunswick High School, claimed the state championship title in her weight class this year. Like many thriving athletes she started her journey in sports at a young age. When asked what motivated her to take up wrestling she says, “Back then I was motivated by my parents and family praising me and keeping me going to practice, now it’s much different. I’m mostly motivated by the want to get better and expand my skill, as well as external influences like teammates and family.” Initially being encouraged by her mom to take up wrestling during the winter to stay active, soon developed into a passion for the sport, allowing herself to improve and pushing herself to new heights in competition. While Kate acknowledges that winning the state championship title is an incredible achievement, “winning it was something special” as she puts it, she also treasures the moments of wins showcasing her growth in the sport throughout the season. Contributing points to her team by winning home matches, winning counties, and winning regionals are all as important and as rewarding to her. Kate credits Coach Kyle and Coach Joey for being a huge influence through the season. They were the ones who had prepared her the week before states through drills and rigorous practice. Kate states, “and to mentally prepare they have lots of pep talk.” Hours before some matches, they also analyzed a film of the opponent player to strategize ahead and plan moves before stepping onto the mat. The coaches were very supportive and provided her with the essentials in order to do well in competition. Given a recent loss to her finals opponent before the state championships, she says, “the pressure in that arena is something I’ve never felt before . . . the pressure from that last encounter was heavy, but so was my determination to get back and prove myself.” Although the pressure lived, Kate propelled through proving that with hard work, perseverance and the mindset of determination, something that seems difficult is truly within your reach and achievable. Winning states felt “surreal to win in your freshman year” and at the same time boosted Kate’s confidence by making her feel more self-assured in her skills. She shares her future goals to reach bigger achievements such as participating in nationwide events and overall winning more competitions, along with the current goal being to go back to states and winning again the following year. “Just improving and becoming a better wrestler is a major goal, I know I have a lot I can improve on and I’m ready to work on that.” she shares. “You won't win every match, you’re going to lose, that’s inevitable, but don’t let that determine your attitude nor your skill, you have to have the grit to get better and work hard.” Kate provides invaluable advice for wrestlers from her experience in the sport for 9 years. Kate demonstrates her passion and versatility in sports overall by engaging in sports beyond wrestling such as flag football, cross country, and track and field. Her efforts are truly remarkable showcasing the rewards of hard work and dedication. On an ending note, this notable milestone of state victory is a testament to the unwavering determination and the unrelenting passion that Kate Virgilio exhibits in wrestling, it is something to take notice of and be proud of.

Brunswick Boys JV Baseball played Clear Spring Boys JV Baseball 4/24/25. Brunswick and Clear Spring both with winning records and both were beating the competition in dominating fashion. Brunswick held off Clear Spring in the top of the first with Berrett Ellison starting on the mound for Brunswick. The scoring started after Owen Nugent walked, Dillon Murphy got hit by a pitch, and Brandon Webber bunted to move the runners over while also reaching first base. Mason Barry was up to bat and walked to score the first run of the game for Brunswick. Bases were loading for Max Foltz who went down 0-2 early in the at bat, but hit a sacrifice fly to score Dillon Murphy to bring the lead to two for Brunswick. Brandon Webber scored on another sacrifice fly and Jack Wilt reached base on a walk. Runners were at first and second with two outs with Carter Metz at the plate. Carter swings and drives a pitch to deep left field and it falls in the gap allowing Barry and Wilt to score and Metz gets to third with a triple. That would be the end of the first with Brunswick up 5-0. Berret Ellison pitched two shutout innings and Kaleb Thomas for Clear Spring settled in and didn't let up another run for Clear Spring. The Blazers got to Ellison in the top of the third where Ellison gave up one earned and one unearned run on three hits. Riley Mowen drove in two more runs for Clear Spring to bring the lead within one. The game came down to the last out but Clear Spring made an illegal sub causing the player to be out and for the game to be over. Brunswick held on to win 5-4 over the Clear Spring Blazers.

On April 24th Brunswick played against Middletown. For Girls Varsity there was a 5-0 win for Brunswick involving long matches. Boys Varsity won 4-1 matches against Middletown. Aiden McDonald had a big win in first Singles. This match was an overall win for the Brunswick team.

Wednesday April 23rd was Senior Night for the Brunswick Tennis team. 2025 seniors are Matthew Allgaier, Evan Mullen, Simone Acquah, Kylie Shawver, and Demitrius Farley. The match was between Brunswick and Smithsburg with a win for Brunswick. Player Highlights: Lena Butler and Addison Willis both played Singles in Girls Varsity. Coach Zumbach says, "So proud of Addison and Lena in how they handled themselves once again on the court through 2 hour singles matches yesterday and today. They never quit and are living examples of As Long As it Takes, win or lose."

Brief Summary: Brunswick's Girls Varsity tennis team secured a 3-2 win in a closely contested match. All three doubles players won the matches strongly. In singles, there were two losses. Highlights: "Addison Willis [who played a singles match] went into a 3rd set tie break but lost 10 points to 7, but fought hard for 90 min." says the Coach.

Varsity baseball beats Brunswick in a tough matchup. The Lions built up a 4 run lead in the second inning and then held the Railroaders off for a 7-6 victory. Colton Amoriell went 2/4, 2 3B’s, 2 RBI’s, 2 Runs Scored Jackson Carr 3/4, 1 RBI, 1 Run Scored Max Birth 2/3 Parker Newton GW 2 RBI Single Joe Davio took the hill for the Lions and had 4.1 IP, 2 ER Ian Gensits closed out the game with 2.2 IP, 0 runs the Lions play Catoctin tomorrow 4/23 at Walkersville

Walkersville delivered a strong performance at home, securing a win over the visiting Brunswick Railroaders. The Lions’ offense was firing on all cylinders, led by Claire McMurry, who tallied three goals and two assists. Ryleigh Batt also notched a hat trick and added one assist to power the attack. Noelle Harris contributed two goals, while Emily Coleman, Madelyn Kittle, Mia Marquart, and Mia Ogg each added one goal to round out a well-balanced scoring effort. Abigail Gover added an assist to the mix, helping fuel Walkersville’s offense throughout the game. On the defensive end, goalie Ethel Wright stood tall with eight key saves, helping to preserve the Lions’ lead and secure the victory.

Brunswick played against Middletown. The Girls Varsity was recorded to be a solid win of 5 - Home and 0 - Guest. The scores for the Girls Varsity match go as follows: First singles: 7-5 and 6-2. Second singles: 6-0 and 6-1. First doubles: 6-0 and 6-1. Second doubles: 6-0 and 6-2. Third doubles: 6-1 and 6-3. Player Highlight: Janelle Razunguzwa won her first varsity match playing third doubles with Kaitlyn Heck.

The boys traveled down to Brunswick today and were able to pull out a 4-1 victory with the only loss happening at 2nd doubles. The 2nd doubles team of Henry Van Orden and Landon Jaeger played a tough match but lost 4-6 3-6. The victories came at 1st singles, 2nd singles, 1st doubles and 3rd doubles. At 1st singles, Sid Parandapalli won his match 6-3 6-3. At 2nd singles, Evan Boledovic won 6-0 6-0. At 1st doubles, the team of Adi Gujalwar and Lucas Munro won 7-6(4) 6-3. The 2024 - 2025 Brunswick high school swim team has worked very hard this season. The girls swim team was very strong, performing exceptionally well thanks to the team's hard work and dedication to practice. The boys team is also solid however, "The biggest weakness with the boys team is that we don't have enough of them. Swimming is a numbers game and when we only have 7 swimmers and other teams have 15, the other team will win based on the numbers." says Coach Pfaltzgraff. The team's practice schedule includes 3-4 practices a week that last an hour and 15 minutes. Coaches Hubble and Poole focus on building endurance, technique, and speed for the team. The team also incorporates games and other activities into their practices which keeps things engaging. Regional High point: Men's high point was Elijah Price ranked the highest with Lucas Ku, Alexander Marsh-Brandes, and Manfred Konter following. For the Women's high point in the regional meet there was Claire Price, Jennifer Porter, Delaney Price, Allison George, and Ava Bonanno. State High point: The state championship high point ranking for Brunswick Men's Team was: Manfred Konter, Lucas Ku, and Alexander Marsh-Brandes. The state championship high point ranking for the Brunswick Women's Team was: Emma Palmer, Jennifer Porter, Delaney Price, Claire Price and Lily Palmer.

Brunswick boys varsity played Catoctin boys varsity basketball last Friday in the regional quarter-finals. These two teams had met twice earlier in the season where Brunswick had come out on top both times. But this is the playoffs, and anything can happen. Brunswick was feeling confident though as they have beaten Catoctin twice. Larry Brown, who is Brunswick head coach had said that Brunswick was going to compete with whoever, and whenever, but they needed to sharpen up their offense. "We're going to work on some of our weaknesses on the offensive side of the ball. We need to find a way to shoot the ball more in a more consistent way(Brown)." The first quarter started and Catoctin took an early lead and went up 8-0 quick. Brunswick fought though scoring 10 unanswered points with Jacob Genos starting out hot for Brunswick scoring four of those 10. Aaron Birney also was hot hitting a three in the first. Brunswick played good defense while dominating down low to take the lead 17-12 at the end of the first. Aaron Birney started off the second quarter hot hitting another three, while the combo of Mark Cooke and Andrew Jones down low was too much for Catoctin. All night long Andrew was getting rebounds, blocking, and scoring for Brunswick, which was nice to see because Andrew is a junior and will be back playing at Brunswick next year. Catoctin battled but Brunswick couldn't seem to miss, and hit from everywhere on the court. This is where Brunswick took over and never looked back. The score at halftime was 36-19, Brunswick. In the third Aaron Birney took over and hit almost every shot he took, he had 14 to end the third but hit two more threes to end the night with 20. Almost everyone scored for Brunswick, it was a dominating win and was only really close in the first quarter. Aaron Birney led the team in scoring with 20, points also came from Jackson Dudley, Jacob Genos, Andrew Jones, Kalehil seals, Brady Renn, Eli Miller, Mark Cooke, Nick Martinez, Mark Yongbi, and Jason Kitterage. The final score was Brunswick 76-Catoctin 48.
