With the game cutting close throughout, multiple SFA players rose to the moment and made winning plays on both ends of the floor. Anthony Smith was a steady two-way presence, finishing with 14 points, 1 assist, 3 steals, and 3 rebounds, consistently applying pressure defensively while delivering timely buckets. Chance “03” McCoy controlled the tempo, posting 11 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals, showcasing his ability to impact the game as a floor general and defensive disruptor With important steals and plays. Leading the way, Carter Fisk put together a standout performance with 18 points, 2 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals, punctuated by two momentum-shifting dunks in key moments that energized his team and silenced the home crowd. MIAA’s football season is already underway, with Archbishop Spalding leading A Conference and John Carroll at the top of B Conference. The Cavaliers, MIAA A Conference’s reigning champ from last season, are rematching against McDonogh on Friday. The Eagles will try to redeem themselves after their championship loss against Spalding 40-7. Spalding has a perfect 3-0 record this season. In B Conference, John Carroll leads with a 2-1 record, but Severn is close behind with a 2-0 record. Spalding will host McDonogh this Friday at 7 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s MIAA A Conference championship when the Cavaliers defeated the Eagles 40-7. Concordia Prep will also have the opportunity to defend their title when they play St. Mary’s on Saturday. Both of these B Conference powers moved up to A Conference for the 2024-2025 season. The Saints currently stand at the bottom of the conference with a 0-2 record. This matchup, consisting of the two teams that moved up conferences for this season, is a chance for both teams to prove themselves worthy of being in the top conference.
Rather than crumble under the weight of immense pressure and expectations, the McDonogh boys’ lacrosse team rose to the occasion. The Eagles overcame setbacks and pulled through a series of close calls to win their third straight MIAA A Conference championship, joining Calvert Hall (2017-2019) as the only teams to pull off that feat. It was a testament to McDonogh’s talent, resilience and togetherness. Every time the Eagles (15-3) looked vulnerable — back-to-back losses to Calvert Hall and Archbishop Spalding in mid-April — or the end of the run appeared imminent — a two-goal deficit in the final minute of the MIAA quarterfinals against Loyola — this tight-knit group found a way to get the job done. “We just wanted it more than anyone, I think,” said senior attackman Luke Miller, a Notre Dame recruit. The 14-12 victory in the championship game on May 17 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis came against top-seeded Boys’ Latin, a team McDonogh had already beaten in April. A rematch between the two best teams in the A conference led to the same goal difference as their previous encounter. McDonogh held off a late surge by Boys Latin to hang on to a 14-12 championship victory. The game was back-and-forth in the first half with the game 6-6 heading into the final two minutes of the first half. Two goals in the final minute gave the Eagles needed momentum heading into halftime, and that carried over into the second half. Two goals by forward Hunter Metz helped blow open the game to 13- 8 in the third quarter, and late goals in the final minutes of the fourth by Boys Latin were not enough to overcome the deficit. A fitting game to capture the essence of a fantastic MIAA Lacrosse season!

Two games could have major implications for seeding and matchups in the playoffs. Mcdonogh traveled to Boys Latin their first loss of the season with a 12 -10 victory. The Eagles stifled Boys Latin’s attack allowing only 3 goals in the first half. The Lakers woke up in the second half, getting the game to 11-10 with 5 minutes left. Mcdonogh was able to hold them off and add an extra goal with 35 seconds left. In a low scoring game Calvert Hall came away with a 7-6 win in overtime, with Calvert Hall tying the game 6-6 with 2 minutes remaining in the 4th.
