Middletown’s postseason came to an abrupt end after the program reported an eligibility issue involving a player from last week’s 51–7 victory over Liberty. The self-reported violation forces a forfeiture, clearing the way for Liberty to advance as the No. 5 seed and meet Hereford in the next round.

The Walkersvile High School Boys Soccer Team were battling in a back and forth first half. Both teams looked to get the ball forward and attack into the final third. Despite defending well for much of the half, the Lions found themselves down 1-0 at halftime. Walkersville came out with energy in the second half, but an unfortunate set piece found the back of the net for Liberty, to take a 2-0 lead. The Lions kept pressing and found a spark late in the game. The momentum seemed to turn when Tyler Cincotta got on to a ball just outside the box and was taken down, earning a dangerous free kick for Walkersville. Nathan Ramsay stepped up to the ball and placed a beautifully struck ball past the keeper to put the Lions on the board. After the goal, Walkersville continued to press and created several chances going forward in the final 15 minutes of play. Cash Moots and Eli Glickman both got their heads onto dangerous crosses but were unable to find the back of the net. Despite the late surge, the Lions couldn’t find the game tying goal and ultimately fell 2-1 to Liberty. Kollin Purgason was strong in net for the Lions, finishing with 9 saves in the game. Walkersville will be back in action Thursday night when they take on Linganore High School. Liberty High School’s 2023 season ended two games away from gold, with a 2-1 upset loss to Havre de Grace in the state quarter-final. Throughout the offseason before last fall began, head coach Danielle Prietz explained that her team “was locked in… players played summer league, they did OTA’s, captain’s practices, and hit the weight room”. Simultaneously, the Lions’ coaching staff studied film, looking into trends from the previous season, and determining their game plan to lead their team to a successful 2024 campaign. The team’s first test came in a late August scrimmage against Linganore. Going into the game, the Lions were feeling confident with their months of preparation over the offseason. Despite this, the team fell to the Lancers 2-1. Coach Prietz was not concerned about the early loss, citing that the team “took it as a teaching moment. We looked at what went wrong… and made sure that we moved on.” Following the game against Linganore, the Lions quickly picked up. In the team’s first five games, the offense scored a combined 26 goals while the defense did not allow a single one. Within those five games, Liberty scored eight goals against both Catoctin in the first game and Frederick in the fifth. Liberty’s dominance continued for several more games, but the team hit their first small skid of the season in back-to-back games against South Carroll and Century, where the Lions tied 1-1 against the Cavaliers, then took their first loss of the season, when the Knights took them down 1-0. Coach Prietz understood that both those games were against great programs, adding on that the two served as a “wake up call… against South Carroll, we had chances but we didn’t finish… against Century, it felt like the same thing.” In practice, Liberty worked on simplifying the game, working mostly on easy drills. This plan proved to work, as they took down Boonsboro to finish out the regular season. The Lions took down Carver A&T 5-0, setting them up for a regional final rematch against South Carroll. Differently from the regular season match, Coach Prietz said that her team only made minor adjustments to their game plan, explaining that going into the match, they “had to play to our strengths and dictate the pace of the game.” Liberty successfully took down the Cavaliers 2-1, advancing them to the state playoffs as the the three-seed. Liberty took down their first two opponents, Perryville and Northern Garrett, by a combined 11-1, setting them up to play the fourth-seeded Mardela Warriors. With no shortage of momentum the Lions put their focus on their defense, because of Mardela’s “serious attacking threats… if we weren’t disciplined, it could hurt us quickly,” said Coach Prietz. In the end, Liberty triumphed over the Warriors, bringing home the state championship for the first time in thirty years with a 3-0 final. While Coach Prietz was obviously thrilled for herself and every athlete, she also highlighted “every player who ever wore the jersey before us. The alumni, former coaches, the families, the community; they have all wanted this for us.” Specifically though, Coach Prietz thanked her captains, Hannah DeVincent, Kourtney Goff, Kate Darminio, Madison Smith, and Reese Edwards for their contributions both on and off the field. Now, the reigning state champions are gearing up for their 2025 campaign. Just days away from tryouts beginning, every returning member has been working throughout the offseason in the same ways as before the 2024 campaign. Liberty is most looking forward to their “Battle of Route 26” games against both South Carroll and Century this coming season.

On Wednesday, the two-seeded Pikesville Panthers traveled to Carroll County to take on the top 1A team in Maryland, the Liberty Lions. In the regional semifinals, Liberty defeated the South Carroll Cavaliers 7-3 while the Panthers took down the Western Tech Wolverines 12-4. In the top of the first inning, Michael Hagan opened the offense for Pikesville with an infield single, while Will Holaday and Richie Carlton both singled in the bottom of the second. Despite three hits, no runs were scored. Braeden Chubb was Liberty's first baserunner of the game as he reached on an error after hitting a fly ball to right field with one out. In the top of the third, Ian Davis and Kairee Williams singled to lead off the inning, With one out, Spencer Evans smacked a line drive into left field to drive in the first run of the game. In the top of the forth, with runners on first and second, Max Levin layed down a bunt. Liberty's Carter Shanks tried getting Will Holaday at third, but the ball went out of play and the second run scored for Pikesville. With two outs, Kairee Williams grounded into a fielders choice to drive another run in. After an intentional walk to Michael Hagan, Spencer Evans was walked on five pitches and Isaac Garonzik hit a hard single to make the score 5-0 after four innings. In the top of the sixth, Pikesville loaded the bases with no outs, but only got one run in the inning, coming as Will Holaday was hit by his second pitch of the day. Despite giving up one single and two walks with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Liberty was unable to score a run, and Pikesville took down the 15-1 Liberty Lions with a 6-0 final score. Isaac Garonzik went the complete game, throwing seven innings in 92 pitches. The senior allowed zero runs, two hits, and two walks while striking out four. For the Lions, Carter Shanks took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing five earned runs on seven hits and two walks. While this is the end of the road for the Lions, the Panthers, now the seven seed in the state tournament, will be taking on the Patterson Mill Huskies at Harford Community College. The game will be taking place on May 16 with first pitch scheduled for 7pm.
