Linganore pulled off a 4–3 double-overtime victory over Westminster to capture the Class 3A Field Hockey State Championship, what a game! Congrats, ladies! 🏆❤️
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDJE8w4HQYs 🏈🏈 MARYLAND GIRLS FLAG 2A-1A CHAMPIONSHIP 🆚 #3 Linganore vs #1 Calvert 📍Baltimore, Maryland (M&T Bank Stadium) The view was absolutely gorgeous as we headed down the steps towards the media room to set up for this fairly new championship in a new sport trying to be introduced across the state of Maryland. Ninety high school girls flag football teams have fought to where only two will be crowned victor. This was the first match for the Class 2A-1A champion. The scene was set for an exciting battle between the #3 seeded Linganore Lancers and the #1 seed, Calvert Cavaliers. Both teams repping for their school, county, and ultimately the state of Maryland. GAME RECAP The Cavaliers won the coin toss and elected to start first in the second half. So the Lancers began their drive quickly making good progress down the field. Running to the other end of the sideline, I caught the tail end of number 5 Makenna Roberts’ cooking her way in to the end zone for Linganore’s first TD. From this point, I could see this was going to be an electrifying game. No worries, because it looked as if Calvert was ready to make their move. The Cavaliers began their drive with a few little neat tricks but were unable to move the sticks, so they punted back to an eager Linganore. Lancers continued progressing, and with the help of a PI call, were back adding another 7 points to the score. Defensively too, Linganore was getting the flags pulled quickly and made it difficult for the Cavaliers to advanced. I got the sense Calvert was a bit shocked by their opponent’s play. Not playing conservative though, Calvert took the risk and went for it on 4th and long. Pass was incomplete and put the Lancers in great field position. It was long after Makenna scored again. Let me say this, being down by three scores did not slow the Cavaliers fight for the game. Good coaching and determination kept them right in it. They were able to keep the Lancers from adding an extra point. At this time, got to see #7 Amani Welch make some pretty smooth moves as she led her team down the field. Amani scored the first points weaving her way away from Lancers defenders. Cavaliers kept the momentum going, bringing Linganore to punt off the pursuing drive. Things were really looking upwards. Nearing the 1st half conclusion, Lancers had an opportunity to add to their lead, but it was cut short by the Cavaliers stopping the last pass of the half. Second half, Calvert advanced at the beginning. The drive fell short and returned to the control of the Lancers. The Lancers ended back in the end zone, even after having a penalty which moved them a distance back. The rest of the half consisted of Linganore protecting their lead as they advanced to become the 2025 2A-1A Maryland Girls Flag Football Champions. It was their first one and now memories have been loaded encouraging future successes. TO THE CAVALIERS, you ladies are AWESOME. You played a great game. You never gave up and fought up to the very end. KEEP THE GRIND ON in the off season. Looking forward to your future success!!! TO THE THE LANCERS, CONGRATULATIONS on your championship victory. Based in western Frederick County, Linganore High School has always been home to some of the state’s top sports programs. Though they are known for their powerhouse football program and playoff-bound basketball teams, the Lancers’ most consistently dominant program is one that most do not expect – Cheerleading. Head coach Amy Rumburg and assistant coach Jean Davis have been running the program together since 2017. “I have been coaching here since 2016, starting as the JV coach, then taking over the program in 2017,” Coach Amy explained. In the fall of 2017, Linganore took home Maryland’s top spot in the 3A/4A classification. Since then, their dominance has not faltered. For nine consecutive seasons, dating back to the winter of 2020, excluding the fall of 2020 and the winter of 2021 when no teams competed due to COVID-19, Linganore has won every regional competition. Coach Jean credits the continued success to the “consistency that starts from the bottom up. We try to stay very consistent from youth to JV to varsity, all the way through.” Last fall, Linganore had fourteen athletes competing in the state championship competition, where they won first place, but in the Winter of 2025, the team had to compete with just nine cheerleaders on the mat. Coach Amy explained that the drop was because they “don’t allow all-star and high school competitions in the winter,” meaning that cheerleaders cannot compete for their private club and the school simultaneously. While the adjustment to a smaller team took time, rising senior Anelise Herdman believes that “it ended up being a positive experience because [the team] needed to learn how to make changes.” While the team placed second in the state, Anelise was still proud of the team’s perseverance through the difficulty. Going into this fall’s season, the team is unsure of the classification where they’ll compete, but Coach Amy explained that the entire team is beginning the season with the mindset that “we are competing against everyone in the state of Maryland.” The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Cheerleading Committee, MPSSCC, will not be assigning classifications until it is determined which teams will be competing. Reflecting on her last decade at Linganore, Coach Jean described her love of the entire community, highlighting the energy and the sense of togetherness in every event. Rising senior Dani Beall is also thankful for the moments off the mat. “The bus rides to games, competitions, pep rallies, and the stuff we do in the community that strengthens our team bonds,” she explained. In the midst of hosting Linganore’s K-8 cheerleading summer camp, Dani wants to remind all aspiring cheerleaders that “there’s going to be hard days, there’s going to be hard practices, and there’s going to be losses, but just keep pushing because it is worth it.” Additionally, Anelise encourages everyone not to give up on their goals if it is difficult, but rather to continue to work on them, no matter how hard it is. After five years of regional dominance, Linganore’s cheerleaders are doing more than defending a reputation; they’re building a legacy. As Dani and Anelise prepare for their final seasons as Lancers, they will take home the trophies, but they will never forget the lessons in resilience, leadership, and teamwork. Coaches Amy and Jean have no intention of slowing down, but they cannot wait to get back to Harford Community College and reclaim their crown. Truly appreciate the AD and staff of Linganore HS for allowing us to come film highlights of this great rivalry match between state champs, Urbana Hawks & the Linganore Lancers. There is truly some star athletics happening in Frederick County. Arriving a bit late because I thought game started later, dived right in to the action. Game was fast paced. Urbana was up 5-1 when I came, and they continued to add goals over a very good Lancers team (undefeated). Lancers fought to make scores and had a really excellent one by winning a face off. However, Urbana kept a lead for the rest of the game. BIG SHOUTS to the HAWKS & the LANCERS. May you both continue to have success!!!!
