The No. 13 Gaffney Indians upset the No. 9 Byrnes Rebels in a rivalry game at home 20-17. In this major rivalry game, the Indians started the action by recovering their own onside kick. That recovery set up senior quarterback Corey Taylor to check down to senior running back Amire White for a 37-yard touchdown, putting Gaffney ahead 6-0 early. In the second quarter, that lead was further extended on a short rushing touchdown from Kendaris Bailey, followed by a two-point conversion on a Corey Taylor keeper. With under a minute to go in the half, Byrnes had the ball on the Gaffney seven-yard line, but couldn’t cash in, and the game went to halftime with the Indians ahead 14-0. The third quarter started with Taylor scoring on the ground, but a failed two-point conversion attempt kept the score at 20-0. Byrnes’ offense got going soon after. They started their scoring with a mid-range field goal from senior Ashton Cathcart. That was followed by their first touchdown of the game, a 60+ yard pick six from junior linebacker Mason Stevens. The Rebels continued their comeback attempt in the fourth quarter as, with 10 minutes left, quarterback Gideon Merhib connected with senior Nicqlous Watson over the middle for a 23-yard touchdown. Byrnes falls to 3-2 with the loss, something they’ll look to avenge on the road next week against Hillcrest.
