The No. 16 Ridge View Blazers upset the undefeated No. 3 Rock Hill Bearcats 20-10 at home in week six. Rock Hill senior James Heckard kicked off the scoring early in the game, making a 25-yard field goal in the first five minutes. Ridge View quickly responded as, three minutes later, sophomore Tobey Brooks tied it with a 32-yard field goal of his own. The second quarter started slow, but Ridge View’s offense picked up steam with 5:25 on the clock. Isiaiah Small took a direct snap to the right and converted a fourth and one in Bearcat territory. Later in the quarter, senior quarterback Derek Howard III gave the Blazers the lead on a post corner to a wide open Khristian Jackson, putting Ridge View ahead 10-3 at halftime. Ridge View grew their lead in the third on a 29-yard field goal from Brooks. Rock Hill tried to respond with a 32-yard attempt from Heckard, but the kick sailed wide right and the score held at 13-3. Early in the fourth, a string of penalties forced the Blazers to punt on fourth and goal at the Ridge View 35. Despite keeping Ridge View off the board then, Bearcat quarterback Colby Phelps fumbled at the Blazers’ 42. The ball was scooped up by Cameryn Crayton who ran it back 50 yards for the defensive score. Senior Kaiden Watkins scored a three-yard rushing touchdown for Rock Hill later in the fourth, but it was not enough as the Blazers handed Rock Hill their first loss of the season, winning 20-10. Ridge View rises to 2-2 on the season and they’ll look to get above .500 for the first time on the road against White Knoll next week. Meanwhile Rock Hill, now 4-1, will work to bounce back next week at Spartanburg.
