The No. 7 Dorman Cavaliers remain undefeated through six weeks, defeating the No. 22 Sumter Gamecocks 48-35. Sumter got out of the gate hot, driving downfield in their first drive setting up junior Reggie Shannon to punch in the first touchdown on a six-yard run. Just a few minutes later, Dorman senior Nick Means answered on a 22-yard rushing touchdown with 7:16 left in the first. Soon after, Dorman’s defense came through. Senior safety Maleek Hyers blocked a Gamecock punt that was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by senior Tylan Edwards. Before the end of the quarter, Sumter quarterback Franklin Richardson equalized, scoring two-yard rushing touchdown to knot the game at 14 after one. Early in the second, the Cavaliers retook the lead on a seven-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Cooper Patterson. That early score proved to be the only touchdown in the quarter as the Cavaliers and Gamecocks combined for 35 first-half points. Dorman took the first two-score lead of the game on a 38-yard rushing touchdown, but Shannon responded with a 17-yard touchdown of his own to cut the Cavs’ lead in half by the end of the third. Franklin Richardson opened the fourth with an equalizing 18-yard rushing touchdown, but that was immediately followed by the game’s longest score, coming on a 77-yard run from Nick Means to put Dorman back ahead. Later in the quarter, the Cavaliers scored again on the ground, followed by a 32-yard passing touchdown to Dai’Shion Watkins-Hynes. The Gamecocks went on to score once more, coming on a six-yard rushing touchdown from Jermaine Cabbagestalk, but it would not be enough as the Cavaliers remain undefeated, beating Sumter 48-35. Sumter’s defense has work to do after averaging over 50 points against per play. They’ll host Blythewood to kick off their regional schedule. Meanwhile Dorman will look to stay hot in another ranked road game at Fort Mill.
