Last night, Wednesday February 3rd Brunswick Boys Varsity Basketball played against Boonsboro Boys Varsity Basketball. These two teams had seen each other already with Boonsboro coming out on top. Brunswick, who is having an up year was looking to add to the win column and get some revenge. The game started slow with both teams trying to find their groove, but Brunswick capitalized on some break away points and Boonsboro didn't. Brunswick started fast in the second thanks to freshman Jayvon Moody hitting two threes to put Brunswick up ten fast. Aaron Birney also hit clutch shots to give Brunswick a 30-17 lead at halftime. The second half was no different. Brunswick had their foot on the gas the whole game. Aaron Birney came out hot in the third making what seemed like every shot and playing fantastic defense. Junior Mark Yongbi finally started playing aggressive in the second half for Brunswick grabbing a ton of rebounds and scoring down low. Nick Martinis a junior guard for Brunswick finished great around the rim leading Brunswick to a win over Boonsboro with the final score being 62-47 Brady Renn a senior guard for Brunswick has played phenomenal all season and last night was no different. He's not a flashy player but is a guy you want on your team. Renn is unselfish, passionate, has a good attitude, and is the best re-bounder in the county, only standing at 5'10. Last night Renn and Yongbi grabbed at least 25 rebounds between each other with Renn having at least 10, which played a vital role in Brunswick's win. But every player contributed with Mark Yongbi having 12 points, Aaron Birney with 14, Andrew Jones with 6, Brady Renn with 6, Nick Martinis with 14, and Jayvon Moody with 10.

Brunswick boys varsity played Catoctin boys varsity basketball last Friday in the regional quarter-finals. These two teams had met twice earlier in the season where Brunswick had come out on top both times. But this is the playoffs, and anything can happen. Brunswick was feeling confident though as they have beaten Catoctin twice. Larry Brown, who is Brunswick head coach had said that Brunswick was going to compete with whoever, and whenever, but they needed to sharpen up their offense. "We're going to work on some of our weaknesses on the offensive side of the ball. We need to find a way to shoot the ball more in a more consistent way(Brown)." The first quarter started and Catoctin took an early lead and went up 8-0 quick. Brunswick fought though scoring 10 unanswered points with Jacob Genos starting out hot for Brunswick scoring four of those 10. Aaron Birney also was hot hitting a three in the first. Brunswick played good defense while dominating down low to take the lead 17-12 at the end of the first. Aaron Birney started off the second quarter hot hitting another three, while the combo of Mark Cooke and Andrew Jones down low was too much for Catoctin. All night long Andrew was getting rebounds, blocking, and scoring for Brunswick, which was nice to see because Andrew is a junior and will be back playing at Brunswick next year. Catoctin battled but Brunswick couldn't seem to miss, and hit from everywhere on the court. This is where Brunswick took over and never looked back. The score at halftime was 36-19, Brunswick. In the third Aaron Birney took over and hit almost every shot he took, he had 14 to end the third but hit two more threes to end the night with 20. Almost everyone scored for Brunswick, it was a dominating win and was only really close in the first quarter. Aaron Birney led the team in scoring with 20, points also came from Jackson Dudley, Jacob Genos, Andrew Jones, Kalehil seals, Brady Renn, Eli Miller, Mark Cooke, Nick Martinez, Mark Yongbi, and Jason Kitterage. The final score was Brunswick 76-Catoctin 48.
Brunswick boys varsity won three games last year(not including playoffs ) and this year they have a 10-7 record and will be a high seed in the playoffs this year. Brunswick's fans didn't really have high expectations this year for the team but luckily they were proven wrong. Not only will Brunswick be a higher seed in the playoffs but they can also compete for a state title which has not been done since 1977. Larry Brown who is the head coach for Brunswick boys varsity basketball agreed to a postseason interview after last nights game. The team has improved a lot from last year and when asking Coach Brown why he said this: "I'll start off by saying that the buy in this year was better. Our buy in on defense is what really helped us improve. We have guys who are committed to playing good defense within our concepts and schemes. There is a lot more communication and rotating allowing us to be great defensively." Which is true, Brunswick has played great defensively except for a few games and it has allowed them to win more games. Chemistry also allows for great defense and Coach Brown had this to say about the team chemistry: "The senior leadership is great and everyone gets along allowing for good chemistry. It starts with Jackson Dudley who is a guy with four years of varsity experience, which allows him to recognize what the other team is doing. Then obviously you have Mark and Jacob who play football and are captains for the football team, and basketball team, and those guys really set the tone for the other guys to follow." The fans can tell from the sideline that Coach Brown loves what he does and is very excited to see what they can do in the playoffs. "When you have a good team like this it makes my job more fun. When everybody is buying in, it doesn't matter if you win or lose because the effort that we play with, I feel like we can be in any game. It doesn't matter if we're going down five or ten points, because we have and we've been able to fight back. Some teams will fold when down by ten, and then the ten point lead turns into a 15 point lead and it's even tougher to come back. But these guys are very gritty and they keep fighting." This team is exciting to watch because they do play gritty they compete in almost every game. Brunswick is looking to compete in the playoffs this year and Coach Brown is looking to sharpen up the team before their first game: "We're going to work on some of our weaknesses on the offensive side of the ball. We need to find a way to shoot the ball more in a more consistent way. But really we have to sharpen up everything in our tool box to get ready. Liberty is the number one team in the region and I thought we fought hard. We showed we can compete with anyone. They are three games away so hopefully we can see them again for a rematch." Congratulations to Brunswick boys varsity basketball for the good season and good luck to them in the playoffs.
