In 1994, Baltimore County Public Schools became the first public school system in the United States to implement allied sports on a county-wide scale. Under athletic coordinator Ron Belinko, the county adapted sports, including both bowling and bocce, allowing students with disabilities to participate in athletics. Thirty years later, the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) reports that, as of last month, twenty-four states throughout the country offer state-sponsored championships in different unified sports. Throughout that time, over seven and a half million students have participated in adapted sports, including basketball, volleyball, bocce, softball, and many more. Among all of those programs, one has stood out above them all, and it is located under an hour away from where the sport started. While all ten Frederick County public high schools offer three allied sports, with tennis in the fall, bocce in the winter, and track in the spring, Tuscarora’s bocce program has stood out above all others. This season, the team had substantial expectations, especially after the successes in 2023-2024. Last bocce season, the team participated in four matches against four different opponents from throughout Frederick County. Strong performances in each match propelled the Titans to the county championship while also hosting Special Olympics Maryland’s Interscholastic Unified Sports District 3 championship. The team did take home gold in the county championship, helping in their effort to renew their Special Olympics National Unified Champion School status. Tuscarora High successfully renewed this status, but their accolades did not end there. Head coach Mike O’Brien was awarded the NFHS National Allied Coach of the Year award in recognition of the work that he does, both at the high school and in the community, which provides youth with an opportunity to succeed. Going into the 2024-25 season, the team was looking to defend their county title this year, while also fighting to reach the state championship. Tuscarora’s Sophia Smith explained that official records are not tracked in Allied Bocce, but the team was playing consistently, allowing them to make it back to the county championship. The team, consisting of twenty-one total athletes, not only won the county championship for the second consecutive year, the second time during Coach O’Brien’s tenure that the team accomplished the feat, but one of Tuscarora’s groups qualified for the state championship at Hagerstown Community College. The last two years of bocce at Tuscarora High School have been nothing short of incredible. Between consecutive county championship victories, a state championship participant, all while being led by the former National Allied Coach of the Year, this program will continue to build, and will likely be strong for several years to come.

Roaders played against Tuscarora. Briefly, the scores of the first quarter are 5-Home to 17-Guest. Before halftime the score board showed 17-Home and 29-Guest. Third quarter's scores were 30-Home and 48-Guest. With an already significant lead from the beginning, Tuscarora won the Varsity Basketball game with the final scores of 42-Brunswick to 59-Tuscarora.

Friday on Valentine's 2/14/25, Brunswick played a competitive game against Tuscarora and was a closely contested match. Tuscarora took the lead at the beginning of the game, having quarter one end with a score of 6-Home and 11-Guest. Brunswick followed up with a perfect three pointer in the second quarter. The defense was strong resulting in a score of 21-Home and 17-Guest. The third quarter of the game held a lot of foul shots which made the scores for both the teams close to being even, 33-Home and 32-Guest. Tuscarora upped their game in the last quarter of the game, bringing their scores up from 32 to 50. The Boys Basketball JV ended with a final score of 43 Brunswick and 50 Tuscarora.

Tuscarora erased a six point deficit in the 4th quarter to escape with a 53-49 victory. Walkersville was led by Dylan White 12 points, 4 assists and AK Whitby 12 points and 8 rebounds. Trevor Pfiel added 10 points and James Stier chipped in 9 points and 6 rebounds. Walkersville falls to 1-1 on the season. From Walkersville Head Coach Mike Mathis

Walkersville jumped out to 20-0 lead in first quarter and came away with 45-13 win. Addie Boram had 16 points and 3 assists. Aayana Teasley finished with 14 points and Mia Ogg had 5 points and 9 rebounds. Walkersville won JV game 62-21. Aneessa Ali-Goukoye had 11 points.
