The Westminster High School Boys Lacrosse heads into the new season with a mix of hunger and confidence, determined to turn last year’s disappointment into a driving force. After a postseason run that didn’t go as far as they had hoped, the Owls are focused on starting this season strong and setting a new tone from the opening faceoff. A major advantage for Westminster this year is the number of returning players stepping back into the lineup. With key contributors coming back across the field, the team brings valuable experience and chemistry that should immediately show on game day. The offense returns players who understand how to move the ball efficiently, while the defense benefits from a unit that has already built trust and communication. That continuity gives the Owls a strong foundation as they look to build early-season momentum. Last season’s early exit from the postseason still lingers, but it has become motivation rather than frustration. Throughout the offseason, the team has put in the work—improving conditioning, sharpening skills, and focusing on playing a more disciplined and complete style of lacrosse. There’s a clear sense that this group learned from its shortcomings and is ready to respond in a big way. Leadership will be another key factor in Westminster’s success. With experienced players returning, the team has strong voices both on and off the field to keep everyone focused and accountable. Those leaders know what it takes to compete at a high level and are determined to push the team further than last year. As the season gets underway, Westminster will look to capitalize on its experience and start fast. In a competitive schedule, getting off to a strong start can make all the difference. If the Owls can stay consistent and play with the intensity they’ve shown in preparation, they have the potential to be a serious contender. This season isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about taking the next step. And with a talented, experienced roster and something to prove, Westminster boys lacrosse is ready to make its mark.

On March 18th, Franklin High School put together an impressive scrimmage win over Owings Mills High School, giving an early look at what this group could bring heading into the season. Franklin came out firing, putting up 5 goals in just the first quarter and setting the tone immediately. The offense was clicking, shots were falling, and the energy was high from the start as they took control early. As the scrimmage went on, you could see the rhythm start to build. Players were settling in, making the extra pass, and trusting each other to make plays. It wasn’t about one person taking over, it was clear they were focused on playing as a unit. Cuts were sharper, decisions were quicker, and the overall flow of the offense started to look more polished with each possession. The coaching also stood out, especially with the adjustments being made throughout. Different lineups were rotated in, giving more players valuable minutes instead of relying only on the starters. That kind of approach not only builds depth but helps develop experience across the roster early on. With the team losing key seniors from last season, performances like this matter. These scrimmages are where chemistry gets built and roles start to take shape. Franklin looks like a group that’s learning how to play together, and if they continue to build off efforts like this, it sets them up to come into the season prepared and confident.
With the 2025 boy’s lacrosse season in the books, it’s time now to start looking towards the offseason in Montgomery County. Five teams each won their respective divisions, with one doing so for the first time in its school’s history, while another just continues to dominate. In this article, I will give a brief outlook into the offseason for each division winner, highlighting top players departing/returning, and get an overall feel as to where things stand now and moving forward. I also spoke with the head coaches from each team to get further insight. With that, here is the offseason lookout for Montgomery County Boy’s Lacrosse. First team All-County selection Mark Henry led the Rams to their first regional championship in school history, pacing the team in goals (57) and points (77). Henry also led the team in groundballs, scooping up 72. A few other notable players this past season were Shaun McMahon (team leading 29 assists), Ronan Campbell (61% FO%), and defensemen Ethan Zhu and Dillon Estabrook (36 and 32 forced turnovers, respectively). Each of them made the All-Division team, as well as attackers Mason Willard (63PTS) and Cameron Wong (19G/19A), midfielders Adam Latham (41GB) and Will Bamba (12PTS), defenseman Aarav Kapilashirami (26GB/12FT) and Carson Tusing (15GB/7FT), and goalie Luke Fensterstock (8W/96 SV/.549 SV%). Although Willard and Wong return on the offensive end, it’s the defense that really has head coach David Haines excited. “Our defense is going to be a defense that will be able to match up man for man with every team in our division.” Zhu, Estabrook, Jacob Chin, and Kapilashirami (who they call AK or Aarav) will be the four leaders that will be able to go one-on-one with anyone and “shut them down.” The recent success of the program has also led to an uptick in interest within Rockville, especially at middle school. “We had 16 kids sign up who're interested in playing lacrosse; last year there were two.” The varsity team was also the biggest that they had had and the JV was also bigger compared to previous seasons. “The good problem will be going to the administration and saying we need more equipment. And we've never had to do that before.” Things like that are what make winning your first regional championship in school history so beneficial and so rewarding; because now local kids can see what is possible, and because of that, those kids will want to be a part of that.
Sherwood just continues to dominate. The Warriors won their fourth straight regional title, and finished with a record of 16-2. They did lose in the quarterfinal round of states, but that should not take away from the fact that this team year in and year out produces some of the best lacrosse in Montgomery County. And leading the charge was midfielder Andrew Cavanaugh, whose 53 goals, 26 assists and 79 points earned him a second straight USA Lacrosse All-American honor. He was also named the Montgomery County Player of the Year and was selected to the first team All-County club. “He’s one of our best players to ever come through our system.” said Sherwood head coach Matt Schneider. Cavanaugh will continue his athletic career at Towson University. “Players like him show what our program can do; it can help younger players when they see players like him head off to a D1 program.” Five other players joined him for the All-County team: Chase Althouse (116 GBs -top five in MOCO; 241 FOW), defenseman Tommy Hanrahan (team leading 37 forced turnovers) and Eddie Barnes (13GB/14FT), and attackers Andrew Bergesen (44 assists and 96 points were top five in MOCO) and Jack Heagy (a USA Lacrosse Academic All-American). Goalie Stephen Northern, Carter Al-Hassani, and Vaughn Teeter were named to the All-Division team, along with the above-mentioned players. Cavanaugh, Bergesen, and Heagy depart, but everyone else returns. Having a returning goalie also helps, and Northern will certainly provide the team someone they can rely on. The defense also figures to be a strong suit with Althouse, Hanrahan, and Barnes leading the way; though Schneider plans to have Althouse contribute more offensively than last year (30 goals his freshman year). Schneider will also look towards Daniel Walsh, Teeter and the rest of the returning young players to continue their development. Recent success suggests that the Warriors are in very good hands not only this year, but in the future as well.
The Severna Park boys' lacrosse team has won nine straight lacrosse titles in Maryland Class 4A or 3A for nine consecutive years. Although the winning culture has existed for almost a decade, brotherhood and leadership mean even more. "It means a lot because a lot of these guys we've been playing with for a while," said senior attacker Jack Fish. Fish stated that some players have been playing together since they were five, which helped grow their bond on and off the field. The team would eat at Chick-fil-A after Saturday morning practice during the season. The friendship and familiarity on and off the field, alongside second-year head coach Bob Zichelli, helped propel the team to a 19-1 record. "There's no cliques on our team," senior attacker Timmy Sullivan stated. "We're just one giant group, just all best friends. And it's truly just an amazing experience with all the boys." Zichelli, who finished his second year at Severna Park, has been a mentor for the athletes. Throughout his two years, the team has seen the lacrosse program grow, and Zichelli has put trust in his players. "I think he gives us a lot of freedom to play how we want to play and lead the team how we want to lead the team," said Fish. With the senior class departing and the upcoming seniors taking over, they all believe the program has a bright future ahead of them.

First recorded playoff for MPSSAA LAX is in the books. I normally slice the videos down to about 15-17 minutes. However, this battle was epic and so the YT vid is about 27 minutes long. Both teams came out swinging and Laurel took a good lead in the first half. Near halftime, the Gladiators started to cut down the Spartans lead. The same happened until the fourth quarter and it was Northwood who led by one. Laurel tied the game sending the game in to overtime. Northwood sealed the deal with a goal under 3 minutes left in OT. It was a tough loss and great victory handled with class from BOTH teams. First BIG THANK YOU to LAUREL ATHLETICS, who has always been hospitable to MFV, from the fans, leaders, coaches, and players. SHOUTS to the SPARTANS, keep shining as you have already done. BIG CONGRATS to the GLADIATORS, much success to you in the next round. On May 2, the Titans dominated against the Kennedy Cavaliers with a 27-2 score It was senior night for the Einstein Titans, in celebration of a total of 16 Seniors for their performances and personality they bring for the team. These seniors made sure they left their mark in their last regular season game. The Titans entered the 1st quarter with full aggressiveness, ending up with a total of 13 goals scored in the 1st quarter. #7 Lucien Johnson was seen playing with the weak Kennedy Defense, scoring 6 goals in the 1st and securing back to back hat tricks. Kennedy would score two goals early but the deficit continued to grow going from 4 to 11 in quick minutes. 7 out of the 8 players who scored were all seniors but #18 Charlie Kushmider, a humorous pattern. The quarter ended with a 13-2 Titan Domination. It grew much worse for Kennedy as the 2nd quarter started. The Titans continued to stay strong in making sure the lead grew even longer. Mercy Rule did not apply for the Titans as it only goes into effect in the 2nd half. Johnson put in more blast to continue the strong lead, scoring the opening goal in the 2nd quarter. The Titans scored 6 more additional goals with the entire quarter staying in Kennedy territory, with goalie True Hawkins having no worries. #2 Johnathan Windt scored two strong long shot goals, then hitting a celebratory backflip once he gained the hat-trick. The first half ended 20-2. The Mercy rule finally started as the 2nd half started but remained much quieter for the Titans. Substitutes entered the game for the Titan with little starters staying in Play. #11 Donovan Carnell started the 2nd half with two additional goals as the half started and was the 3rd senior player of the game to achieve a hat trick. Kennedy only took 1 shot in the 3rd as the defense struggled in allowing Johnson to record his 8th goal of the game. The quarter ended with a 23-2 Titan blowout. The 4th quarter only remained with JV bump ups getting their playtime for Einstein and Kennedy playing for good morale. #8 Evan Vonkerczeck scored his first varsity goal near the 4:30 mark. Vonkerczeck later scored a highlight reel spin move shot seconds later. Windt’s brother, #25 AJ Windnt also scored along with his brother and hit the same backflip move his brother performed. The final regular game season drained out for the seniors with a final score of 27-2 with an Einstein Victory. The Titans finish the season with an 8-4 record as the Kennedy Cavaliers finish the heart-crushing season winless with a 0-12 record.

In a fierce battle that came down to the final seconds, the Edgewood Rams edged out the Joppatowne Mariners 9–8 in a high-octane boys lacrosse matchup marked by relentless back-and-forth action, physical play, and dramatic momentum swings. From the first whistle, both teams came out swinging—trading goals and matching each other’s intensity in a contest that never saw either side pull far ahead. The game was a true tug-of-war, with each possession met by resistance and each goal answered with urgency. The Rams saw standout performances across the board: Joram Jensen led the scoring effort with a hat trick, while Ezra England delivered two critical goals and controlled the clock late in the game with expert ball handling under pressure. Kareem Wallace contributed a goal and an assist, Khalile Brice and Jarrod Burton each added one, and Adrian Wright found the net as well. As tensions mounted in the closing minutes, England’s composure proved decisive. With Edgewood clinging to a one-goal lead, he held possession at the Mariners’ end, bleeding the clock and drawing heavy defensive pressure as the seconds ticked away. His control helped secure the win, silencing a late Joppatowne push and sealing a hard-fought victory. The gritty win moves Edgewood forward with momentum, while Joppatowne walks away with heads high after a tenacious performance in one of the season’s most thrilling contests.
