Kaleah Anderson (Glen Burnie) and Chloe Greenway (Oakland Mills) earned MVP honors in a back-and-forth battle. Anderson got things rolling early, knocking down a three to open the scoring—setting the tone for a game full of shot attempts on both sides. A standout from Anne Arundel showed out as well, making a big impact throughout the game. Anne Arundel led 37-29 at the half, but Howard County came out of the break firing, going on a 12-0 run to flip the momentum. Lauer caught fire in the second half, drilling a logo three and following it up with another from the top of the key. Howard County took a 64-60 lead with just over 3 minutes left and held a one-point edge with 30 seconds remaining. But Anne Arundel responded with a clutch bucket to take the lead late. Anne Arundel escapes with a 69-68 win. 🔥

Great game! S.P. Had 16 seconds for the win, but man-to-man D trapped the corner … poor shot & missed follow-up at the buzzers. Both teams played well, MERVO more physical & athletic, S.P. a little more polished with excellent D. throughout game.

 It was a beautiful Monday evening weather wise making it perfect opportunity to highlight some good ole Anne Arundel County Football. The game was happening at Northeast High School in Pasadena, Maryland. The Eagles were looking to get their first victory of the season; and it needed to be accomplished in their house, the Eagles Nest. Coming off a tough loss to St. Paul’s, they were ready to right the wrongs of past mistakes on the field. However, the Falcons of Severna Park were looking to keep any of that from happening. The stage was set for some good JV Football action. 
GAME RECAP 1ST QTR - This is the messy quarter. Teams pretty much strategize trying to figure each other out seeking to go down and distance. Both teams tried to establish their run game early while their defenses sought impose their will on its opponent. It was a tennis match for majority of the 1st until the Eagles were able to move down the field on a drive and punch it in the end zone for six. They added extra points with a two point conversion leaving the score coming to 8-0. Severna Park still determined made a good effort to answer back. 2ND QTR - This round was the momentum builder. Eagles possessed the ball at the beginning until an interception that gave the Falcons a big push needed for them to get back in the game. Unsuccessful add points though, the Eagles had possession again. Severing Park was able to stop Northeast, but couldn’t answer back even after one time getting the ball back after a muffed punt. On pretty much the last ensuing drive Northeast added 6 more points. I had to excuse myself missing them score. The half ended when I returned with the Northeast Eagles up 14-0.
 3RD-4TH QTRS - It was during this half that Northeast found its rhythm and turned up the heat. With Eagles QB, Marcus Jones III showing off his throwing capabilities, and over 80 TD scored off a short pass; the Eagles dominated the second half. This made it difficult for Severna Park to catch up. Northeast capitalized in the end winning 34-0.

 I wouldn’t say in the least that the Falcons laid down and folded. No, they fought and they fought well. They truly possess what it takes to win. I enjoyed seeing their run game, even when stopped they did not abandon it. Much success to you Severna Park, keep working and grinding. Congratulations to the Northeast Eagles on the victory. You deserve to flap those arms like the wings of eagles. You defiantly have some “dawgs” on your squad. Keep working on the things you know need to be better. Much success to you. Dig, set, spike - that’s right, volleyball is back in Anne Arundel County. As the season is looking to be underway, these are the top ten teams to look out for this season. 1. Broadneck: Last season, Broadneck was ranked first in the Anne Arundel County region according to MaxPreps and advanced to the Class 4A Maryland High School Volleyball Finals, but lost to Richard Montgomery. Almost every game they won, they completely dominated the opposing team, winning in three sets the majority of the time. The Bruins will have Sydney Lawrence, who was named the Capital Gazette Player of the Year, return for them in the fall, alongside Kennedy Smith. Both Lawrence and Smith earned All-Metro Honors at the end of the season. 2. Old Mill: Old Mill became the 3A regional champions in 2024, marking the second consecutive year they have won this title, having also won the 4A title in 2023. However, they had an early exit in the Class 3A Maryland playoffs. This season, the Patriots are losing ten seniors, so it will be interesting to see how they adapt to new players taking the court. 3. Arundel: The Wildcats experienced a decline last season, following a 25-1 record in 2023. Arundel was able to beat Broadneck and Severna Park, but also fell to the two teams above. The good news for them is that Bailey Swinton, who hit 1,000-plus digs last season, will be returning for Arundel in the fall. 4. Severna Park: The Falcons started their season on a five-game winning streak before taking their first loss to Arundel. Severna Park failed to beat Broadneck, Old Mill, and Arundel last season. If they want to improve their standings, they need to be able to compete with the top teams above them in their region. 5. Annapolis: The Panthers have shown improvement in their record from the past two seasons, moving up the standings in 2023 and 2024. Annapolis will have middle hitter Lindsay Lyman return, but lose outside hitter Christen Brisbane, who was named to the 2nd team All-County last season. If they can continue to stay on the upward path of improvement, they have a good chance of securing the top seed in the Anne Arundel region. 6. Severn Run: Last season was the Wolves' first season, as the school had opened in 2024. Within their first season, Severn Run was somewhat inconsistent, going on two or three-game winning streaks, but then dropping a game in between those winning streaks. They also fell to Broadneck twice and Old Mill. To rank them higher, improvement and consistency need to be prioritized in year two. 7. Meade: After starting strong in the beginning of the season, the Mustangs had a tough October, dropping games to Severna Park and Annapolis. Although they showed improvement, they must demonstrate consistency in their wins throughout the entire season to gain ground in their standings. 8. Crofton: The Cardinals took a down year last season. Although they were regional champions last season, they must be able to be reliable and compete with top teams in their region and county. They face teams like Annapolis and Broadneck early in the season, so depending on how the Cardinals fare, that will set the tone and give them an identity for the rest of the season. 9. Archbishop Spalding: Although Spalding is not in the same region as the teams above, they showed slight improvement from the 2023 season. However, they face teams such as Maryvale Prep and Mount de Sales, who stand atop the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM). With outside hitter Maddy Mauro and middle blocker Ashlee Overley returning for the Cavaliers, that will give them some depth going into this season. 10. St. Mary’s High School (Annapolis): Like Spalding, St. Mary’s had shown improvement last season. However, like the teams above, they were not able to stay persistent against their competition. That would be something they would have to change to move up the standings in the IAAM.

2025 Anne Arundel County Field Hockey Rankings It’s almost that time of the year: fall sports are back in action! Field hockey is a big sport within the Anne Arundel County area, so before the season starts, let’s see who fares the best going into late August. 1. Crofton Last season, Crofton completed a three-peat, winning their third straight state title. This will be the Cardinals’ fifth season as a team. Even though they come into the season with 17 seniors gone, such as goalie Ryleigh Osborne, who is headed to the University of Maryland, head coach Amy Skrickus plans to adapt to this change by adding some members of last year’s JV team to this year’s varsity squad. 2. Archbishop Spalding Even though Spalding lost in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) championship, they only suffered one loss. They were at the top of their conference last season with 17 wins and a .921 win percentage. However, this season comes with a lot of change, as this will be the first season without longtime coach Leslee Brady. Spalding announced in February that former Spalding player and assistant coach Logan Edmondson will be taking over. 3. Broadneck Although both Broadneck and Crofton had similar records last season, the Bruins ultimately fell to Crofton in the 4A championship game. However, they were able to grab wins last season against Crofton and Severna Park, even going on a seven-game win streak. 4. Severna Park The Falcons were able to take home a 3A state championship last season after defeating Westminster. Although they played their competitions tightly, against teams like Broadneck and Arundel, they had returners who shone in their championship win, including Grace Redmond. However, many key players, including all-around position player Ava Zimmerman and goalie Camryn Lowman, departed last season. 5. South River Last season, South River had a tough schedule to start out with, going against Bryn Mawr and Huntingtown; however, they quickly turned it around, winning three games in a row, shutting out their opponents. Eight seniors departed from last year’s squad, including Salisbury commit forward/midfielder Kelly Webber; however, the 2024 Capital Gazette Second Team freshman, Emma Bonaccorsy, will return at goalie. 6. North County North County made it to the state quarterfinals last year and the regional championships. With the loss of seven seniors, they will have their schedule tested against top teams such as Glen Burnie and Broadneck. 7. St. Mary’s Annapolis St. Mary’s was at the top of the Varsity B Conference with a 10-0-0 record in conference play, and ended the season with a six-game win streak and won their IAAM Championship game against John Carroll. However, other top teams such as Spalding and Bryn Mawr stand in the way of them being the real IAAM “top-dogs.” 8. Chesapeake The Cougars' wins were spread out in pieces, where they would go on three-game win streaks, and then drop a game or two. If they want to stay consistent, they will be able to compete with other schools in their region, such as Severna Park and South River, whom Chesapeake fell to last season. 9. Glen Burnie Glen Burnie had a four-game losing streak at the beginning of last season, but then they were able to turn it around. However, they did not face top opponents listed in the power rankings higher up, which made their competition easier, but also meant they were not being tested as well. 10. Arundel Arundel struggled at the beginning of the season last year, falling to opponents who scored two goals or fewer. The Wildcats need to start scoring goals against their opponents, even to have a chance to compete with other teams.

Gavin Sheets, Gilman ‘14, and Jackson Merrill, Severna Park ‘21, play right next to each other in the Padres outfield, but the two lefties took vastly different journeys to reach San Diego. As a Severna Park senior, Jackson Merrill hit an even .500 with a program record of 13 home runs for the Falcons in 2021. MLB Pipeline ranked him as the 79th-best prospect that year. The Padres were highly impressed with his athleticism and drafted him 27th overall in one of the biggest draft day jumps. He became the first player since 2000 to be drafted out of Severna Park. The then-shortstop rocketed through the minor leagues to become a consensus top 15 prospect in baseball before the 2024 season. The Padres challenged him to learn to play center field in early 2024 and push for a spot on the team. Without playing a single game at the Triple-A level, Merrill made the major league roster as the starting centerfielder. The Padres' rookie hit the ground running offensively and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting. Merrill posted the third-most valuable season for a Padres centerfielder in franchise history, according to wins above replacement. He has continued the strong production this season with a .304 batting average and strong defense. Gavin Sheets signed a minor league deal with the Padres on Feb. 9 after a down 2024 with the Chicago White Sox. He made the major league roster after impressing in spring training with six home runs, tied for the MLB lead. Sheets immediately rewarded the team's confidence on Opening Day with a pinch-hit game-tying home run in his first at-bat, fueling the Padres' comeback win against the Atlanta Braves. Gilman Baseball Head Coach Larry Sheets, Gavin’s father and a former MLB player, spoke with CSZ Network and emphasized how the change of scenery unlocked a new level for Gavin. “***'s put him in a great setting in San Diego. The coaches are terrific and they were able to break down his flaws and get him back on the right track…You've got to feel like you're wanted and I think that's the other thing that's going on in San Diego that didn't go on in Chicago,” Coach Sheets said. Sheets made multiple key adjustments to turn the page on his 2024 season. His contact quality improved with a 54.2% hard hit rate, the highest of his career. Sheets also took massive strides against fastballs with a .615 slugging percentage near the top of the league. The 29-year-old has been one of the best hitters in baseball with 12 home runs, 42 RBIs and an .801 OPS. Sheets has also supplied numerous clutch moments for the Padres. He has the fourth most home runs in the National League to tie the game or take the lead. With his breakout success, Sheets could become an All-Star for the first time. No Maryland high school player has made an All-Star Game as a designated hitter since Hall of Famer Harold Baines in 1999. Beyond the accolades, Sheets has already given back to his community. Coach Sheets described how his son’s success impacts the current Gilman roster. “To see somebody come from Gilman, which is a small school…and know that they've been able to make it, I think it just gives you hope. A lot of the kids are excited about watching his progress and I think deep down they feel like ‘well shoot, if he can do it, then you know I can do it as well,’” Coach Sheets said.

The Severna Park boys' lacrosse team has won nine straight lacrosse titles in Maryland Class 4A or 3A for nine consecutive years. Although the winning culture has existed for almost a decade, brotherhood and leadership mean even more. "It means a lot because a lot of these guys we've been playing with for a while," said senior attacker Jack Fish. Fish stated that some players have been playing together since they were five, which helped grow their bond on and off the field. The team would eat at Chick-fil-A after Saturday morning practice during the season. The friendship and familiarity on and off the field, alongside second-year head coach Bob Zichelli, helped propel the team to a 19-1 record. "There's no cliques on our team," senior attacker Timmy Sullivan stated. "We're just one giant group, just all best friends. And it's truly just an amazing experience with all the boys." Zichelli, who finished his second year at Severna Park, has been a mentor for the athletes. Throughout his two years, the team has seen the lacrosse program grow, and Zichelli has put trust in his players. "I think he gives us a lot of freedom to play how we want to play and lead the team how we want to lead the team," said Fish. With the senior class departing and the upcoming seniors taking over, they all believe the program has a bright future ahead of them.

The lacrosse factory of Anne Arundel County, Severna Park Falcons (who possess several state titles), battle at Mustang Stadium Howard County’s own, the Marriotts Ridge Mustangs. The stage was set for a lacrosse banger. And that’s just what it was.

Both teams came out firing but the Ridge gained a little lead before the Falcons were able to tie it up at the half. And the second half was similar only this time Severna Park took the lead. However, the Mustangs were able to answer back and took a 1pt lead late in the 4th. BIG SHOUTS to the Severna Park FALCONS, proud of the success you ladies achieved this season. From the first whistle to the last, today's state championship game was a battle. Both teams played tremendously, consistently answering to one another's attacks. Until today, the Severna Park Falcons girls lacrosse team was 17-2, wow! This year they have been led by captains Erin Hussey, Bella Van Gieson, Payton Jeffers, Maria Bragg, and Avery Saviano. Junior, Maria Bragg (#12) kept the Falcons in the game towards the end of the first half and into the second with three consecutive goals. Bragg has committed to the University of Florida to continue her lacrosse career at the college level. Severna Park maintained a very fast-paced game, Ava Deegan (#9) scored the Falcons first goal just 12 seconds after the draw was initiated. The Falcons are loaded with players committed to play lacrosse in college and should be proud of the legacy they have preserved at Severna Park. At the end of the third quarter the score was 8-10. Meaning, the Marriotts Ridge Mustangs went the whole fourth quarter without letting Severna Park score. Freshman goalie, Shannen Krozy (#21) had a stellar performance in goal, denying many of Severna Park’s scoring opportunities. In total there were 4 yellow cards, 3 against Severna Park and just 1 against Marriotts Ridge. The Mustangs were able to capitalize each time they were woman-up on the field. Clare Jenkins (#9) did a notable job clearing the ball from the defensive end in transition. The 6 different players that scored today for the Mustangs were Jenna Cratin, Hayden Baumgartner, Sedona Kaplan, Sophia McGinnis, Allison Custer, and Katie Leader. Congrats Mustangs!
