https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpSpyJDVQoI 🏈🏈 ROAD TO ANNAPOLIS
🆚 Laurel vs Blake MPSSAA 4A NORTH ROUND 1 PLAYOFFS 📍 Silver Spring , Maryland (James Hubert Blake HS) Walking down the hill to the football field (which they refer to as “the jungle”) at James Hubert Blake High School, the setting was absolutely perfect for playoff football. I could see the Bengals players going through their pregame drills. One, they were trying to stay war. Two, they seemed to be preparing for battle. The weather: COLD, but absolutely perfect conditions for MPSSAA playoff football. Soon, the Bengals exited to prepare for entering in during game time. The Laurel Spartans bus pulled up and I greeted some of the staff, and it looked like Laurel was ready for battle. The smell of playoff football was in the air. Let see how this went down

 GAME RECAP

Laurel received the kickoff in the first half after winning the coin toss. Their goal appeared to be control the time of possession, go down the field and put points on the board. First drive was unsuccessful and they ended up punting to the Bengals. Blake was also unsuccessful on their attempt to score. The momentum shift came when Blake blocked a punt by Laurel and walked it in to the end zone. This put Laurel in a position to now play catch up. The Bengals went on to add 7 more points in the second quarter, which furthered Laurel’s chances for a comeback. However, there was plenty of game left to play. The Spartans were able to put 6 points on the board with touchdown pass to their wide receiver. Although the field goal attempt was halted, Spartans felt they had a game now to conquer. Coming out in the second half, third quarter shifted to Laurel. After getting a safety, they took advantage and let their receivers make some big plays which gave the Spartans the lead. Things were heating up but this is the essence of playoff football. With the looming 4th quarter coming, both teams were seeking to lock in and secure victory.
It is ourselves at times that can get in our own way. I think the coaches on the Spartans would agree with me, this was the shifter of the 4th quarter. Costly errors, which happens with all of us, the Bengals took advantage which led them to end the game with a 33-15 win over their opponent Laurel.
TO THE SPARTANS, lessons learned and SUPER PROUD of the success you achieved this season. You improved, and SHINED out there. KEEP GRINDING like you guys always do. Love y’all and wish you the best. Always encouraged by your honesty and integrity you guys possess. You represent PG County well, you should be proud. TO THE BENGALS, Congratulations on the victory. SO HAPPY, you received a playoff victory but I know your coaches will have you focused now on the next challenge ahead. KEEP THAT FOCUS and LOCK IN. Absolutely love your energy; got DAWGS on your squad. Keep your foot on the gas and WORK HARD. Definitely look forward to more coverage of you guys. MUCH SUCCESS.

BOTH of you guys are well coached teams. Stay on your grind. This MoCo vs PG competition needs to happen more often. LOVE IT, and the respect runs deep. MORE HEIGHTS TO REACH for y’all. MUCH SUCCESS TO YOU BOTH

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikKnJsx8iJk 🏈🏈 GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL OVERTIME SHOWDOWN @ THE 300
🆚 High Point vs Laurel 📍 Laurel, Maryland

On a chilly Thursday night, Laurel High School held a girls flag football game between the High Point Eagles of Beltsville and the Laurel Spartans of Laurel. Though not a new sport to our country, it is new for local schools surrounding the DMV, as the NFL seeks to make it apart of athletic competition high schools around the country. The stage was set for both teams as these ladies seem very eager and determined to master this game of flag football. This game kept you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. High Point started with the ball in the first half, making some good plays, relying on the speed and toughness of their offensive attack. Laurel answered by leveraging the quickness of their receivers to the outside. BUT, the grand highlight of this competition was DEFENSE. Their defenses kept both offenses from scoring the entire period of regular regulation play. Both of the 6 points came off of defensive pick 6’s.
The first overtime proved to be the same, as both team’s D’s kept one another out of the end zone. The second overtime, Laurel scored a 1pt conversion passing the ball to their center They then stopped the Eagles from completing their one point conversion (NOTE: Teams could have elected to go for 2. It appeared to be wise to remain conservative at this point).

TO THE SPARTANS, CONGRATS on the double overtime victory. Proud of you. Celebrate and enjoy it. Continue putting in the hard work. You ladies are no doubt locked in.

TO THE EAGLES, keep soaring and flying high. I loved the communication and speed you have on your team. Keep working and achieving success in this beginning season of your sport. Proud of you too.

WISHING YOU BOTH much future success on and off the field.

🏈🏈 THURSDAY NIGHT JV FOOTBALL @ THE 300
🆚 Frederick Douglass vs. Laurel JV Football

For about two years now, I have been asked to cover a JV football game at the 300. Finally, I was able to make it out to a JV game. The atmosphere at the 300 (Laurel High School) was great. Fans were out supporting their JV teams. Weather was at a nice temperature perfect for football. The Spartans were looking to capitalize on their home field advantage. This was a night to make a big impact on the county. Frederick Douglass, wanted to make sure victory was in their hands and not the home field opponent. The stage was set for an epic battle: The Frederick Douglass Eagles coming in to Laurel High School to take on the Laurel Spartans

 1ST QTR
The Spartans received the kickoff and had a good footing as they march down the field. A few handoffs were successful, then Douglass DLine began filling the gaps stopping Laurel’s advancement. Laurel took some a chance and did convert on 4th down, unfortunately it didn’t lead to adding points on the board. The ball was then in the hands of Douglass, who also was able to move the ball for a bit. This was pretty much a back and forth round with no one scoring.

 2ND QTR
The beginning of the quarter all the way to nearing the end, pretty much stayed consistent with the flow of the previous period. There were a few missed opportunities on both sides; even though both teams were successful at freezing each other’s drives. Then under two minutes left in the half, the Eagles made good field position off a punt return. An unexpected pass ensued and the Eagles were now 1st and goal. Touchdown, then a failed to succeed at a 2pt conversion, still put them in a good position. The pressure now was on Laurel to answer back. Not enough time though because the half ended.

 3RD & 4TH QTRS
With the Eagles determined to add to their lead, they didn’t expect an onside sick from the Spartans in the beginning of the 3rd. Spartans recovered. Now, a new momentum shift began to take place. The ball was in Laurel’s hands. Struggles from the previous quarters arose, and they were unable to complete the drive. That didn’t slow down their fight to win. Douglass added another touchdown and a made the two point conversion this time. The fourth, was a lot like the first. However, nearing the end the Spartans tried to air the ball out; a nice through got intercepted. This turnover allowed the Douglass Eagles to run the clock out and secure their victory.

Applause is warranted for the effort and fight the Spartans put in. Your energy and desire to win is in the right place. Like coaches already instruct, take practices seriously, coming in ready to work. I don’t doubt you’ll gain good ground as the season moves on. Eagles of Frederick Douglass, congratulations on your win. Hard work paid off, happy to see you guys accomplish one of your goals. It’s a new week now Eagles and Spartans. Take in the lessons, and build from the wisdom of your coaches. Now go and be great!!!!! MillerFlow

🏈🏈 FIRST FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS @ LAUREL HIGH SCHOOL 🆚 Parkdale x Laurel
🏈Varsity Football,

 POST GAME RECAP
Entered the locker room at the 300 (Laurel High School), where you could smell football in the air. Coaches were going over plays, some were listening to music; getting minds set for the big matchup against a team they had not beaten in a while, the Parkdale Panthers. The, it was time to enter the field for warmups. Things seemed serious now. Stretching, drills, all was ready to be left on the field for Friday Night under the Lights.

Parkdale came on the field with big energy. Focused and looking to defeat their opponents once again. One thing to highlight about Prince George’s County teams, they have a very distinct unity, especially the coaches. Though don’t play around during battle, you could see their bond shines through the competition. The stage was set for the Panthers to take on the Laurel Spartans

1st Half
Didn’t know what to expect as Laurel received the kickoff. Coach Powell had kept pretty quiet about what he had coming (as he should). A few run plays ensued and the Panthers were able to stop things for a minute. A few more runs helped the Spartans impose their will on the Panthers. Laurel scored off a short TD pass in to the end zone.

It wasn’t long the ball was back in Laurel’s hands. A big tuddy came as the QB launched it deep, WR avoiding tackles sliding easily in to the end zone. Pretty much majority of Laurel’s points were scored in this half. Things were off to a great start for Laurel.

 2nd Half

Spartan Cheerleaders and fans brought some great energy supporting its players. However, the Panthers were determined to make this a game. And they did. Panthers moved the football down the field off some big gains and eventually scored. The momentum shifted off a muffed punt. Parkdale picked it up and went right in to the end zone. I discovered that on punt returns, a team recovering a **** cannot score off it, so the ball is marked a the point of recovery. Remember, this was a momentum shifter, and after a 4th down play the Panthers put another 6 on the board. We have a football game ladies and gentlemen.

It was evident Laurel needed to answer with a score. Then, they finally found a drive to spread their lead scoring off a QB keeper. Had MFV yelling, “okay, okay…..TOUCHDOWN!!!!!” This didn’t stop Parkdale though, they answered with another TD off 4th down. Wide open receiver trotted right in the end zone.

A bit of back and forth ensued and on the final drive, the Parkdale team brought the ball past the 50 yard line. The defense of Laurel stood tall, and the Spartans were victorious. What really was impressive was the sportsmanship between the two squads throughout the game. Players helped each other up and exemplified what it means to have respect..

May the Parkdale Panthers continue being successful, growing, and toughing things out. Keep shining you guys. Laurel congrats on the win. Thank you for your honesty about the adjustments you need to make. As always, appreciate the LOVE MFV always receives every time at the 300. It’s one of my favorite schools to visit. Success to all
.
Much Love;

First recorded playoff for MPSSAA LAX is in the books. I normally slice the videos down to about 15-17 minutes. However, this battle was epic and so the YT vid is about 27 minutes long. Both teams came out swinging and Laurel took a good lead in the first half. Near halftime, the Gladiators started to cut down the Spartans lead. The same happened until the fourth quarter and it was Northwood who led by one. Laurel tied the game sending the game in to overtime. Northwood sealed the deal with a goal under 3 minutes left in OT. It was a tough loss and great victory handled with class from BOTH teams. First BIG THANK YOU to LAUREL ATHLETICS, who has always been hospitable to MFV, from the fans, leaders, coaches, and players. SHOUTS to the SPARTANS, keep shining as you have already done. BIG CONGRATS to the GLADIATORS, much success to you in the next round. Enjoy the highlights!!!!
