Heading into the final month of the regular season, Montgomery County has five schools that have reached double-digit win titans, while Whitman remains undefeated at 11-0. Fresh off a week off from last week’s snowstorm, high-stakes games are starting as early as today. Beyond top-tier games, multiple teams are vying for the county’s top spot. Here are the most important storylines that are emerging from Montgomery County Girls Varsity Basketball: 1. The county’s top tier teams are playing other top tier teams. On Monday, the first day back, 9-5 Walter Johnson will travel to face 11-1 Churchill, while 9-3 Wootton will host the Whitman Vikings, looking to give the team their first loss. Also this week, Magruder will travel to Sherwood, Clarksburg will face Poolesville, Walter Johnson will go to Quince Orchard, and Wootton will face Churchill. With that said, the undisputable game of the month will happen this Wednesday, as the county’s top teams, the 11-1 Bulldogs will face off against the 11-0 Vikings. The winner is set to take the MoCo lead. 2. While the top teams will play the top teams, programs on the other end of the standings will also face off against each other. The 1-10-1 Wheaton Knights will face off against a 1-11 Northwood squad on Monday evening. Northwood will then travel to take on the 3-9 Blair Blazers while Seneca Valley faces Watkins Mill. These are just a few of the games that the bottom county teams are set to face, all of which will happen in the first week back. 3. The Einstein Titans have been killing their divisional opponents. Throughout the season, five of eight of their wins came against in-region rivals. Out of their final eight games, six will be against their regional opponents, with the other two coming against Watkins Mill and Wootton in two of the final three weeks of the season. Despite dropping three of their last five, the Titans have a great opportunity to rise up the county standings. 4. Wootton’s final eight opponents looks to cause several problems. Each of their next four games will come against teams with winning records, including 11-0 Whitman, 7-6 Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 11-1 Churchill, and 7-4 Quince Orchard. Then, after games against Northwest and Blake, the Patriots will finish their season on the road against 9-5 Walter Johnson and at home against 8-4 Einstein. As the team looks to get to double-digit wins, these final eight games may keep them from getting beyond eleven, but taking two to three of the six should be considered a win for Wootton.
Photo courtesy of @lensofariela Instagram. Through 10 games, Einstein girls’ basketball sits with a record of 7-3. Last season, it accumulated 10 wins across the entire campaign. There’s still 10 games left to play this season, with a chance to blow that win total out of the water. And this team still has years to continue to develop. “This is a young team with no seniors,” said head coach Travis Rice. “That allows me to take my time with them, focus on teaching, skill development, and growth, knowing I have at least two more years with this group. That makes the process exciting and rewarding.” And Rice has been rewarded with stellar play from some of his best players thus far. Sophomore Chace Tucker, who won Montgomery County Rookie of the Year in 2024-25, is currently averaging 19 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists per game. Rice noted her ability to lead the team in a vocal manner while setting the tone on the court with her play. But Tucker hasn’t been the only impact player on the team. Isabella Smith has stormed into the arena as a freshman, already averaging 13 points and four steals per game. Her aggressiveness has stood out to Rice, and she’s proven to be a valuable asset on both ends of the floor. Ethel Ndi — a scrappy, energetic and competitive player — and Zaria Grigby — a three-year varsity veteran who is quieter but leads by example — also stand out to Rice as some of the team’s leaders. With a mix of personalities and leadership styles, it’s no wonder that the Titans have emerged as a contender in the county. And Rice knew the team was prepared. “Having girls who are eager to learn and improve right from the beginning of the season has made a difference,” he said. “Most of the girls participated in Summer League, Fall League, or both, allowing them to get to know one another while gaining extra basketball experience before the Winter season began.” Einstein embarked on a four-game winning streak after an early loss — Rice noted that the team's positivity during their film session following the loss grew the group’s confidence. And its “nothing easy” mindset has propelled the team into a defensively-oriented squad that’s beginning to flourish on the offensive end. “We are guard-heavy and have a lot of speed, so I want us pushing the pace as much as possible, wearing teams down and forcing them to try to keep up with us,” Rice said. “At the same time, we are teaching them how to execute in the half court, understanding that everything will not come from fast-break opportunities.” With the Titans dropping two of their last three contests to some other juggernauts in Montgomery County, the team will need that same confident mentality to help it get back on track. But given the team’s identity, that may not be too difficult. “Our team culture is very strong,” Rice said. “The girls genuinely like and support one another, and I believe that is the first, and most important, part of building a successful team. When they enjoy being together not just on the court but also off the court, it makes everything on the court smoother and allows coaching and growth to happen more naturally.” But no matter the end result, there’s no question that Einstein is forging its mark as one of the premier teams in the county. And Rice wouldn’t trade his team for anyone. “I really enjoy everything about coaching this team. This is a special group of girls who are fun to be around and constantly make me laugh,” he said. “What I love most is that they genuinely love basketball—they want to learn, they want to get better, and they show up every day with no excuses. There have even been times when players were sick and still came to practice, and I had to send them home or shut things down. Just knowing how much they want to be there means a lot.”

The Boys’s Varsity Basketball game followed with a gym full of energy as the game started off with back and forth buckets. But as the game went on, the Wildcat’s offense took over. It passed its early test, capturing an 8-7 shootout victory over fellow Montgomery County foe Springbrook, before turning its attention to another familiar county opponent in Blake — the No. 1-seed in its regional bracket. Einstein’s familiarity with Blake was opportune; it had the Bengals’ number after a 5-1 victory earlier in the season. The four-point loss was just one of three defeats Blake suffered all season, and the only one it lost by more than a goal. The Titans channeled that success against Blake once more Friday, demolishing the Bengals, 4-1. Einstein made inroads in the first 10 minutes of action, peppering the net with a few chances that weren’t quite close or powerful enough to be true threats. In fact, it was Blake that had the first premier scoring opportunity of the afternoon, rotating the ball around the edge of the box until an open shot from the right side of the cage opened itself up — the shot crossed the net and outstretched arms of Einstein’s keeper before pinging off the post. Just minutes later, a point blank cross to the center of Blake’s box failed to truly connect with the boot of a Titan attacker, whose shot was scooped up by the Bengals’ diving goalkeeper. The momentum was palpable, though, and on Einstein’s side. That became even more clear over the ensuing minutes. Two close-range free kicks and roughly 15 minutes later, the Titans hit paydirt for their first of four scores of the game. This one came on a free kick from 20 yards out, sneaking around the close side of the defensive wall and fooling Blake’s goalkeeper, who was late on the dive. Blake was able to answer back just before the half. Alhaji B. Koroma took a perfect touch to the center of the field off a throw in. With defenders on all sides, he swung a rope from the top of the box into the bottom right corner, knotting things before the half. The Titans had to keep a few of the Bengals’ shots at bay before the second half, but once they did, the floodgates opened. Around halfway through the second half, Einstein struck again. This time, an intercepted pass on Blake’s back line gave the Titans’ attacker free room to close in on net. A contested shot bounced past Blake’s goalkeeper, who believed it was heading wide of the net. Instead, it hit the back of the net, giving Einstein a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Just two minutes later, a free kick from all the way on Einstein’s half of the field was pelted deep by its goalkeeper, reaching Blake’s box. Though it was initially punched by Blake’s keeper, the ensuing rebound was promptly put home by the Titans’ swarming attackers. Einstein added extra insurance on a score with 13 minutes left. An Einstein wing flanked the edge of the box, heavily guarded by a Blake defender, but still managed to flick the ball over the keeper on the near side of the net and secure the win. Einstein will take on Richard Montgomery in Round Three next; it previously lost to the Rockets 1-0 on Sept. 29.

In there final home game of the season, the Rockets of Richard Montgomery were brilliant on both sides of the ball. The defense made huge plays while making the Titans offense look small while earning there second shutout of the season. Dazzling DE Kim Mendoza pulled flag after flag in the backfield causing multiple losses of yards and three and outs. The secondary was also dominant with a season high four interceptions, taking two to the house. One by senior stallworth Ella Cummings and the other by up and coming Freshman (DB) Anjolie Dilaire. Not to be outdone, Frosh DB Katelyn Marchetti continues to impress garnering two more pics, adding to her team lead. With a couple more INT's in the season finale, the freshman standout has an outside chance of finishing with double digit interceptions. The offense had arguably there best performance of the year, as they moved the ball consistently. They were once again led by their precocious Freshman QB Serach Jackson who was clicking on all cylinders. Her rare blend of passing and running was on full display as she completed passes to five different receivers. Composure was key as she ran the two-minute drill to perfection throwing two big completions, running for a couple of first downs before ending the drive by escaping heavy pressure to find Abigail Mukunn for her first touchdown, the season. Jackson then used her legs to get the extra point as the Rockets surged ahead 7-0 to end the half and never looked back. The second half was even more impressive as the Rocket's offense controlled the game with a very efficient and balanced attack. Their Fab Freshman QB found Zyah Smith (WR) for a long bomb to storm into to the redzone. Next their speedy Lamborghini quarterback scrambled and easily won the race to the right pylon for the touchdown. Anjolie Dilaire caught the pass for the extra point. Coach Mensah has his [Rockettes] at 6-3, and peaking at the right time winning a season high three in a row. His young team of talented underclassmen along with their two indispensable seniors appears to be figuring it out just in time for the playoffs. They close the regular season on the road against the Baron's of BCC needing a win to finish at 7-3.

On October 7, the Albert Einstein Titans faced off the Whitman Vikings in a 3-1 defeat. Whitman won the coin toss and elected to take possession first. The game kicked off with a strong Titan defensive start as the Vikings quickly marched onto Titan territory. 5 mins into the half, the Titans were first to add points onto the board, taking advantage from a pass mistake by the Vikings, allowing #20 Chase Tucker to trace the ball down and score an easy one-on-one situation. It only took seconds after the goal for Whitman to tie the game, going down the field straight out of kickoff and taking a shot. The shot was saved by #0 Maya Garnett, but rebounded straight to Whitman and allowed #8 Maika Lotsch scored the tap-in goal, bringing the game equal once again at 1-1. Defensive errors from the Vikings almost handed the Titans a second goal for the night. A miscommunicated pass landed in the hands of Tucker for the second time and shot left side of the goal, hitting the goalpost and barely saved by Vikings goalkeeper #99 Hannah Lewington. 30 minutes into the half, the match remained neck-and-neck as Einstein was playing well built defense, where the game remained to be in Einstein’s side of the field. Einstein showed better signs of possession into Whitman territory, becoming more accurate with their passes but couldn’t find that goal-opening lane and be able to march down the field. Whitman had the speed advantage over the Titans, yet they couldn't attempt any shots inside the penalty box. Time drained out as the first half ended, remaining even at 1-1. The second half kicked off with Whitman continuing to stay in Titan possession, a major pattern that continued to improve for the Vikings. A penalty was called in favor for the Vikings, giving Whitman their first lead of the game from penalty taker #6 Ailya Wales, going up 2-1. Whitman continued to dominate time of possession. 15 minutes into the half, Einstein had not recorded a single shot, knowing that Whitman marked down Einstein players with fast aggressiveness. Marking down Einstein attackers started to trend by Whitman’s defense. Two or three defenders were seen pressuring an Einstein player when maintaining possession, pocketing the player and forcing them to lose possession. 25 minutes into the half, Whitman increased their lead to 3-1 after a corner cross was deflected that allowed #17, Kaitlyn Garnett, to take the shot in the crowd of players and get the ball back of the net. The Titan defense started to look physically drained from Whitman’s dominance on possession, also not receiving much help from the offense. Time ticked down, as the Whitman Vikings walked out with a 3-1 victory over the Titans.
On October 3, the Albert Einstein boys soccer team faced the Northwood Gladiators in 1-1 dig pink draw. The game kicked off with balanced momentum between both teams, with Northwood grabbing two quick corners but was not able to progress with them. The Titans would have a big chance with a through pass by #11 Nathan Ramirez, getting the pass off from some player scuffling to #13 Maicol Salas but shot wide right. 10 minutes into the first, possession was demonstrated to be in Einstein's favor, with most of the Titan’s key passes keeping the game in Gladiator territory. Defense held up strong for the Gladiators, blocking shots attempted by the Titans. Multiple key passes from the Titans were knocked off a Northwood defender, keeping the game in their favor possession wise, but weren’t able to create big chances. Ramirez would create a big chance for the Titans, using his signature move of cutting in from the defender and taking a finesse shot, but the shot wasn’t enough as it glided into the gladiators gloves. 30 minutes into the half, Northwood offensive possession was often quiet in the half, yet outshined by the strong defense the Gladiators were showing. A crucial mistake from the Einstein defense led to the first points being added for the Gladiators. Einstein passed the ball up from the defense and was immediately pressured by #14 Biruk Yitayew, intercepting Einstein possession and scoring an easy shot past the goalkeeper, going up 1-0. Time drained out as Einstein's defense slowly crumbled, with the first half ending 1-0 Northwood lead. The second half kicked off with possession switching to be in favor of Northwood. A very close shot from the Titans almost tied the game one a piece. #13 Salas outran his defender and took a shot from the corner left side of the goal post, as the ball went just wide by inches of the goal. Einstein started to apply more pressure onto the Northwood attackers but the gladiators started showing more confidence within their shots, breaking past more defenders. The Titans would tie up the game from a ricotched from an Einstein player that allowed #11 Nathan Ramirez to take the Shot, tying the game 1-1. Einstein started to show signs of life, possessing the ball more often and keeping it even with Northwood. Intensity ramped up as both teams started to show more physical contact. With 5 minutes remaining in the half, Einstein had multiple close chances in hoping to get the winning goal, but Northwood continued to block key passes. Time drained as the end of regulation ended with a 1-1 score, heading to overtime. The first overtime period started Einstein moving it’s way towards northward territory with high pressure. Einstein goal keeper Jacob Wexler would have a key save from a long Northwood shot. The Titans would have two very close chances to win the game, missing critical dribbles and shots near Northwood territory. No goals were scored, as the first overtime period ended 1-1. The final period of overtime kicked off with the first yellow card of the game, given to Northwood, almost fooling the stadium for a Northwood Freekick near the box. Nail Biting moments continued within the period, with Northwood catching Wexler off guard and taking a shot that was inches from the crossbar. Northwood possessed the ball for 7 minutes into the period, with Einstein Defense standing tall and preventing any big chances. Neither team was able to score the game winner, having the result in a tie, 1-1.
On September 30, the Albert Einstein girl’s soccer team faced off the Richard Montgomery Rockets in a 1-0 victory. The game kicked off with early Rockets possessions onto Einstein's side of the field. Richard Montgomery entered the game as heavy favorites, only suffering one loss against Blair. The Rockets were looking to play aggressive pressure onto the Titans, knowing it was one of the Titan’s weaknesses. Three close calls were saved by the help of Einstein's Goalkeeper #1 Maya Garnett, reflecting two close crosses from the corner and a fingertip save from a distanced shot. 12 minutes into the first half, the Rockets continued to maintain possession, attempting multiple attacks but the Einstein defense stood strong. Both teams weren’t afraid to take long shots. Einstein took a far attempt from #2 Luisa Farole, taking a volley that was went wide of the goal. Richard Montgomery also attempted a 45-yard strike from a free kick, going wide and floating into the hands of Garnett, recording her fourth save of the first half. The pressure continued to ramp up from the Rockets, with miscommunication from the Titans almost giving the Rockets a very easy attempt on goal. #7 Adrianna Benevides turned on the jets and almost caught an Einstein defender off guard, with the defender clearing the ball away to prevent any chances given to the Rockets. Einstein started to show strong offensive momentum, creating key chances within Rockets territory. The game started to become a defensive show, with both teams refusing to give any attempted chance to take a shot on target. A freekick was given to the Rockets and attempted one final freekick as time drained out. The shot went wide from the 40-yard line and the first half remained leveled at 0-0. The second half kicked off with a goalkeeper change from the Titans, subbing Garnett for #0 Addie Burkes. Possession continued to be maintained in the Rockets favor, showing strong signs of speed in all out sprints for any chances created. The Rockets continued to out speed the Titans in keeping the ball in their territory. 11 minutes into the half, Einstein was first to add points to the scoreboard. #9 Annabelle O’Connor set a beautifully placed long through pass that allowed #20 Chase Tucker to beat her defenders and shoot past the goalkeeper, giving Einstein the first lead of the game, 1-0. Einstein’s defense was on fire, not allowing Richard Montgomery to keep the score leveled. Einstein breathe a sigh of relief, with a close call with a shot from #20 Allison Kelley from a far shot that hit the crossbar, almost bringing the score to 1-1. With 10 minutes remaining in the half, the Rockets maintained strong possession in Einstein territory. Tension continued to rise as the Rockets continued to pile up on long shots, attempting to catch Burkes off guard. Einstein continued to waste as much time as they could, clearing the ball as much as they could. Time slowly drained out and the Titans pulled the upset, claiming a 1-0 final score over the Rockets. Einstein moves up to 4-3 and will head on the road to play Northwood. Richard Montgomery is handed their second loss of the season, dropping to 5-2 and will play Rockville at home.
Photo courtesy of Tino Pham. Blair boys’ soccer has only played in one match so far this season that was decided by more than one goal — its 5-2 loss to Blake on Sept. 10. The rest have been one-goal games, and the rest have also been Blazer wins. This trend continued Saturday, as Blair eked out a 3-2 win over Einstein, a team that earned just its second loss of the season. Blair’s Myko Idiokitas controlled the Blazers’ back line, assuming duties on both free kicks and corner kicks, while also providing a stifling, containing presence in the center of the defense. The Titans had ample opportunities on free kicks in Blair territory, but the Blazers swiftly dealt them away, either with its goalkeeper stepping up to corral the kick, or via some solid blocks. After no scoring in the opening half of play, Blair opened the scoring 13 minutes into the second frame. An errant Titans pass that was attempted to be swung to the centerback was intercepted by Blair’s No. 11. Streaking down the sideline with a defender approaching, the Blazers had a 3-on-2 advantage deep in Einstein’s half of the field. No. 11 crossed the ball into the box on the ground, and Blair’s No. 9 did well to let the ball pass him, making the Titans’ defenders freeze for half a beat. The ball continued on the the center of the field, where Oscar Pinto Acosta got his boot on the ball, burying it in the bottom-right corner to give Blair the early 1-0 lead. But then it was the Titans that bounced back with a fury. Just three minutes after the Blazers’ score, Einstein found itself with a penalty kick opportunity and buried it right down the center of the net. With this newfound momentum and energy, it retook possession right after the ensuing kickoff. Working down the right sideline, a Titan winger made a quick turn in the corner before lofting a ball into the box. The ball bounced off the top of a Blair defender before careening to the back post. From there, a Titan striker was all alone to control the ball and drive it into the back of the net, giving Einstein a 2-1 lead with 28 minutes left. But the action wasn’t done just yet. Blair returned the favor 20 minutes later, with just under nine minutes left in the match. After already having had a penalty kick saved in the interim, Josue Reyes Rubio didn’t make another mistake. Instead, 15 yards out from the goal, he pinged a missile into the top-right corner of the goal under heavy pressure. The goalkeeper didn’t even have time to react. Then the dagger came in the 10-minute overtime period. A strike 12 yards out from the goal that snuck into the top-left corner of the goal sealed the deal halfway through the extra frame.
On September 25, the Albert Einstein Titans faced the Wheaton Knights in an intense DCC rival match that ended in a 5-1 defeat. The rivalry match started with high Wheaton momentum and kept the game onto Einstein’s side of the field. Five minutes in the first half, It wouldn’t take much longer for the first goal to be scored, scored by #9 Juliana Vega from a crossed pass and putting in the easy tap in, bringing the score to 1-0 with a Knights lead. Wheaton would add two more goals within 10 minutes of the first half, with a rebound shot from #5 Adrianna Rodriguez and save that bounced off the Titan’s Keeper hand and went to the right side of the net, scored by #3 Emma Torres. Wheaton had full momentum on a strong 3-0 lead over the Titans. Einstein couldn’t hold offensive possession, as Wheaton’s tactics focused on constantly pressuring the Titans and playing much more forward when maintaining possession, all gas no breaks. No big chances were created for the Titans, having 0 shots on target with 17 minutes remaining in the first. The deficit increased for the Titans, with a quick attack from a drawn foul from the Titans and a perfect lobbed pass for the Knights and scored by #3 Torres who chipped it over goalkeeper Maya Garnett. Wheaton looked to control the entire first half of the game, creating multiple key passes and showing a “tiki taka” presence. Wheaton walks away with a dominating 4-0 lead over Einstein at the end of the first half. The second half started with a goal keeper change for the Titans, putting in goalkeeper Addie Burkes. Einstein would reduce the deficit with the Titan’s first goal of the game, scored by #8 Angie Vojvodic. Vojvodic headed the ball in from a corner cross and brought the score to 4-1. Einstein started to show signs of possession for the first time of the game 10 minutes in the second half, improving much better than their performance in the first half but must show more shots on target to start comeback hopes. Two yellow cards were given to the Titans after strong collisions caused by #9 Annabelle O’Connor and captain #8 Angie Vojvodic. Wheaton started to increase their aggression once again, creating multiple big chances in Einstein territory. Einstein started to become too aggressive when defending, with two fouls that could’ve been yellow cards from purposeful pushing from the Titans. Wheaton seemingly put this game to rest with a tap in goal from #3 Torres, securing the hat-trick and bringing the game to 5-1. Time drained out in the game as Wheaton came out victorious with a 5-1 crushing win over the Titans. Torres secured player of the night with a total of 3 goals. Einstein will move down to 3-2 and will face Blair on the road. Wheaton will move up to 3-3 and will face Rockville at home.
Wheaton opened up the scoring when Frank Mebale scored on a breakaway and Isaac Martinez scored a beautiful direct kick. In the second half Felix Miranda scored on a penalty to make it 3-0.
