Glenelg girls’ lacrosse secured its first state title since 2018 with a 13-3 win over Queen Anne’s in the Class 2A championship game. The Gladiators coasted throughout the season, only dropping one game against Severna Park in early April. They ended the season on a 15-game win streak. At the beginning of each season, coach Alexander Pagnotta picks a motto for the team to live by. He heard assistant coach Anna Callahan tell the girls, “Hungry dogs run faster” and knew that would be it. “We turned into fierce, starving dogs on the field. We fought and battled for every ground ball, every draw, we cut at full speed, all of that was born out of hungry dogs fun faster,” coach Pagnotta said. Glenelg controlled the game from start to finish and took an 8-2 lead into the half-time break. The defense, led by seniors Lara Hoefich and Ava Rivera, as well as juniors CeCe Cassity and Reilly Kelleher, stepped up in the second half to help secure the championship. Seniors Kamryn Henson and Maggie Metz took over offensively, scoring three goals each for the Gladiators. Along with producing on the field, the seniors molded the team together. “Talent is so important, and we definitely had that, but so is culture and the chemistry of the team,” said coach Pagnotta. Glenelg will have to replace production on the offensive end after graduating 10 seniors, but coach Pagnotta is confident in his team heading into next season. “We have a young team. We have some really big shoes to fill and see what happens on our leadership side. I think it’s a good nucleus coming back, and we’ll see how that chemistry comes together.” Howard County Player of the Year Kamryn Henson is headed to Virgnia Tech to play lacrosse for the Hokies. Lara Hoeflich will continue her lacrosse career at Delaware.
