The Westminster High School Girls Lacrosse enters this season with something to prove—and plenty of reason for confidence. After a postseason run that fell short of expectations last year, the Owls are turning that disappointment into motivation as they look to start the new campaign on the right note. One of the biggest strengths for Westminster this season is experience. The roster is packed with returning players who saw meaningful minutes a year ago, giving the team a level of chemistry and understanding that can’t be taught overnight. From the midfield to the defensive end, the continuity allows the Owls to play faster, communicate better, and trust one another in high-pressure moments. That familiarity could be a key factor early in the season as they aim to build momentum right away. Last season ended sooner than the team had hoped, leaving a lingering sense of unfinished business. The early postseason exit wasn’t just a loss—it was a learning moment. Throughout the offseason, players have used that experience as fuel, focusing on improving fundamentals, conditioning, and mental toughness. There’s a clear sense that this group doesn’t just want to return to the playoffs—they want to make a deeper, more meaningful run. Leadership will also play a major role in Westminster’s success. With so many returners, the team benefits from athletes who understand the demands of a full season and the intensity of playoff lacrosse. Those veterans set the tone in practice and games alike, helping guide younger players while keeping the team locked in on its goals. As the season begins, all eyes will be on how quickly the Owls can put it all together. A strong start could set the tone for everything that follows, especially in a competitive schedule where every game matters. With experience, motivation, and a chip on their shoulder, Westminster is poised to make noise early. If the Owls can channel last year’s disappointment into consistent, focused play, this could be the season where everything clicks. And if that happens, don’t be surprised to see Westminster not only return to the postseason but go much further than before.

Marriotts Ridge Girls’ Lacrosse looked doomed on March 25. A 14-9 loss to Severna Park followed a season-opening 10-9 defeat to rival Glenelg High School. The defense struggled and playoff dreams appeared over before they could begin. Marriotts Ridge had not won either of their first two games for the first time since 2014. They began that season with two ties against Atholton and River Hill. Rebounding from the worst start in over a decade provided slim odds of success. Head Coach Amanda Brady spoke with CSZ Network about the team’s mindset after a disappointing start. “Girls were bought-in all season. They didn’t think twice about being 0-2. They knew both opponents were quality and they knew we were quality. We continued to step up with confidence,” Brady said. A sharpened defense turned the season around for the Mustangs. After opening the year by allowing double-digit goals in both games, Marriotts Ridge held opponents to fewer than 10 goals in 14 of their following 18 games, including the playoffs. The Mustangs did not lose any of those 14 games. The team also made steps forward with their road performance. Across 2023 and 2024, road matchups became a team kryptonite, accounting for all six regular-season losses in those two seasons. The Mustangs won five games on the road during the regular season, the most since 2022. Finishing with a 9-4-1 record earned them a playoff berth and the Mustangs knew that a rematch with Severna Park could be in play. Brady explained how Marriotts Ridge transferred regular-season success into playoff consistency. “We repped defensive clears pretty regularly leading into the playoffs and worked hard on our footwork, knowing we’d potentially see their powerful midfield again — they’re so fast. The footwork we focused on paid off because our [midfielders] and defenders did an excellent job,” Brady said. Marriotts Ridge posted a +53 goal differential in the playoffs, winning four of their six games by more than five goals. They flipped the script in close games, winning two one-goal games after going 0-2 during the season. On May 21, Marriotts Ridge faced Severna Park in the MPSSAA Class 3A Girls Lacrosse State Championship. The Mustangs fell behind early after a goal in the first 15 seconds of play, but rallied back, just as they did during the year, to pull off a thrilling 11-10 comeback win. Their defense showed up late with a shutdown fourth quarter that proved critical. Sports Illustrated began a weekly ranking for DMV Girls’ Lacrosse programs at the beginning of the 2025 season. They placed Marriotts Ridge 19th after the first game of the season. Their .777 winning percentage and playoff run in 2024 sat behind schools with sub-500 records and unachieved playoff berths. The Mustangs boosted their standing more than any other program, jumping from 19th to 11th between the beginning and end of the season. They spent 10 of the season’s 11 weeks in 19th or lower, even with a 9-2-1 stretch in the middle of the season. The Mustangs surged in the season’s final two weeks. After being cut from the top 25 on April 28, Marriotts Ridge placed 24th on May 19 and surged 13 spots to end the year. No program rose that many spots throughout the season or between weeks. Marriotts Ridge is one of two schools, alongside St. Mary’s, to join the top 15 after opening the year on the outside. Brady shared that the team tuned out the rankings and focused on the games themselves. She reflected on the season’s journey. “I knew by the end of the season people would start to know our name — it just took all of us to do it,” Brady said.

🥍 🥍 ROAD TO STEVENSON
MPSSAA 3A GIRLS LAX CHAMPIONSHIP
Severna Park vs Marriotts Ridge

The lacrosse factory of Anne Arundel County, Severna Park Falcons (who possess several state titles), battle at Mustang Stadium Howard County’s own, the Marriotts Ridge Mustangs. The stage was set for a lacrosse banger. And that’s just what it was.

Both teams came out firing but the Ridge gained a little lead before the Falcons were able to tie it up at the half. And the second half was similar only this time Severna Park took the lead. However, the Mustangs were able to answer back and took a 1pt lead late in the 4th. BIG SHOUTS to the Severna Park FALCONS, proud of the success you ladies achieved this season. BIG UP AND CONGRATS to the State Champs, Marriotts Ridge MUSTANGS. Proud of you ladies. You played with resilience!!! Enjoy the championship victory. Game Highlights at YT link below.

From the first whistle to the last, today's state championship game was a battle. Both teams played tremendously, consistently answering to one another's attacks. Until today, the Severna Park Falcons girls lacrosse team was 17-2, wow! This year they have been led by captains Erin Hussey, Bella Van Gieson, Payton Jeffers, Maria Bragg, and Avery Saviano. Junior, Maria Bragg (#12) kept the Falcons in the game towards the end of the first half and into the second with three consecutive goals. Bragg has committed to the University of Florida to continue her lacrosse career at the college level. Severna Park maintained a very fast-paced game, Ava Deegan (#9) scored the Falcons first goal just 12 seconds after the draw was initiated. The Falcons are loaded with players committed to play lacrosse in college and should be proud of the legacy they have preserved at Severna Park. At the end of the third quarter the score was 8-10. Meaning, the Marriotts Ridge Mustangs went the whole fourth quarter without letting Severna Park score. Freshman goalie, Shannen Krozy (#21) had a stellar performance in goal, denying many of Severna Park’s scoring opportunities. In total there were 4 yellow cards, 3 against Severna Park and just 1 against Marriotts Ridge. The Mustangs were able to capitalize each time they were woman-up on the field. Clare Jenkins (#9) did a notable job clearing the ball from the defensive end in transition. The 6 different players that scored today for the Mustangs were Jenna Cratin, Hayden Baumgartner, Sedona Kaplan, Sophia McGinnis, Allison Custer, and Katie Leader. Congrats Mustangs!

After a hard fought game against the Magruder Colonels, the Wootton Girls Lacrosse Team emerges victorious. Last year, the team had won regionals for the first time ever and were able to successfully defend the title this time with a 12-7 win. The Patriots were man-down for 9 minutes at the end of the game due to four yellow cards, yet still managed to secure the win. They look forward to who they might play in their next game at states. Congratulations!
