Sherwood Wins Scrimmage Match At Northwest 21-3 8/28/2026 Sherwood continues to show off its raw talent as it nears its first game of the season at Magruder High School.

On December 4, the Sherwood Warriors faced off against the Mervo Mustangs in the 4A/3A MPSSAA state championships, with the Mustangs claiming the state title in a 40-20 victory. The game kicked off with the Warriors electing to receive the ball first in this tight championship matchup. Sherwood focused early on running plays on the first drive, but was forced to punt after the Mervo defense held. Quarterback #5 Jaylen Solomon rushed outside the pocket and searched to find a man downfield, barely avoiding the Gladiators' pressure. The Mustangs put the first points on the board after a 25-yard touchdown to #81 Dennis Perry. The Mustangs went for two and quickly succeeded. Sherwood would be forced to punt for a second time with the first quarter ending 7-0, back in Mustang possession. Mervo opened the second quarter by moving up to Sherwood’s 4-yard line and adding to the lead with a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Solomon, putting the score to 14-0 with 7:49 remaining. Sherwood needed to match the energy the Mustangs were giving, but couldn’t do so, going 3-and-out for the third time straight, punting once more. Solomon’s rushing speed was the X-factor 7 minutes into the quarter, where Sherwood allowed too many openings for Solomon's rushing ability to shine. More fuel was added to the fire, with Mervo going up 22-0 with a minute left in the half, scored by #1 Tywon Baker on an 11-yard post route receiving touchdown. The first half ended with a 22-0 dominant Mervo lead. The second half kicked off with turnover madness, where Sherwood stripped the ball out of Mervo’s running back #3 Kaden Foster, recovering the ball and gaining possession. It only took seconds for Mervo to pick off Sherwood from #22 Tyler Ford, but Sherwood was able to bring out Mervo’s punting unit for the first time of the game. Minutes later, Mervo recovered a stripped ball on Sherwood, picked up by #9 Brian Guerrero. With 6:01 left in the half, Solomon recorded a hat-trick of rushing touchdowns with a 4-yard rushing score, bringing the deficit to 28-0. Sherwood was starting to show signs of life, moving up to the Mervo 19-yard line and recording its first touchdown of the game, a 19-yard passing touchdown to #5 Tommy Hanrahan. Sherwood cut the lead down to 28-6. With 7 seconds left in the quarter, Solomon was picked off a screen pass by Sherwood defender #24 Jayden Sellman. A 50-yard return was stopped at Mervos' 3-yard line. A fumble almost handed Mervo the ball once again, but the Sherwood offense recovered. The third quarter ended 28-6 with Sherwood in possession. At the start of the fourth quarter, a one-handed catch from #0 Jefferson Serkem allowed the Gladiators their second touchdown of the game. The 2-point attempt was no good, and the score was shortened to 28-12. Momentum started to shift towards Sherwood after Solomon lost the ball on a scramble, giving Sherwood the ball back in hopes of a comeback. Sherwood moved the ball downfield to Mervo’s 2-yard line for a 41-yard gain. The lead turned into a one-score game as Sherwood cut the lead from a two-yard rushing touchdown and completed the two-point attempt. The score turned 28-20 with a one-possession game. Solomon set the standard straight, breaking multiple tackles and scoring a 32-yard rushing touchdown to prevent any comeback hopes for the gladiators. The lead grew up to 14 with a 34-20 score. Sherwood gained possession of the ball again and was forced to run a play on 4th and 1. The gladiators were just short ruled by the chain team and gave Mervo the ball at Sherwood’s 30-yard line. Mervo set the dagger into the game, scoring a 22-yard rushing touchdown and bringing the score to 40-20. Time remaining hit 0 as the Mervo Mustangs finished the game as state champions, coming victorious at 40-20.

The regional football playoffs are well underway in Maryland, and while that opens up the field beyond just Montgomery County, it was two Montgomery County programs that found themselves toe-to-toe with one another in the second round of the 4A bracket. The contest concluded with the Bulldogs ultimately getting the best of the Rockets in a beatdown, 35-17, Friday night. It was Richard Montgomery that got things started, as Gerard Woods Jr. pounded it up the middle for a 2-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead. And then the Rockets compounded their success. Looking for a complete drive and subsequent response, Churchill quarterback Hunter Humphries telegraphed his throw to the flat. Cornerback Isisah Womack jumped in front of the pass, taking it all the way back for a score and giving the Rockets a 14-0 lead. However, that was about as much success as Richard Montgomery would have on the evening. Humphries was composed on the following drive, with play-action fakes and rollouts that allowed him easy tosses over the middle of the field. But it was running back Noah Zhang that finished the drive strong for the Bulldogs, churning his legs up the middle for a 6-yard score. A Richard Montgomery field goal with less than 10 minutes to play in the second quarter would end up being its final points of the day. Still, Churchill needed to find a way to erase the 10-point deficit. It came rather quickly. The Bulldogs could not have been quicker in responding to the field goal, marching down the field. Humphries then fooled the entire defense, faking a handoff to Zhang and keeping it himself, bumping off defenders for a 15-yard touchdown run. Minutes into the third quarter, it was Zhang who struck again. With Churchill’s fullback leading the way, Zhang went into the end zone nearly untouched, and the Bulldogs finally got their first lead of the evening, 21-17. And unlike Churchill had done over the previous two quarters, the Rockets failed to muster a response. It went the entire third quarter without a significant offensive push, and it wasn’t until the 9-minute mark of the following quarter that a team scored. But that team was Churchill, extending its lead. Humphries immediately diagnosed that his receiver beat man coverage on a streak on the left side of the field, lofting it up into the end zone for an easily caught, 27-yard touchdown. And up 11 with three minutes remaining, it was — who else — Zhang that added insurance to the already-11-point lead, breaking through a gang of tacklers for a 52-yard rushing touchdown. With the win, the Bulldogs now face undefeated powerhouse Quince Orchard.

The Sherwood Warriors had a big win over The Richard Montgomery Rockets on thursday night! Sherwood's defense was just too powerful for RM to handle. It was a much-heralded matchup against undefeated Sherwood, marking a hotly-contested game consisting of two unbeaten teams. But the Cougars got the upper hand early. Despite some occasional early pressure and a sack from the Warriors, Quince Orchard Will Drakeford operated relatively cleanly from the pocket. This was emphasized in his two touchdown tosses to a favorite target of his, tight end Diego Rodriguez. But the barrage didn’t stop there. The Cougars’ special teams play also got the best of Sherwood early, as Rico Jackson ran back a kickoff for six. By the third quarter, Quince Orchard led 21-0, and it appeared as though the powerhouse would steamroll to another relaxing victory. Until it didn’t. Sherwood quarterback Matthew Larsen suddenly got the hot hand. With just under four minutes left in the third frame, he uncorked a deep ball to the left side of the field, hitting his receiver in stride for a 46-yard touchdown. Then, to start the fourth quarter, a play-action fake opened up the middle of the field, and Larsen hit his man in stride for a 59-yard score. The game was starting to unravel at the seams for Quince Orchard. And it all came to a head just a minute later on Sherwood’s stellar game-tying drive, which featured an 18-yard pass, 12-yard run and 25-yard opposite field dish for a touchdown. And with eight minutes left, the score was knotted. On the ensuing drive, Quince Orchard’s rushing attack took command, with multiple slices up the middle chewing both yardage and clock. Jaheim Bond ultimately broke free approaching five minutes left in the game, taking a carry with multiple Sherwood defenders on his back and dragging them down deep in the red zone. He punched it in just one play later, nearly untouched. Searching for a response, Larsen instead threw an interception that was returned all the way back to Sherwood’s 15-yard line. And much like last time, it took just one more play for the Cougars to punch it in — J.J. Williams was the recipient of this handoff. Sherwood tacked on one more score to end the contest, but it didn’t have much time to do much else with less than two minutes on the clock, leaving Quince Orchard perfect on the season.

This attacking barrage reared its head once more Friday, as the Warriors took down Rockville in dominant fashion, 49-0. Sherwood is now 3-0 on the season. It wasn’t long until Sherwood found their groove. On its first drive of the evening, quarterback Matthew Larsen lofted a 21-yard pass into Ram territory, setting the Warriors up for a red zone opportunity just minutes into the contest. Just plays later, the first score of the game came courtesy of Rocky ***, who found a soft spot in the zone with Larsen rolling out to his right. But the 14-yard touchdown was just the beginning of the onslaught. Sherwood didn’t always need deep, go-route passes to gain yards, instead leaning on short strikes — a 31-yard screen set up the Warriors in the red zone on their very next possession. The drive was promptly capped off with a similar concept on the opposite side of the field for a 13-yard score. *** continued his stellar evening later on a 40-yard reception, taking a bump after reeling the pass in on a go-route and plowing in for the score. His reception put Sherwood up 28-0 in just the second frame, effectively putting things out of reach. Rockville needed a response, and quickly, if it wanted to salvage the contest before halftime. But things went in the opposite direction. Adrian Hamilton read the Rams’ quarterback perfectly, executing a sideline-stepping pick-six to put the Warriors up by five scores. But there was still time to play in the second quarter, and Sherwood utilized the time to its advantage, with Caleb Hollowell taking a quick-hit pass 14 yards in for the score. A 1-yard touchdown rush late in the contest wrapped up what was a comprehensive, well-rounded performance from both sides of the ball for Sherwood. It will next take on Blake this Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Warriors took down the Bengals, who are also currently 3-0, 24-0 last year — this time around could serve as a much more competitive skirmish.
