Photo credit to Sparrows Point High School student photographer Ashlyn Freal, on Instagram @ashlynfrealphoto In 2024, no Baltimore County field hockey team made it farther than Sparrows Point, as the Pointers were the seventh seed in the entire 1A class with a 5-6 regular season record. The Pointers cruised through the regional playoffs, defeating Carver at home and Pikesville on the road with a combined score of 8-0. Sparrows Point matched up against the Fallston Cougars, to whom they fell in double overtime during the regular season, in the first round of the state playoffs. The result of their second meeting of the season was significantly different, as the Cougars took down Sparrows Point 4-0. Sparrows Point’s head coach, Shannon Fenwick, attributed the loss to a plethora of injuries that mainly weakened their offensive line. Throughout the offseason, Fenwick’s athletes remain involved in sports, with the majority competing in field hockey during the spring. Starting in July, Fenwick began hosting clinics with returning athletes, leading up to tryouts beginning in mid-August. “It is basically a practice, but geared more toward getting back into the field hockey groove,” Coach Fenwick described. The Pointers went into tryouts after losing seven seniors from the 2024 team. With the losses, Sparrows Point has a significantly younger team than most others from throughout the county. “We are a young team, especially on the attack… six out of 11 players on my attack are sophomores,” Fenwick explained. By the end of tryouts, the team had nominated three athletes, seniors Allie Roberts and Arianna Perry, as well as junior Peyton Carling, to be the team’s captains for the fall season. Throughout practices leading up to their first game, freshman Caroline Weaver excelled in the goal, earning her a spot on varsity in her first year at the school. Weaver remains the only freshman currently on the varsity team. In the Pointers’ first three games, all of which were played at home against Towson, Carver, and Pikesville, the team outscored its opponents by a combined 15-3, including a 6-0 win over the Panthers. Through three games, sophomore Khloe Nelson, the team’s current leading scorer, explained that she was thrilled with how the early part of the season went. “It feels really good to be able to contribute to the team, especially as a sophomore… We have stayed strong and [we keep] fighting together,” she said. After the 3-0 start, Sparrows Point dropped four of its next five games, which included a third consecutive loss against Fallston, as well as tough games against Hereford, Dulaney, and Towson. Coach Fenwick saw that her team was going through a very rough patch. “Our corners were falling apart, our fundamentals were not there, and we started to come apart internally between the team,” she said. Following the 3-0 loss to Towson, the athletes knew that something needed to change. In the first practice after the Towson game, “They finally realized that we are good, but work better as a cohesive team… it was like we had a new team. They were fired up and went 110% to get not only themselves to be better, but the entire team.” With two games left in the season, a road match against C. Milton Wright and a home game against Franklin, Arianna Perry understands how momentous the next week will be. “This season so far has been tough but solid… I have worked hard to contribute to the team’s scoring and creating opportunities on the field… As for the rest of the season, I want to keep improving my skills and help lead the team to as many wins as possible,” she explained. Caroline Weaver, who has 85 saves in nine games for the Pointers, plans to “be more vocal and be seen as a leader on the team, and to help the team play at a high intensity for all four quarters.” Aside from her captains and her goalie, Coach Fenwick credits the success throughout the season to several other athletes on the team. Senior Jaslyn Nida has been half of an incredible dynamic duo, along with captain Allie Roberts. The two athletes “have been playing back there together since their sophomore season. They don’t even have to speak to each other to know what the other is thinking,” Fenwick explained. Additionally, junior Gianna Fritz and sophomore Analise Shifflett have both excelled in high-stakes situations while bringing aggressive energy to the team throughout every game.

Audrey Baugher had a hat trick for the Eagles. Lily Bertier had two assists and Bella Mazan had the other assist. Eden Roth had five saves in goal.
