The Baltimore County football regular season kicked off with over a dozen games being played on Friday alone. In a rematch from week nine of last season, the Pikesville Panthers traveled to the eastern side of the county to take on the Patapsco Patriots. Last season, Pikesville took on Patterson Mill in the first round of the playoffs, losing 67-28 in a blowout. Patapsco was eliminated in the first round as well, losing 32-14 against the regional runner-up, New Town. In the preseason, the Patriots participated in a jamboree against teams from Baltimore, Carroll, and Harford counties, while the Panthers played one scrimmage game, taking down Boonsboro on the road with a 17-14 final. The Patriots' offense struck first in the first half, with junior Sean Grearna running into the end zone from just three yards out. That touchdown was one of just two attempts Grearna had in the game, with the second resulting in a fumble. Patapsco’s defense dominated the game for the first three and a half quarters, not conceding a point for the first three quarters. In their last drive of the game, Pikesville ran twenty plays on offense (out of forty-three total in the game), scoring their first points of the season on a two-yard rushing touchdown by Elijah Dunn. Down 7-6 with the clock quickly winding down, Coach Michael Bradley Jr. decided to attempt the two-point conversion. Quarterback Karson Pringle was looking for Kairee White-Williams in the end zone, but the ball was intercepted by junior Jordyn Ridgel, and the Patriots won this game with a final score of 7-6. For the Patriots, junior quarterback Wyatt Perry led the team, going 12/15 through the air, throwing for 176 yards while rushing for twenty-eight more. Connor LeChez was the leading rusher for Patapsco, gaining fifty yards on eighteen attempts, while Nick Adkins was the leading receiver, accumulating 93 receiving yards on five catches. Defensive coordinator Mark Luggenbeel explained that “The players and coaching staff were not pleased with [the] scoreboard,” but head coach Tyler Clough reminded his players that “only we can beat us this year. If we do our jobs right, the outcome will speak for itself.” Pikesville mustered just ninety-eight total yards of offense throughout the game. According to Coach Luggenbeel, the Patriots have already moved their focus to their week two rivalry matchup against Sparrows Point, who are coming off a 14-6 win at home against Lansdowne. The Panthers move on to their match-up at home against Eastern Tech, with both teams searching for their first victory of the season.

Havre de Grace High defeated Patapsco, 59-23, on Monday as SaBree Knox scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Havre de Grace High dominated from start to finish, never trailing in the game and leading by as many as 36 points at , on their way to a victory. Leading 13-6, Havre de Grace High went on a 23-point run to pull further away. Havre de Grace High had a strong first half, leading 36-6 at halftime and never looked back, securing the victory. Havre de Grace High bested Patapsco 16-0 in the second quarter, their strongest of the game. Havre de Grace High shot well from distance, going 6-15 from three. Havre de Grace High controlled the paint, grabbing 45 rebounds. SaBree Knox led the team with 15 rebounds. SaBree Knox knocked down three shots from beyond the arc for Havre de Grace High. Havre de Grace High passed the ball well with 11 assists on 25 made baskets. Nat Burton led the team with five assists. Havre de Grace High swiped 25 steals in the game. Savannah Lawrence led the team with six steals. Mia Thompson (11 points), Nat Burton (7 points), Mercy Koranteng (6 points), Savannah Lawrence (4 points), Roxie Schmitt (3 points), Rylie (3 points), and Alyson Gonzalez (2 points) helped out Havre de Grace High as well. Next up for Havre de Grace High is a game at Patterson Mill High on Tuesday.

Cross country teams from across the county traveled to the Center for Maryland Agriculture for the county championship on October 18. Three seniors took the top three spots with Hereford's Sylvia Snider finishing in first wtih 20:04.82, Alexandra Lohse from Towson in second with 20:29.08, and Towson's Cecilia Van Lierop coming in third with 20:39.88. The Towson Generals took first place overall with 28 points, followed by the Hereford Bulls in second with 41 and the Dulaney Lions in third with 73. Teams from across Baltimore County traveled to the Center for Maryland Agriculture on October 18th for the county championship. In the men's 5K, Theodore Brown, a senior from Towson, took first place finishing in 16:47.21. Second place went to junior Oliver Katz from Dulaney with a time of 17:02.35. The bronze medal went to another Towson senior, John Fields, finishing in 17:10.96. The Towson Generals took first place with 31, followed by the Catonsville Comets with 61, and the Dulaney Lions with 63. On October 9th, Pikesville hosted teams from around the county in a cross country meet. In the 5k, the top three spots all went to runners from GW Carver with Junior Maren Blanks in 1st (22:13.95), Sophomore Anna Bibo in 2nd (22:50.69), and Junior Mia Hager in 3rd (24:37.89). GW Carver took first overall with 29 points, Hereford came in second with 38. and Sparrows took bronze with 54. Seven boys' teams from throughout the county traveled to Pikesville High School for a cross country meet on October 9th. In first place was Pikesville sophomore Eitan Beck with a time of 18:45.38, second place went to Loch Raven's senior Alexander Wanjiku finishing in 18:57.75. while bronze was claimed by another Loch Raven senior, John Wohlgemuth, crossing the finish line after 19:01.28. Chesapeake High School. The meet finished with Pikesville in 1st, Carver in 2nd, and Loch Raven in 3rd. The Baltimore Museum of Industry is looking to collect any materials or artifacts related to the fallen Francis Scott Key Bridge. Along with shortening travel times, the Key Bridge provided opportunities for students from different backgrounds to interact with each other through sports. As the next generation of student athletes come into schools like Dundalk and Patapsco, it will be important to remember the impact the bridge had and the work that will be done to build it once. This effort will be needed to build it once again. The museum will surely find remnants of trips from big wins, and stories of meeting lifelong friends or opponents across the bridge. As recovery efforts continue, CSZ hopes these stories will be in the workers’ minds as they rebuild as quickly and as safely as possible.
