Teams from throughout the county converged on New Town High School last Tuesday to compete in the Baltimore County cheerleading competition, looking to punch a ticket to the regional round. Here's how each county team did: 1A: Sparrows Point was far above their county competition in the 1A class, scoring a 111.25, which puts them 5.05 points ahead of second place in the 1A East, as Havre de Grace scored 106.2. Pikesville was right behind finishing with a 102.3, good enough for fifth in the west, with breathing room between Boonsboro in 4th and Carver in 6th. The Wildcats narrowly avoided elimination in their region, scoring a 95.7, which sends them to Howard Community College as the only other team from the 1A West. Western Tech, Owings Mills, and Randallstown all competed as schools from the west, but their respective scores of 90.05, 83.8, and 79.15 were not good enough to advance. From the east side, Loch Raven was the eighth team, scoring 70.9 placing them eighth, but with Elkton High not competing next week, they will move forward as the seventh team. 2A: Just two 2A schools will be moving on to the next round, both coming from the west side. Hereford took home the county championship, finishing with a 113.45, closely followed by Eastern Tech at 111.65. The two schools will be moving onto regionals in second and third place, respectively. Lansdowne's score of 94.6 and Chesapeake's 92.6 placed them at ninth and tenth in the county, which is not high enough to move on. 3A: The Franklin Indians edged out Bel Air for the fourth seed in the 3A East, scoring a 111.4. New Town is the only other 3A team advancing from BCPS, scoring 105.9 and earning them the seventh and final spot. Patapsco, Overlea, Milford Mill, and Towson also competed, but none scored high enough to advance. The Patriots finished in eighth, scoring 99.5, the Falcons in seventh with 96.65, the Millers in eleventh with 88.9, and the Generals in twelfth with 67.65. 4A: BCPS teams make up four of the seven teams from the largest class moving on. Perry Hall took home the county championship with a 112.0, which puts them atop the East. Kenwood is close behind, as their 109.45 has them in third. Dulaney's 102.65 and Parkville's 99.55 were also good enough for both to advance as the fifth and sixth seeds. Woodlawn scored 94.7 and finished in eighth, Catonsville in tenth with 88.4 and Dundalk in eleventh at 78.8 round out the county. The regional competition is slated to take place at Howard Community College next week with the East Region competing on Tuesday and the West on Wednesday, both competitions will start at 6 p.m.

Last week, BCPS teams met at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Downtown Baltimore for the indoor track and field county competition. This article will highlight the top three finishers in each track event as well as the field events. As overall teams, Hereford placed first with 87 total points, followed by Dulaney with 60 and Towson with 40. Congratulations to Hereford for their county championship, but here are the top three finishers in each result from the county competition: Individual Events: 55 Meter: Towson senior Bronte Morton took home gold, finishing in 6.53 seconds, followed by Kenwood junior Myles Venable at 6.56 and Overlea senior Davon Shell at 6.58. 300 Meter: Hereford senior Ben Wheeler finished at the top of the podium in 36.83 seconds, followed by Morton in 37.3 and Venable at 37.67. 500 Meter: Wheeler also took home the top spot here, finishing in 1:08.48, followed by Parkville senior Jay Williams at 1:09.82, and Julian Prioleau from Franklin at 1:11.4. 800 Meter: Hereford sent another athlete to the top of this podium in sophomore Eli Aitken, who finished in 2:03.33, ahead of Franklin junior Zane Wehya at 2:04.87 and Towson junior Jack Dobrosielski at 2:05.72. 1600 Meter: Aitken took home his second gold medal, finishing this event in 4:41.84. Dulaney sophomore Luke Sales was just a bit behind in the silver medal spot at 4:45.69, and Catonsville sophomore Matthew Foster took home bronze in 4:47.32. 3200 Meter: Eli Aitken won his second long distance event and third overall, finishing in 10:05.47, followed by Carver senior Ian Pawluczkowycz in 10:09.29, with Dulaney junior Chris Martin in third, finishing in 10:14.22. 55 Meter Hurdles: Dundalk junior Brandon Brown took home the team's only gold medal, finishing in 8.07 seconds, closely followed by Eastern Tech's Malikai Sheriff in 8.11, and Overlea junior Isaiah Megginson at 8.37. Team Events: 4x200 Meter Relay: Milford Mill's team PR'd with a 1:36.35 finish on a team consisting of Damari Jackson, Samari Jackson, Cory Wheatley, and Amauri Patterson. Hereford came right behind with a PR of their own, set by Mykai Branch, Cameron Shinavar, Brad Chelden, and Ben Wheeler, with a time of 1:38.78. Dundalk's team brought home bronze, with Malachi Grooms, Darryl Reid, Ne'Shaun McCrae-Lee, and Mark Andrews finishing the event in 1:39.21 4x400 Meter Relay: Milford Mill won their second relay of the day, with Damari and Samari Jackson, Cory Wheatley, and Dante Brown finishing in 3:39.92, closely followed by Randallstown's team consisting of Jahlil Hopkins, Caleb Kehinde, Christopher Williams, and Jaeden Viera just six hundredths of a second behind at 3:39.98. Dulaney's Steven Ijeomah, Ethan Sappe, Michael Ijeomah, and Raymond Johnson came in third, finishing in 3:48.2 4x800 Meter Relay: This relay served as Dulaney's only team win, as their squad consisting of Jeff Ackerman, Michael and Steven Ijeomah, and Ethan Sappe finished in first in 8:41.9. Hereford's team made up of Nate Berkowitz, Kayvon Etesamypour, Matthew Lowing, and James Wyatt finished in 8:54.82, while Parkville took home bronze, as Odunayo Omolafe, Mor Fame, Jayvien Fayall, and Javon Shipley rounded out the top three in 9:03.2. Field Events: Shot Put: Mason Triplin, a senior from Dundalk, took home gold, throwing 52' 5.75" in his final indoor county competition. He was followed up by Dulaney's Jeremiah Dailey, at 49'1", and John Jachens from Catonsville, who threw 48'6" High Jump: Sparrows Point senior Sincere Noble won the event, reaching 6'2", followed by Carver's Benjamin Arneklev at 6'. Nujeeb Waheed at Overlea, Parkville's Donte Jacobs and Rommel Marquez Jr, and Milford Mill's Malik Samms, all hit 5'10", with Waheed and Jacobs tying for the bronze spot. Pole Vault: Richard Wang from Hereford took home gold, vaulting a personal best 12'3", as Loch Raven's Henry Kowal, Hereford's Corban Jones, and Dundalk's Ne'Shaun McCrae-Lee all reaching a max of 11', with Kowal and Jones taking silver and bronze.

Last Monday, Loch Raven senior guard John Artis III scored his 1,000th point on the road in the Raiders win over the Carver Wildcats. The basket came with just 40.6 remaining in the first half, on a play where Artis drove from the wing into the paint, before shooting off the backboard while getting fouled. The basket gave the Raiders a 32-11 lead, prompting a timeout for a brief celebration on the sideline. Loch Raven went on to defeat Carver with a final score of 75-29. This season marked a return to Loch Raven for Artis, after transferring to New Hope Academy in Baltimore for his junior season. In his senior campaign, Artis ranks among the top scorers in Baltimore County, averaging 21.7 points per game according to head coach Brandon Thomas. As a sophomore, Coach Thomas described Artis as a younger and quieter athlete, but challenged him to come out of his shell this season. “I was looking for John to become more of a leader and to be more vocal” Coach Thomas explained. Artis is garnering interest from several collegiate programs. The top of his list includes schools such as St. Mary’s College of Maryland in Southern Maryland, Stevenson University in Baltimore County, Bowie State University in Prince George’s County, as well as several other junior college programs. With his sights set on playing at the next level, Artis has been an integral part in the success of the Loch Raven program throughout this season. Coach Thomas described him as a “true leader”, citing his lead-by-example attitude, assisting on both sides of the ball while picking his teammates up when needed. The Raiders have put together an extraordinary season this winter. After a five point loss in the regional championship last season, Loch Raven currently sits at 8-5. After a 1-5 stretch from the middle of December to earlier this month, the team is currently riding a four-game win streak, including three consecutive road wins against Carver, Sparrows Point, and Patapsco. With just eight games remaining in the regular season, Coach Thomas is simply hoping for Artis, as well as the rest of the team, to remain consistent. After losing seven seniors from last year’s squad, he believes that the current team has reestablished their culture and a real defensive mind. Thomas also explained that it has been rewarding to see the team put everything together, and seeing the results pay off on the court. Loch Raven will head home for a home game this Friday against the 8-3 Overlea Falcons, before two more home matches next week against Kenwood on Wednesday, and Parkville on Friday.

In the first week back from winter break, multiple Baltimore County girls basketball teams had at least two games, leading to plenty of incredible results from the week’s slate. Historic blowouts and close matches led the way in the five games of the week from January 5-9: Loch Raven: 74, Chesapeake: 6 The biggest blowout of the week belongs to Loch Raven, as the Raiders took down the Chesapeake Bayhawks in a 68-point win. The Raiders missed three shots in the first 30 seconds of the game, but a steal from senior Kensley Marcus led to freshman Kennadi Cloude scoring the game’s first points. From there, the team went on a twenty-point run before Chesapeake scored their first points of the game. Chesapeake’s final points of the game came on a lay-up just over halfway through the second quarter, as the Raiders went on a 34-point run in the contest’s final twenty minutes. Kensley Marcus led the scoring for Loch Raven, contributing 24 points in fifteen minutes, with Jadyn Williams adding eighteen and Jadon Conteh ten. Dulaney: 62, Lansdowne: 11 The Lions followed up a 45-point win over Randallstown with another blowout at home against Lansdowne. After several shots by both teams, Dulaney drained the game’s first points on a contested layup, and the team ran away with the game from there. The Lions continued a 10-3 run throughout the first quarter, and by halftime, the team led 34-9. The Vikings scored just two points in the second half, while giving up 28. By the end of the game, Lansdowne logged their biggest loss of the season, falling by 51 points. The Vikings’ leading scorer was senior Piper Graham, who contributed three points. Sparrows Point: 36, Carver: 32 The Wildcats traveled to the eastside of the county to take on the Pointers in what proved to be one of the lowest scoring matchups of the week. Carver clung to a narrow 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but their offense faltered in the second, scoring just four while the defense allowed eleven. In the third, neither team scored double digit points, but Sparrows Point had taken a four-point lead going into the final eight minutes. With both teams tacking on eleven in the final quarter, the Pointers held a 36-32 victory. For a team with a majority of underclassmen, junior Elisah Guity led the scoring for Carver, contributing nineteen with eleven total rebounds as well. Milford Mill: 40, New Town: 33 The 31 Titans traveled to take on their undefeated rivals at Milford Mill Academy on Friday evening. The game started off with strong defense on both sides, as the two teams combined for just seven points halfway through the first. After the slow start, there were 19 points scored by the end of the first, but by halftime, the Millers clung to a narrow 17-15 lead. Milford extended the lead by two points over the next eight minutes, then another three in the final quarter, winning the rivalry match 40-33. Pikesville: 101, Owings Mills, 7 On Friday, the undefeated Panthers hosted an Owings Mills team with just one win during the regular season. It took just seven seconds for sophomore Qaidence David to score the game’s first points, and by the end of the quarter, Pikesville held a 35-0 lead. The Golden Eagles scored their first points of the game just under three minutes into the second quarter, but by halftime, Pikesville held a 57-2 lead. Owings Mills put up another five in the third quarter, but Pikesville crossed the triple-digit line with a long two-pointer with 75 seconds left, finalizing the first 100-point game in Baltimore County this season. For Pikesville, Kyndall Richardson, Mariah Jones-Bey, Qaidence David, NyJae Malikali-El, and Skylah Anderson each crossed the ten point mark in the blowout.

LR pulled out a come-from-behind victory against Brunswick 32-21 after being down 21-18 at the half. LR gave up an opening kickoff touchdown on a fumble and had to claw all the way back.

In 2023, the Loch Raven Raiders varsity girls soccer team took home the Baltimore County championship with an 11-1 regular season record. The team made it to the regional finals, but fell to the Liberty Lions in a 3-1 loss at home. In 2024, following one of the most dominant seasons in the entire county, Loch Raven was unable to field a girls soccer team. Now in 2025, after putting first-year head coach Adam Smelser in the drivers’ seat, the Raiders were looking to get back to their old, winning ways. Coach Smelser explained that over the offseason, and especially throughout the summer, he turned to social media to bring interest back to the team. “We were actively looking for players and gearing up for a fun, high-energy season… the goal was simple: bring soccer back, build excitement, and create an environment where everyone could have a great time together,” Smelser explained. At the beginning of tryouts, Loch Raven had thirteen athletes show up. With five freshmen and three athletes that had never played the sport, Coach Smelser knew that the most important thing to start with was the fundamentals. He explained that the team started with “clean passing, clean shooting, communication, and conditioning. Everything else would come with time.” Early on, two athletes, seniors Callie French and Sarah Watkeys stood out, and the two were named captains by the end of the first week. Throughout the next few weeks leading up to their first game of the regular season, the Lady Raiders picked up a few more athletes, bringing their roster to seventeen total. That first game came against Friends School of Baltimore, a top IAAM program. While Loch Raven lost 5-0, Smelser used the game as a learning opportunity for the athletes. “It was tough to compete in the first half… In the second half, we switched to a more defensive formation and focused on slowing them down, which we did more successfully,” Smelser said. Without starting goalkeeper Lilah Kniffin, Coach Smelser simply turned his attention to their next game. After turning their focus back to fundamentals, Loch Raven went on an incredible five game stretch. In three away and two home games over the next two weeks, the Lady Raiders outscored their opponents 48-7, going 5-0 during the stretch. Freshman fullback Zoe Wallace, who has the most points this season excluding seniors and was named a junior captain, felt incredible with the success. “I’m extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to help my team and be part of its success… I’m glad I was able to do my part,” Wallace said. Throughout the rest of the regular season, the offense did not slow down. Loch Raven managed eight goals in 70% of their wins, leading to a 10-1 finish, the only loss coming on opening day. The offense performed well enough throughout the season that Lilah Kniffin averaged just four shots every game. “A part of me really wants to get more action [as a goalie]… however I am greatly content with how this season went.” While the offense was undeniably spectacular, Loch Raven also had plenty of success on the defensive side of the ball. In the eleven game regular season, the team had 179 tackles that resulted in turnovers. Junior Kate Chantelau led the team with 34, despite coming into the season never having played the sport. “My defensive skills have mostly been built from prior years of lacrosse and field hockey. During this past month I have been able to transfer these skills into playing defense mid,” said Chantelau. She also credited her defensive success to the positive atmosphere throughout the whole team, explaining that it was only possible “because of all the support I had from teammates on the field.” The Lady Raiders will be going into the regional playoffs as the top seed in the 1A North I region. In her final season with the team, senior captain Callie French knows that her team still has more work to do. “My hope is that we are able to make the most of every moment. We have to play together and be the best team and family that we can be. I feel we are truly part of something special and hope to go as far as possible.” After starting the season with a group of athletes with varying amounts of experience playing soccer, Coach Smelser understands that this season’s successes are largely because of his athletes’ “dedication and hunger to take the pitch… I am beyond proud of this group. They truly deserved every bit of success they earned.”

The Rams showcased their attack in a strong preseason outing, scoring five times against Loch Raven. Senior Sebastian Ayal opened the scoring before combining with Senior Markin Mensah for the second. Freshman Christian Steinmore netted twice, while Junior Eric Landi added a solo strike. Loch Raven pulled one back, but Edgewood controlled play throughout.

The Raiders traveled down the beltway to take on the Panthers to open the season on December 11. In the first quarter, Pikesville got off to a hot start, holding the Raiders to just two while scoring fifteen to start the game, but the Raiders exploded in the second quarter, scoring thirteen points in the second quarter. Coming out of halftime ahead 31-15, the Panthers turned on the defense in the second half, holding Loch Raven to six total second half points. The game ended with a final score of 66-21. Sophomore Ka'nai Pyatt lead the scorers for Pikesville with 19 points while going 3/5 beyond the arc. Junior Mariah Jones-Bey and Sophomore Maya Chase were both perfect on free throws, contributing 75% of the team's total points from the line. For the Raiders, junior Jadon Conteh scored 10 points, going 2/3 from beyond the arc and leading Loch Raven in scoring. Pikesville looks ahead to a home match against Roland Park Country School on December 14 while Loch Raven moves on to take on Dunbar at home on December 13. Pikesville improves to 1-0 on the season and Loch Raven drops to 0-1, excluding one loss in a scrimmage against GW Carver.

Before Brandon Thomas became the head coach of Loch Raven boys basketball in 2018, the program's highest win total over the previous five years was just four. His primary goal was to surpass that win count, and now, under his leadership, Loch Raven has become one of the most consistent teams in the county. The Raiders’ identity is built on defense, energy, and hustle. These qualities helped lead the team to its best regular season during Coach Thomas' tenure. "Our players bought in, and we focused on taking one game at a time, not looking too far ahead," Thomas said. This approach will continue to be emphasized this season, as the back-to-back 1A regional champions aim to advance further in the state tournament. Seniors like Earl Jordan and Tyler Brandon are stepping into larger leadership roles as team captains, following the departure of a strong graduating class. Look out for Tyler as he is primed to take on a higher offensive workload this season “Our alumni base has been huge with support.” The alumni at Loch Raven gave Tyler an academic scholarship, and everyone on the team is greatly appreciative of what the alumni group has added to the program. Excited to see where the Raiders will end up this season!

Saturday Brunswick's Varsity Boys Soccer team won their state semi-finals game against Loch Raven's Varsity Boys Soccer team. It was a nice breezy evening perfect for a fall soccer game. In the first half Chase Malone(Senior)scored a great goal from outside the 18. Unfortunately for Brunswick, Loch Raven would counter by scoring a goal of their own. In the second half both defenses were playing really strong in the windy weather. The game stayed tied and would head into overtime. In overtime Brunswick would win with a crazy corner kick made by Christopher Vasquez Molina(Junior). This was an awesome game to watch and you should go to the Maryland 1A State Final, on November 16th, at 7:30 @Loyal University, against Liberty High School.

On November 8th, 2024, the FNL football game took place. It was Loch Raven playing against Brunswick. Quarter 1: The game started off with Loch Raven. Offense was strong for the Roaders through the entire play. The first touchdown was made by Brunswick at 3 minutes 41 seconds with a successful PAT. The score is 7 Home and 0 Guest. The Roaders made a second touchdown with 28.7 seconds left. An amazing final touchdown for the first quarter with the final score of 14-0. Quarter 2: A touchdown was made by Luke Nyambi at 1 minute 42 seconds, ending the second quarter with a total score of 21-0 before halftime. Quarter 3: At 5 minutes and 13 seconds, another was scored by the Roaders and at 1 minute 25 seconds Nate Borawski scored ending with an overall score of 35-0 for the third quarter. Quarter 4: The defense in both teams played well. No touchdowns were made. Champions of the match are the Brunswick Roaders with a final score of 35 Brunswick and 0 Loch Raven.

Cross country teams from across the county traveled to the Center for Maryland Agriculture for the county championship on October 18. Three seniors took the top three spots with Hereford's Sylvia Snider finishing in first wtih 20:04.82, Alexandra Lohse from Towson in second with 20:29.08, and Towson's Cecilia Van Lierop coming in third with 20:39.88. The Towson Generals took first place overall with 28 points, followed by the Hereford Bulls in second with 41 and the Dulaney Lions in third with 73.
