In a match that had a number of varsity players out due to a field trip, North Harford managed to pull off a 9-2 win against Edgewood High School. North Harford had a number of first time wins at the varsity level; Zyan Diaz at number 1 boys singles, Colton Pietrowski and Kaleb Batchelder at number 2 boys doubles, Izzy Moaddel at number 1 girls singles, Mar Carranza Baide and Charlotte Clement at number 1 girls doubles, Marissa Smith and Monica Carranza Baide at number 2 girls doubles, and Alex Fallon and Heleyna Jackson at mixed doubles.
Tough conditions for tennis, 30-40 mph winds. Wootton led by their top 3 singles players and seniors; Anthony Hall, Vikram Reddy, and Kyle Li found a way to earn a 5-2 victory.
The boys’ and girls’ tennis teams enter the 2025-26 spring season looking to build on a solid foundation and push deeper into postseason contention. Girls: On the girls' side, the program is entering a new era under head coach Michael Laukaitis, with senior captains Elizabeth Martin and Marie Boy leading the way. The Wildcats are coming off a dominant 10-1 campaign last season, rolling through a tough county schedule and losing only to Wootton. “I’m excited to have a great season with my teammates and hopefully I’m able to maintain the same success I had last season,” Martin said. “We have a senior-heavy team this year, which strengthens our leadership as a team and hopefully guides the new members of our team to success.” This season, the Wildcats face another demanding slate that should quickly reveal the depth of this group. They open with back-to-back home matches against Sherwood and B-CC before a challenging road stretch and a key midseason showdown with Wootton. With a new head coach setting the tone and a strong core of upperclassmen providing experience and leadership, the girls' tennis team is poised to keep itself among the county’s elite this spring. Boys: The boys are gearing up for a season full of change after losing nine seniors following last year. The Wildcats went 5-5 in the regular season, and they are hyped and ready for this season. “I think it’s just about being consistent,” senior captain Vijay Kannan said. “To have a really good team, you’ve gotta have commitment and consistency, and that comes down to showing up every day. It’s just important to develop a real love and a sense of passion for tennis.” Despite the loss of seniors from the previous season, the Wildcats are fueled by the excitement of new players, as well as returners stepping into leadership roles within the team. Head coach Chase Rieder, in his second season coaching the team, anticipates a season filled with growth. “Obviously [the nine seniors from last year] all graduated, and we have five returners, a lot of freshmen and a lot of sophomores,” Rieder said. “We’re going to be pretty good this year. Aberdeen's Varsity Tennis played Havre de Grace for the first match of the season. Aberdeen won 8-3. Both teams played hard and four of the eleven matches had to go to tiebreak.
Opening match. Wootton started 6 new players, all at doubles. Anthony Hall returned from missing the 2025 season to lead Wootton to a 7-0 win.
When many think of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), sports that come to mind are usually basketball or football. However, recently, tennis has shed a little more light. This year, three teams headlined the WCAC Championship for tennis: DeMatha, Bishop Ireton, and Paul IV. Within the past three seasons, DeMatha has secured two WCAC championships, falling short in 2024. DeMatha head coach Mark Dalzell began coaching within the program around 2012, alongside coaching their sister school, Elizabeth Seton. “When I started, we were just trying to get kids interested in high school tennis,” he stated. “Most were focused on junior tournaments.” Dalzell became the head coach of the program in 2019, and during his tenure, he has helped elevate the tennis program. Within the past three seasons, DeMatha has captured its 11th and 12th WCAC titles in the sport of tennis. The year that DeMatha fell short, 2024, is when Bishop Ireton took home the championship, beating DeMatha by 13 points. This season, the Cardinals finished second within the WCAC standings. In the 2025 WCAC Championship, DeMatha won three of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches, totaling 36 points. Paul VI came in second with 23 points. This season, the Panthers fell to both Bishop Ireton and DeMatha in the regular season, before facing them in the WCAC championship. Paul VI placed third within the WCAC standings and second within the WCAC Championship. As these schools continue to expand their programs, some are realizing that the sport of tennis is often overlooked. When asked how tennis can get more recognition across the country, Dalzell stated, “They need to have more national tournaments, or as an individual representing the schools.”
