On Saturday evening, the sixth-seeded Perry Hall Gators traveled to UMBC to take on the fourth-ranked Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons in the MPSSAA 4A Girls Soccer State Championship. In the semifinals, both teams shut out their opponents, with the Barons beating the eighth-seed Severn Run Wolves by two. The Gators came into the championship match after taking down the Leonardtown Raiders in a 1-0 contest. This game marked Perry Hall’s first championship appearance since 2019 while B-CC hasn’t made the final game in over a decade. The majority of the first half went by uneventfully, until B-CC junior Amy Maguire scored the game’s first goal on a free kick that tipped off Perry Hall goalie Joyce Robinson with under 90 seconds to go in the first half. It took 12 minutes of the second half for the Gators to equalize, as Gabrielle Richberg tucked her team’s first goal of the match into the top right corner of the net. With the game knotted at one, it took just 48 seconds for Barons’ sophomore Shilo James to give her team the lead on a rebound off the crossbar. Bethesda-Chevy Chase led 2-1 with over 27 minutes remaining in the championship game. Twenty minutes later, with fewer than ten minutes left in regulation, B-CC was called for a handball, giving senior Reese Pinell an opportunity for a penalty kick. The kick sailed over the crossbar and with under seven minutes left, the Barons retained a 2-1 lead. With just three minutes remaining in the state championship, Perry Hall’s Katelyn Price scored her team’s second goal of the game on a header from a few feet away, moving the score to 2-2, which would be the score at the end of regulation. Just 90 seconds into overtime, University of South Carolina at Beaufort commit Gabriela Colon scored her team-leading eighteenth goal of the season to give Perry Hall their first state championship victory since 2019!

On November 11, the BCC Barons faced off against Perry Hall Gators in the MPSSAA 4A girls soccer state championship, with a 3-2 Perry Hall title thriller. The match kicked off with excitement, for the Barons brought a student section that overpowered the Perry Hall crowd. Both teams exchanged strong attacks, and the Gators almost recorded the first goal of the game, with a free kick attempt that hit the bottom of the crossbar and slowly bounced forward toward the BCC keeper's back. Perry Hall put pressure on BCC for most of the half, not giving them much room to breathe and only allowed BCC longer-range shots. One shot forced the Perry Hall Goalkeeper to save it with fingertips that aimed at the top of the net. Both defenses stood strong making sure no big chances were allowed, but BCC forced out four calls against them that kept the Gator momentum. Perry Hall started to control possession in the BCC half, taking over four crosses and shots that went just wide of goal. BCC recorded two free kicks in the second half, where the first one got quickly intercepted by the Gators defense. Thirty-Eight minutes into the half, BCC recorded the first goal of the night scored by #7 Amy Maguire, aiming to the left side of the net and catching the Gators goalkeeper off guard as the fingertips of her glove were not enough. Perry Hall was dominating in possession, but couldn’t get points on the board as the first half ended 1-0 BCC lead. Perry Hall's possession quickly shifted towards BCC with the start of the second half. BCC started to maintain the ball and keep the game within Perry hall territory. Another shot from distance in the game almost catches Perry Hall Goalkeeper off guard as it hit the uprights of the bar. Goals were needed by Perry Hall, and Gabrielle Richberg was aware and tied the game 1-1 with a shot curving left to the top corner of the net. Celebrations were cut short for the gators, with seconds later BCC continued the crossbar trend. This time, with the ball landing right in front of the goal and allowing #15 Shilo James the easy Tap-in, once again grabbing the lead at 2-1. BCC had recorded 5 or more shots within the half, looking confident with the distanced shots as they got closer. Two more chances almost allowed the BCC lead to grow, but passes were a bit too strong and rolled into the hands of the Goalkeeper at the edge of the box. 34 minutes into the second half, Perry Hall were given a penalty from a BCC handball in the box. The roar from BCC’s student section seemed to be too much, and it led to the penalty attempt being shot over the goal, keeping the game 2-1. The missed penalty didn’t worry Perry Hall, as three minutes later the Gators tied the game from a cross, led by a header from #10 Katelyn Price, bringing the game to 2-2. The game was officially heading to Overtime. Overtime wouldn’t last long, as the Gators were pushing with a one on one moment between #25 Gabriela Colon took the game-winning shot to the left side of the net, handing Perry Hall the championship. Perry Hall completes the comeback as 4A MPSSAA State champions, finishing the game 3-2.

The first half of the MPSSAA 4A Girls soccer state championships ends with a BCC 1-0. A freekick was given to BCC with two minutes remaining that allowed #7 Amy Maguire the goal with a shot left side of the net, for the ball bounced off the Keepers Fingertips.

Overtime

On October 7, the Albert Einstein Titans faced off the Whitman Vikings in a 3-1 defeat. Whitman won the coin toss and elected to take possession first. The game kicked off with a strong Titan defensive start as the Vikings quickly marched onto Titan territory. 5 mins into the half, the Titans were first to add points onto the board, taking advantage from a pass mistake by the Vikings, allowing #20 Chase Tucker to trace the ball down and score an easy one-on-one situation. It only took seconds after the goal for Whitman to tie the game, going down the field straight out of kickoff and taking a shot. The shot was saved by #0 Maya Garnett, but rebounded straight to Whitman and allowed #8 Maika Lotsch scored the tap-in goal, bringing the game equal once again at 1-1. Defensive errors from the Vikings almost handed the Titans a second goal for the night. A miscommunicated pass landed in the hands of Tucker for the second time and shot left side of the goal, hitting the goalpost and barely saved by Vikings goalkeeper #99 Hannah Lewington. 30 minutes into the half, the match remained neck-and-neck as Einstein was playing well built defense, where the game remained to be in Einstein’s side of the field. Einstein showed better signs of possession into Whitman territory, becoming more accurate with their passes but couldn’t find that goal-opening lane and be able to march down the field. Whitman had the speed advantage over the Titans, yet they couldn't attempt any shots inside the penalty box. Time drained out as the first half ended, remaining even at 1-1. The second half kicked off with Whitman continuing to stay in Titan possession, a major pattern that continued to improve for the Vikings. A penalty was called in favor for the Vikings, giving Whitman their first lead of the game from penalty taker #6 Ailya Wales, going up 2-1. Whitman continued to dominate time of possession. 15 minutes into the half, Einstein had not recorded a single shot, knowing that Whitman marked down Einstein players with fast aggressiveness. Marking down Einstein attackers started to trend by Whitman’s defense. Two or three defenders were seen pressuring an Einstein player when maintaining possession, pocketing the player and forcing them to lose possession. 25 minutes into the half, Whitman increased their lead to 3-1 after a corner cross was deflected that allowed #17, Kaitlyn Garnett, to take the shot in the crowd of players and get the ball back of the net. The Titan defense started to look physically drained from Whitman’s dominance on possession, also not receiving much help from the offense. Time ticked down, as the Whitman Vikings walked out with a 3-1 victory over the Titans.

Yesterday, September 30th, Wootton's Varsity Girls Soccer team played one of their rivals, the Quince Orchard Cougars. The game kicked off at 7:15 pm at the Cougar Dome. In the first half, it was noticeable that Quince Orchard had the home field advantage. They were able to take distanced shots, exposing the gap between Wootton's defense and midfield. Neither team scored at all in the second half. The game ended in a draw and the teams went into overtime. Quince Orchard scored about six minutes into sudden death, sealing the victory. The goal scorers for Quince Orchard were sophomore, Victoria Fenzel and junior, Kaitlyn Geraghty. The goal scorer for the Patriots was Senior, Mia Stubbins. Despite the loss, Wootton goalie, Taylor Robinson had an exceptional game ending with about 15 saves. The Patriots next game is against Churchill, another competitive team. Good luck Patriots!
