VHS Boys volleyball beat Paint Branch HS 3 x 0 tonight at home. Game 1: 25 x 14, Game 2: 26 x 24, Game3: 25 x 19. Next game is on Wednesday at away vs Blake HS at 7pm. Coed team also plays at 5:30pm.

Of the 13 players on the team roster, 5 are returnees from last year’s team. Four of the returnees were starters and are much stronger and capable this year. Seniors Alemayehu Tewodrus and Marcelo Wheeler will spearhead the attacks as setters with classmate setter Ononto Purification in the lineup on specific combinations. Tewodrus and Wheeler also stand out as big blockers and heavy hitters in the front row. The big spikes will come from Alex Vanegas Lynn, Isaiah Powell, Zavion Lanhan and Jahsiah Cross. Vanegas Lynn and Powell are dominating power hitters who can hit anywhere on the court. Lanham will attract a lot of attention in the middle, and Cross is intimidating as an oppo hitter. “We worked on defense and our in-system counter attacks off of free ***** in the pre-season,” said 2nd year Coach Brian Molina. The brothers, junior Luis Lopez Guillen and freshman Jeffri Lopez Guillen, are defensive specialists who will be in different combinations of the lineup for that purpose. Others to watch are sophomore outside hitter Hunter Watson and senior Dinh Nguyen as a defensive specialist. Watson is being groomed to be a future power hitter for the team. Last year, Springbrook focused on an aggressive attack strategy. The emphasis is the same in 2025, except they now incorporate defensive specialists and liberos in the lineup to add the defensive piece to their game strategy. The Springbrook Varsity Boys Volleyball Team will be an exciting team to watch in 2025.

Wow! Massive first round upset. Great win for Blake

Tonight's playoff game against Whitman High School will be a challenge for the Springbrook Sun Devils. Marcelo Wheeler, their seasoned and primary setter is back, but has had limited practice since his injury from last Thursday. The team will also be without the consistent and reliable senior, starter and team captain Nevan Vando who suffered an injury at practice on Tuesday. "Nevan is the leader on the court and shines the most when momentum shifts the other way," said Coach Molina. Senior outside hitter Matti Wakiwaya is expected to be late because of a scheduled Calculus 3 exam from 4 to 6 pm. Wakiwaya is also a big block for the team on defense. Springbrook will likely look to seniors Dustin Nguyen, Kenneth Taguilig and Justin Der to fill in the starter role.

The Springbrook Boys Volleyball Team suffered a big loss against Seneca Valley. The closest Springbrook got to Seneca Valley was in the first set, although losing with a score of 23-25. They never got closer in games 2 and 3. The Blue Devils played without primary setter Marcelo Wheeler who was out for a sprain ankle and Coach Molina who was under a one-game suspension. The passes weren't there for the backup setters who were unable to launch any counter attack against a solid Seneca Valley team. Seneca Valley capitalized on the Sun Devils errors and dug a deeper hole for the visiting team and winning it in straight sets.

Springbrook overcame a seasoned Paint Branch team in an exciting 5 set match win. “Paint Branch out hustled us; they chased ***** that should have been points for us and put them back in play,” said the Blue Devils’ coach. Both teams were almost evenly matched. Springbrook had 43 kills for a 39% kill percentage while Paint Branch had 38 kills with a 38% kill percentage. Springbrook’s Isiah Powell, Alexander Vanegas-Lynn and Matti Wakiwaya contributed 27 combined kills. Per the Blue Devils’ coach, “First year player Bryce Powell had 6 kills in the match, but all of them came at critical points of the game that lifted us out of a hole.” This was a big win for the team and school at home

With home court advantage, a determined Northwood team took Springbrook to its limits with pride. "They had their moments that took our momentum away and kept them in the game," said the Blue Devils first year coach. "But, thanks to our seasoned players like Nevan Vando, Alex Vanegas-Lynn and Marcelo Wheeler, we eventually got our rhythm back," The win is the 6th for Springbrook who is tied with Paint Branch as leaders in the East Division.

It was a good contest between the two sides, but Springbrook grabbed control early and saw out the victory in each set. A ton of talent on both squads!

A determined and well-coached Blake team took Springbrook to its limits. Although Springbrook won 3-1, they struggled with Blake's tips over the blockers and errors in passing causing challenges in the Blue Devils counter attacks. Springbrook did find their rhythm when setter Marcelo Wheeler synched up with outside hitter Matti Wakiwaya and middle hitter Isiah Powell.

Springbrook came out of the blocks with all cylinders firing. They took the 1st set 25-18 displaying big blocks in the front row with brothers Isiah and Bryce Powell, joined by Nevan Vando when they went up for a triple block. Sherwood adjusted their attack with tips over the block which occasionally fell for points, but eventually picked up by the back row. The tactic slowed the Devil's tempo causing setter Marcelo Wheeler to vary their attacks by launching precision sets to power hitters Matti Wakiwaya and Alex Vanegas-Lynn for kills. Springbrook took the 2nd set 25-9 thanks to the strong serves by Alemayehu Tewodros, Bryce Powell and Kenneth Tanguilig. In the 3rd set Sherwood capitalized on the Devil's errors in receiving and passing and maintained the lead throughout the set. Springbrook eventually settled down ending the set 26-24 with a solo block by Wakiwaya.

Tough loss for the Blue Devils in 5 sets against a reputable and established volleyball program at Blair HS. Springbrook took the 1st set 25-19 and the 3rd set 25-21, while Blair took the 2nd set 25-23, 4th set 25-21. and the 5th set 15-13. Springbrook displayed solid hitting by Matti Wakiwaya, Alex Vanegas-Lynn and Isiah Powell. Isiah's brother, Byrce, also stood out as an oppo and blocker. Setter Marcelo Wheeler mixed the sets evenly amongst Springbrook hitters. Nevan Vando and Dustin Nguyen were also instrumental io defense. The Springbrook team showed they had the talent with great offense and defensive systems to be reckoned with in 2024.

Magruder's Boys VB is rebuilding this year. They played with passion and determination. Excellent coaching who know doubt will develop the team to be reckoned with.

This game will probably be the most hype game in MD Both teams show determination and both team are willing to sacrifice everything to win this game. What finds this interesting is this game is epic and both teams are RIVALRIES. Be at this GAME!!!
