Entering February, Montgomery County teams have had no action for over a week, with most team’s last games dating back to January 21. With three weeks to go in the regular season, the county will enter February with twelve teams holding a winning record, including an undefeated Whitman squad and two others with just one loss, Magruder and Poolesville. In the season’s final three weeks before the postseason kicks off, here are the top storylines to watch for in Montgomery County Varsity Boys Basketball: 1. Four of Whitman’s (11-0) final games will come against teams with +.500 records, as the Vikings are set to play Sherwood and Richard Montgomery at home while they will travel to Walter Johnson and Damascus. Thus far, Whitman has only played three throughout the entire season, two of which were in the team’s first two games of the year. They took down now 8-4 Blair by 15, followed by an eight point win over 9-3 Kennedy, but competition has since slowed down. Most recent games included 27-point wins over both 0-13 Gaithersburg and 1-11 Clarksburg. Junior Max Williams and senior Bobby Zedak are both averaging 16.5 PPG for the Vikings, and will need to keep performing at a high level if the Vikings want to remain undefeated as they look to avenge two consecutive state championship losses. 2. The game of the season for Montgomery County teams is yet to take place, and it won’t come until the final day of the regular season. Magruder (12-1) is set to travel to Poolesville (11-1) in the last game of the season on February 20. Prior to that, both teams have high-stakes match ups, as the Colonels are also set to rematch the 8-4 Paint Branch Panthers at home on Friday. The Panthers handed Magruder their lone loss, coming in a 62-48 road defeat. So far, Magruder has six wins over +.500 teams. Poolesville (11-1) is riding a 10 game win streak but they have not played a +.500 team in over three weeks. Their most recent game against a team with a winning record was against the 8-4 Seneca Valley Raiders, where they won by 20 points. The Falcons are set to face Northwest (7-7) and Clarksburg (1-11) before a rematch on the road against the Raiders, which is set to tip off on Friday at 7:15. 3. Five teams, Seneca Valley, Damascus, Walter Johnson, Paint Branch, and Blair all currently sit at 8-4. Out of these five, Paint Branch has the hardest schedule, with five games scheduled against winning teams, including 9-3 Kennedy, 11-3 Blake, and 12-1 Magruder while Blake has the easiest with just three, those being 9-3 Richard Montgomery, 9-3 Kennedy, and 7-5 Sherwood. Damascus comes in second, followed by Seneca Valley and Walter Johnson. 4. The Gaithersburg Trojans, who are yet to capture their first win this season have several chances before the end of the season to avoid a totally winless campaign. After tomorrow’s game against 12-1 Magruder, they’re set to travel to Paint Branch to take on the 3-8 Panther on Wednesday. Following that game, they’ll host the 3-10 Springbrook Blue Devils on Friday, and then the 2-11 Northwood squad to wrap up their season on February 20. Both of Northwood’s wins came against 1-11 teams, as they took down Rockville at home by five points in Mid-December, and Einstein on the road by seven on January 14. 5. Four teams in the East are separated by just one game in league play, with Blake and Magruder at 4-1 while Sherwood and Paint Branch sit at 3-2. Each team will face two of the others by the end of this week with the final of the three before the season’s end. Apart from divisional games, Blake will have a three-game stretch where they play 0-13 Gaithersburg, 6-6 Bethesda-Chevy Chase, and 4-8 Wootton. Sherwood will play 3-10 Springbrook in their first game back from the week off, but they will finish their season against 11-0 Whitman, 8-4 Blair, and 8-4 Walter Johnson. Finally, Paint Branch will host 8-4 Damascus and will travel to face 9-4 Kennedy in two of their final three games of the regular season. A big shakeup could be coming in the East division before playoffs begin!

A retired social studies teacher who spent 40 years in Montgomery County classrooms, he now spends his afternoons outside with the team. For those unfamiliar with the sport, cross country might look monotonous. But Frace knows how to keep his runners motivated, recognizing the effort they put in every day. On the back of their team shirts is the mantra: “Cross Country: No Timeouts, No Halftimes, No Substitutes.” “I tell them that honestly, they do more in one workout than the vast majority of students in the school do in a year,” Frace said. Springbrook features a mix of seasoned leaders and emerging talent. On the girls’ side, freshman Aeden Berhane has impressed by competing like an experienced veteran, while Kori Danso, only in her first year with the team, has already become the No. 1 runner after a strong spring track season. The boys’ team is similarly balanced, anchored by veteran leadership and promising newcomers. Senior Jonah Mays is a quiet but steady leader, while Darly Philogene stands out for his running ability, attitude, and work ethic. So how does Frace get the best out of his runners? He said he coaches them the same way he would want his own children coached. “I have always considered it a privilege to coach and that parents/caregivers have entrusted their children with me and my assistant,” Frace said. “Respect and integrity are key characteristics I expect of myself and the members of the team.” One of his main philosophies is “pack running,” where teammates stick together during a race. He believes it builds both individual strength and team success. “Each runner needs to realize that they must strive to do their best and that the team will do better when the pack does,” Frace said. Frace has guided some remarkable groups in the past, including the boys’ 2021 team that won the first regional championship in school history. He remembers their dedication year-round, not just during the season, as the foundation of that success. This year, he has set ambitious goals: steady improvement for every runner, a division title for both the boys and girls, and qualification for the state meet. The program’s momentum is especially visible on the girls’ side, which now boasts its largest roster in years. Beyond competition, Frace emphasizes perspective. He wants his athletes to see running as a lifetime sport, a way to build healthy habits — and, just as importantly, to enjoy the camaraderie of being part of a team. To keep things fresh, he mixes up workouts and organizes team-bonding activities like pool parties, movie nights, and an intersquad meet. And, true to form, he’s never shy about sneaking in a dad joke. Frace also credits the long-term support around him. Assistants Julie Trap, Liz Kelley and Erin Crowley have been with the program for more than 20, 15 and 15 years, respectively, while athletic director Dan Feher continues to provide unwavering backing. Together, they’ve created an environment where Springbrook cross country thrives. Win or lose, one thing remains constant: Springbrook cross country fosters an inclusive, supportive community — something Frace is proud to call the team’s true legacy.

Einstein won 2-0 against Springbrook
On May 8, the Einstein Titans suffer a heartbreaking 11-10 defeat against the Springbrook blue devils. Both teams were facing each other with some tension after Einstein barely escaped a 7-6 overtime win in the last meeting between the titans and the Blue Devils. Einstein made sure to enter the game aggressive as the game started. The Titans played strong offense with the help of key passes that led to a goal by #18 Chase Tucker. Tucker continued to not be an absence as the JV bump up scored another goal off of a penalty shot. #5 Paige shultz strengthened the lead with a strong rush near the goal. Springbrook continued to play with agility despite the lead Einstein possessed, winning every face off and starting to grow momentum. This momentum worked as Springbrook came back from the 3 goal deficit and scored 3 goals all from penalty shots. The first quarter ended with a 3-3 intense game. Springbrook brought the game leveled as the 2nd quarter started, but that momentum slowly started to end as Einstein made sure to not let up another 3 goal lead. #17 Jocelyn Kay would have a strong 1 on 1 goal to get the lead back. Einstein continued with the offensive aggression again from a penalty shot, as teams know its almost a 99% chance Limauro scores off of a penalty. The blue devils goalie made sure to keep the lead from getting worse in having 6 total saves, but wasn’t enough for another Limauro Goal into the bottom net. The half ended with a 6-3 Titans lead. Titans continued to progress as the 2nd half started, scoring a quick goal by Kay once again from getting wide open. Springbrook knew they would have to keep the game close seeing the 3 goal lead once again, in which they did make it close. Springbrook would score 3 additional goals with the help of players #10 and #2, bringing the Einstein lead down to one at 2:34, but Einstein wanted to make the lead slightly bigger, with Shutltz once again adding up to the lead. The quarter ended with a 9-7 lead. Springbrook continue the momentum and mindset of a comeback as the last quarter came in, despite #11 Lena Fleschner starting goal. A controversial move came into play for the Titans, subbing out the starting goalie for the backup this late into the game in the playoffs. This would cost the titans, with Springbrook tying up the score at 10-10 minutes laters with only a minute left. The faceoff commenced with Springbrook winning the ground ball and took one last push towards Einstein. The Titans would give up a crucial last second penalty shot with 17 seconds remaining in the 4th. Springbrook would score the penalty shot by #10 Zepporra Linday in completing the comeback and winning the game 11-10. The Titans season ends in a heart breaker as Springbrook will head to regional finals and will either face Richard Montgomery or Wheaton.
Last night (4/9), the Magruder Colonels thrash the Blue Devils of Springbrook at home with a dominating score of 11-0. After losing their last game versus Poolesville, the Colonels bounced back to make their record 2-3. This team has now one two games by 11 goals, with their first one being an impressive 12-1 win versus Watkins Mill. This is definitely a team to keep an eye out for this season. Come out to their next game versus the Quince Orchard Cougars @ Quince Orchard High School at 7:15 PM and watch them run the show again!
