Heading into the final month of the regular season, Montgomery County has five schools that have reached double-digit win titans, while Whitman remains undefeated at 11-0. Fresh off a week off from last week’s snowstorm, high-stakes games are starting as early as today. Beyond top-tier games, multiple teams are vying for the county’s top spot. Here are the most important storylines that are emerging from Montgomery County Girls Varsity Basketball: 1. The county’s top tier teams are playing other top tier teams. On Monday, the first day back, 9-5 Walter Johnson will travel to face 11-1 Churchill, while 9-3 Wootton will host the Whitman Vikings, looking to give the team their first loss. Also this week, Magruder will travel to Sherwood, Clarksburg will face Poolesville, Walter Johnson will go to Quince Orchard, and Wootton will face Churchill. With that said, the undisputable game of the month will happen this Wednesday, as the county’s top teams, the 11-1 Bulldogs will face off against the 11-0 Vikings. The winner is set to take the MoCo lead. 2. While the top teams will play the top teams, programs on the other end of the standings will also face off against each other. The 1-10-1 Wheaton Knights will face off against a 1-11 Northwood squad on Monday evening. Northwood will then travel to take on the 3-9 Blair Blazers while Seneca Valley faces Watkins Mill. These are just a few of the games that the bottom county teams are set to face, all of which will happen in the first week back. 3. The Einstein Titans have been killing their divisional opponents. Throughout the season, five of eight of their wins came against in-region rivals. Out of their final eight games, six will be against their regional opponents, with the other two coming against Watkins Mill and Wootton in two of the final three weeks of the season. Despite dropping three of their last five, the Titans have a great opportunity to rise up the county standings. 4. Wootton’s final eight opponents looks to cause several problems. Each of their next four games will come against teams with winning records, including 11-0 Whitman, 7-6 Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 11-1 Churchill, and 7-4 Quince Orchard. Then, after games against Northwest and Blake, the Patriots will finish their season on the road against 9-5 Walter Johnson and at home against 8-4 Einstein. As the team looks to get to double-digit wins, these final eight games may keep them from getting beyond eleven, but taking two to three of the six should be considered a win for Wootton.
The Watkins Mill Wolverines brought their "A game" to Wootton HS as they led at the end of the first quarter 19-14. In the second quarter, Chase Mitchell led the way with 2 treys along with one each by Chase Winokur, and Cameron Pietak. At halftime, the Patriots were within one, 31-30, In the second half the battle continued as Lester Walker of Watkins Mills seem to score at will with three treys. The Patriots were up to the task as well as three pointers came from guards, C. Winokur, C. Mitchell, and Ted Jeong. On defense, Wootton began to limit the Wolverine's "crosscuts' in the lane while wingman Darnell Egoto brought down 8 rebounds. The Patriots "4-out" offense began working as Egoto scored four points from the field and two shots from the foul line. By the end of quarter three, Wootton was up 48-44. In the final frame, Wootton got a lift from freshman guard as he hit two shots from beyond the arc. Wootton's lead stretched to 60-54 with over two minutes remaining. Walker gave it his all for Watkins Mill as he scored beyond the arc and inside the lane. Free throws by Mitchell and Roth sealed the victory for Wootton as they now have won three games in a row! Lester Walker finished with 35 points to lead the Wolverines. Wootton finished with five players scoring in double figures. Chase Mitchell ended with 16 points and Chase Winokur added 12. Darnell Egoto scored a "double-double" with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Cameron Pietak finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds. Kevin Roth add 11 points. One Friday, January 23, Wootton travels to Northwood HS. Watkins Mill continues on the road as they play Magruder HS.

In an intense semifinal matchup Thursday night, Rockville High School defeated Watkins Mill 3-1, securing their spot in the playoff Finals! Both teams left it all on the court in a game filled with powerful hits and non-stop energy. The tension was high—especially between Rockville’s Timothy Sargent and Watkins Mill’s Charles Hervé, who both delivered some jaw-dropping strikes. Rockville came out strong, winning the first two sets. The third set pushed past 25 points, with Watkins Mill fighting back to take the set and keep their hopes alive. But in the fourth, the Rams shut it down, dominating with a 25-14 win to seal the match! Congrats to the Rockville Rams for advancing to the finals against Sherwood! In a surprising regular-season upset, Rockville managed to beat Watkins Mill — and they did it without Watkins Mill’s best player on the court. For many, this win shook the bracket predictions and proved Rockville’s grit. But let’s be clear: that win came under unique conditions, and most teams and coaches around the league know it. With their top star back and healthy, Watkins Mill is still projected to win the entire MCPS coed volleyball playoffs. They’ve been dominant all season, showing a combination of athleticism, smart play-calling, and deep bench strength. The Rockville loss was a bump, but it may have been the wake-up call Watkins Mill needed to sharpen their focus heading into the postseason. Rockville, meanwhile, has earned respect. They capitalized on the opportunity, played a clean and disciplined game, and showed they can hang with top teams. But in the playoffs, they’ll likely face a full-strength Watkins Mill, and the rematch would be a whole different battle. Despite the stumble, Watkins Mill remains the clear favorite to win the championship. With their star player back, they’re expected to power through the bracket — and you can bet they’ll be looking for revenge if they meet Rockville again.
On April 25, The Girls Einstein Titans defeated the Watkins Mills Wolverines in a strong 11-4 victory. The 1st quarter revolved around Einstein Dominance, winning multiple ground balls and keeping the game on Wolverine Territory. Einstein attacker #7 Caroline Davis put the first points on the board from a simple penalty shot. The goals wouldn’t end for Einstein as they scored two more from players such as #5 Paige Shultz and and #21 Kayla Rich. Watkins Mills was seen invisible offensively and did not take a single shot in Einstein territory, ending the quarter with a 3-0 Titan lead. Knowing that the Titans would play their emergency game the next day against Springbrook, most starters for Einstein were benched to let the Substitutes get some playtime at the start of the 2nd quarter. Watkins Mills started to finally show signs of life after a strong bull rush goal from captain #21 Olivia Girard. The Wolverines were gaining momentum but the Einstein defense made sure it stood ground. The Titans extended the lead after a #13 Elena Limauro penalty goal, Limauro is known to be excellent when taking penalties. It was a quiet 2nd quarter for both teams and the first half ended 4-1 going towards Einstein. Watkins Mill’s goalie started showing signs of frustration leading up to the start of the 3rd quarter, and the Titans made sure to make it slightly worse for her. Einstein would score 4 more goals in the 3rd quarter, with 3 out of the 4 being taken in the penalty area. Einstein was lucky enough to get this foul called as a result of being aggressive into the crease. Player #2 Sara Torre Limas, pulled one back to reduce the deficit Watkins mills was facing, ending the quarter 8-2. Despite the deficit growing stronger, the Watkins Mills starters were still in play due to the roster only consisting of 12 players, just enough to run a full team in a game. Most of Einstein starters were back in the game to gain some playtime heading into the 4th quarter. Making sure this game was put to a close, the Titans scored 3 more goals, once again from Limauro and from #5 Paige Shultz, who secured the hat trick. Watkins Mill would allow these goals after a play call in which all the players grouped up at the middle of the crease and rushed in an attempt to score, without knowing the middle of the field was completely open once they lost the ball. The bizarre game plan led to a bigger lead for Einstein and more frustration towards the goalie. Girard would achieve a hat trick with two goals in the 4th but was seemingly too late, ending the game with an 11-4 Einstein Win. The Titans move up to 5-4 and will face their makeup game against Springbrook on Friday as Watkins Mills drops to 1-9 and next faces Wheaton on the road.

On Friday, February 28th, The Magruder Colonels stepped their game up against Watkins Mill as it was the first round of PLAYOFFS!! The Boys Varsity game had everyone at the edge of their seats as previously in regular season, the Colonels came up short to Watkins Mill. As intense as the game was, everything went down to the wire in the 4th quarter. Many seem to doubt Watkins Mill for their potential, but this year they held up a strong fight against the Colonels. Captain Joy Dovy says,” Watkins mill is so much better then they were in previous years with two good players.” One of these players being Senior Hassan Nazir, who also achieved 1,000 career points in his entire highschool career. The Colonels fell short to the Wolverines in Regular Season, but what was the difference between the two games that led them to success? Joy Dovy explains,” The difference between our two games in the regular season and playoffs is that we played with energy and intensity the entire game in the playoffs which kept us in the lead for the whole game.” Tommorow, March 4th 2025, the Colonels compete against the Sherwood Warriors as their second round of playoffs, We shall see what the Colonels bring to the game and hopefully bag the next win !!
