It was already in progress in the first period when I came out from the media room. The Indians were up, 8-2. Points from them were adding and adding. The score had reached 22-9, however the Chargers began to make a run bringing the score to 24-18 by halftime. Second half, one of the alumni photographers told me Lackey would turn up the heat That is exactly what happened as one of their stars, #2 Gordon Malik got some quick steals for scores. Defensive pressure arose, and it was the Lackey Chargers with the lead now. Although their biggest lead was 7 points, the Indians brought the game to a tie by the end of fourth, 34-34. Overtime was 4:00 minutes of more rumbling and wrestling between the teams. Being in the bonus first gave the Lackey the advantage leading to a 44-42 victory. TO BOTH TEAMS, just want to say you both put up a tremendous fight. Proud of the work you accomplished throughout the season and the successes you will achieve in the future. CONGRATS to the Chargers on achieving the ultimate goal of being tate champs. Proud of you and I am excited to see you win. Lackey took home the biggest game of the season in an overtime nail-biter. Wicomico controlled most of the game early, building a strong lead and looking comfortable heading into halftime. But whatever was said in Lackey’s locker room clearly hit—because they came out with a completely different energy. Fueled by determination, Lackey stormed back from the deficit with relentless effort on both ends of the floor. Every possession mattered, and every player pushed themselves to the limit. At one point, the intensity was so high that a player was even seen throwing up in the trash can—yet still giving everything he had. That same grit showed up in a huge way from #2, who delivered an unbelievable performance. In just one half, he grabbed well over 10 rebounds, crashing the boards with nonstop effort. Despite not being the biggest player on the court, he played with the biggest heart, making his presence felt on every play. His impact didn’t go unnoticed. As the game went on, the crowd erupted into MVP chants that echoed through the gym—a moment every player dreams of. With all eyes on him, he rose to the occasion and helped lead Lackey to a hard-fought championship victory. Now, Lackey heads back to school not just as champions—but with a story they’ll be telling for years.

On Friday evening, the eight-seeded Lackey Chargers traveled to the east side of Baltimore County to take on the undefeated Sparrows Point Pointers in the 1A/2A football state quarterfinals at First Mariner Field at Sparrows Point High School. In the regional playoff, the Chargers gave up just nineteen total points in two games against Kent Island and Calvert, while the Pointers had given up just twelve in games against Surrattsville and Central. In their third consecutive game against a PG county team, the Pointers looked to continue the longest undefeated streak in school history in front of the home crowd. Sparrows Point looked to have Lackey controlled on their opening drive, but on a third down just before the 50 on their first series, senior quarterback Malik Gordon faked a jet sweep handoff before running it up the middle for a gain of 30, setting up a fourth down run three minutes later where he got into the end zone, giving his team a 7-0 lead with half of the quarter remaining. On their first drive, the Pointers had a long play of their own, as Maceo Hardnett found junior Paxton Clark for a quick completion, but after a broken tackle, Clark got into the red zone as he was tackled at the sixteen. A few plays later, Toby Stallings lined up for a 35 yard field goal, but the kick fell short and right. On the first play of their next drive, Lackey senior Ronald Johnson took a handoff up the middle, breaking several tackle attempts, and rushing over 60 yards before being pushed out of bounds at the Pointers’ 21-yard-line. Following an offensive holding call on second down, Lackey’s Dionte Little found the end zone from ten yards out. A high snap led holder Ayden Perry to attempt an impromptu two-point conversion, but the Pointers defense held strong at the end zone, keeping the score 13-0. Sparrows Point threatened in their next drive after a long catch and run from junior Macin McNew with an unnecessary roughness penalty called on the defense, but the Chargers’ defense brought the Pointers back to midfield, where they turned the ball over on downs. With just six minutes left in the first half, Hardnett threw a perfect pass to an open Chase Carnahan, setting the Pointers up deep in Lackey territory. Just three plays later, Carnahan would take a jet sweep, and after breaking several tackles, ran into the end zone to bring his team back within one score. On the Chargers’ next drive, with the ball at midfield, Gordon found sophomore Ayden Perry open deep downfield, leading to a 50 yard touchdown pass. After a two point conversion, Lackey led 21-7, the score at halftime. To open the second half, Maceo Hardnett was looking for Paxton Clark on the outside, but Lackey senior Jayden Miles jumped in front of the pass and brought an interception to the house to give the Chargers a commanding three-score lead. After Sparrows Point turned the ball over on downs, Lackey needed just three plays to set up Malik Gordon for a 23-yard rushing touchdown, his second of the game. As the third quarter wound down, the Pointers moved steadily down the field, and despite a fourteen yard sack from Dionte Little, Sparrows Point scored with just under two minutes in the half. Their second touchdown came on a six-yard rushing touchdown from senior Cam Watkins. After failing to convert a fake-PAT, the score was 35-13. The Pointers attempted an onside kick after the touchdown, but an illegal procedure penalty on Sparrows Point along with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the sideline gave Lackey the ball at the opposing 25-yard line. On second down with nineteen seconds left in the quarter, Ronald Johnson scored his first touchdown of the game to put his team up 42-13, the final score of this quarterfinal contest. For Sparrows Point, Maceo Hardnett went 23/38 with over 300 passing yards on the day, while the Chargers had two running backs, Ronald Johnson and Jayden Miles surpass 120 rushing yards. In the semifinals, Lackey will face off against the Liberty Lions, who are coming off a 39-38 win on the road against the Hereford Bulls.

Last season, the Lackey girls' soccer team became regional champions for the first time in their school history, and this year, they plan to continue that success, hoping to repeat as regional champions again. "It was very exciting and historical," said players Yaliayah Reyes, Valeria Diaz and captain Nyomi Pledger. However, this year will be a little different from last year, as the Chargers will have a new face leading their team. Following the departure of the previous head coach, Jenn Hoiler, Mark Rollins will assume the role of new head coach for the program. Rollins is no stranger to the sport, having been part of the coaching staff for the boys' team for the past four years. He initially decided to come on as a coach to help because his sons began to get involved with the team at Lackey. It was last season that he decided to look into working with the girls' team, so when the position opened up, he claimed it to be "good timing." "Last year, I spent more time with the girls' team," stated Rollins. "I went with them through the playoffs, winning their first regional title." Not only will the Chargers have a new head coach, but they will also lose three seniors, including previous captains Kerry Boyce and Sammie Kindall. However, that will not be a problem for Lackey, as most of the roster that took the field last year will return this season. With all these changes, the team plans to stick by their new coach, remain united as one, and learn to adapt and adjust to some of the changes. This season, Lackey has a few big matches that they are excited for, such as LaPlata and Calvert. However, the match they are looking forward to is against Patuxent, as they are eager to redeem themselves. The Chargers will play their first regular-season game against Friendly on Friday, September 5.
