There are many changes that have taking place since graduating from there in 1996. A lot is different except the heart and soul for the love of football (actually all athletic competition). Today, that heart and soul was in the air as I walked on the field. This night was about the seniors, as the Hall celebrated them. The stage was being set for some beautiful football to be played. St. Mary’s was looking to end the Cardinals senior night with a Saints victory on their side. They were on a run after defeating Cardinal’s rival, Loyola, 50-35 the previous week. Calvert Hall was on the same type of energy, having beat MIAA great McDonogh, 28-21. It was going to be interesting to see what went down here. Let’s dive in.


 1ST -3RD QTRs SAINTS - 0 CARDINALS - 0
 These quarters of play were pretty much defensive standoffs. Each team had opportunity to march down the field, but because the excellence of defense from both, drives ended in punts or turn-over-on-downs. 4TH QTRS & DOUBLE OVERTIME. SAINTS - 14 CARDINALS - 13
 It was in the remaining 2:00 minutes of the fourth, Calvert Hall marched down and scored the first touchdown of the game with about 20 seconds left for St. Mary’s to answer. THIS IS WHEN REAL FOOTBALL is played. Saints went right down to red zone and scored a TD, with only seven seconds left for them to work with. OVERTIME, the first one, the Cardinals stopped the Saints, leaving them the option to attempt field goal, which the Saints missed. With possession, the sky was open for Calvert Hall until a bad snap where St. Mary’s recovered. Another overtime round was now activated. However, Calvert Hall would start with the first possession. Asked a few of the Central County Hurricanes Youth Football team who they thought would win. Some said the Hall, others said St. Mary’s. MFV was rooting for his alma mater, but would not be angry if losing to St. Mary’s because they are a great team I’ve covered. Nothing but love over here. 


Calvert Hall scored but received a penalty (unsportsmanlike conduct) which forced the field goal opportunity to be farther back. Cardinal’s missed the extra point giving the Saints now a chance. And St. Mary’s took the opportunity, scored and made the extra point sealing the game with a victory, 14-13.


 TO MY CARDINALS, this is was not the desire of your heart. However, remember what your coach said to you at the end. Keep those words locked in your memory. You guys put on an excellent show. I don’t doubt your success. YOU guys walked off that field like grown men even though it hurt. FOREVER PROUD OF YOU, ALL YOUR COACHES, PARENTS and EVERYONE that has stood by you. You guys are great!!!! TO THE SAINTS, I love what you guys are building over there in Annapolis. CONGRATS on the W. Much respect to you guys, you played with excellence. You guys got one great team. Looking forward to your continued SUCCESS as you reach new heights. Definitely was a right move for you all to move up a division.

🏈🏈 FRIDAY NIGHT GAME OF THE WEEK 🆚 William Penn Charter x Calvert Hall Varsity Football First of all, HUGE THANK YOU to my alma mater, Calvert Hall College High School and varsity football team for allowing media coverage of this highly anticipated game. The Cardinals enter the 2025-26 season with new head coach, Tyler Ward. This game was important in order to set the tone for where the Cardinals want to project themselves. However, the William Penn Charter Quakers, out of Pennsylvania, sought to make that a difficult task. Let’s see how it played out. GAME RECAP Pregame energy for the Hall was on serious high. The Quakers brought some fire too. A little trash talking ensued as one Cardinal player shouted to the oncoming Quakers, “ you’re not in Pennsylvania anymore!!!” Cardinals began to focus in the locker room, as Chief Keef’s song “Love Sosa” amped the team up. Both teams returned to the field ready. First quarter was the trial and error period. Both the Quakers and Cardinals made big defensive stops. Each ironed out first period jitters. Anything not clicking revealed itself quickly here. Quakers ended up scoring on a pass which literally was in the back of the end zone. How the receiver caught that? I don’t know. Now, Coach Ward had to help lead his team with an answer back. That is exactly what happened. A hand off to the Cards RB led the team 64 yard run down to the end zone. This was one game shifter that fueled Calvert Hall with the confidence they could take over. Soon, the defense locked in, and the Cardinals were able to punch in another TD. On my opinion, (and I’ll confess MillerFlow is defense biased) Calvert Hall’s defense took over in the third and fourth quarters. This takes nothing away from the superb QB, excellent run game and awesome O-Line of the Hall. The defense just really locked in. Their quickness to the ball, forced QB pressures, sacks, and two interceptions made a HUGE statement. I was quite impressed with their adjustments in the second half. Overall, Calvert Hall looked great, and this win adds to the number of contenders rising in the MIAA A division. You had St. Mary’s win big, MSJ, McDonogh, and Loyola all looking good. The MLB Draft is coming soon, with festivities split across July 13-14 in Atlanta. The event opens the biggest weekend in baseball alongside the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby. This year, Maryland celebrates 80 years of producing top MLB talent. In 1965, Jim Spencer made history when the California Angels selected the first baseman with the 11th overall pick out of Andover High School, which is now North County High School. Spencer made his major league debut on Sept. 7, 1968, beginning a 15-year career. In 1978, he became the first Maryland high school draftee to win a World Series. 337 players have followed Spencer's lead from schools across the state. Two, Cal Ripken Jr. and Harold Baines, have made the Hall of Fame. Maryland high school draftees have combined for 37 All-Star appearances, 13 Silver Sluggers, nine Gold Gloves, two MVPs, a Rookie of the Year and seven World Series wins. The Chicago White Sox used their No.1 overall pick in 1977 on Harold Baines out of St. Michaels High School. He became the first and only player to be drafted from the school and the only top selection in state history. The White Sox had faith in the then-18-year-old after he hit .532 as a senior and became an All-American first baseman. Baines played for five teams, headlined by the White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles. He debuted on Opening Day in 1980 and dominated the decade, boasting the 5th most RBIs among American League players from 1980 to 1989. Baines is regarded as one of the most clutch players of all time. He is tied for the fourth-most walk-off home runs and the 10th-most grand slams in MLB history. Baines joined the Hall of Fame in 2019 as an inductee of the Today's Game Era Committee. In his induction speech, Baines gave credit to his Maryland upbringing. “From teachers to coaches to town residents who showed me both kindness and discipline, I thank you all for what you have done for me. I cannot ever express enough appreciation for St. Michaels. It still remains my home to this day,” Baines said. In 1993, the town of St. Michaels named Jan. 9 as Harold Baines Day. The White Sox retired his number 3 in honor of their franchise icon. Baines returned to Chicago as a bench coach in 2004 and finally helped bring a World Series back to the South Side in 2005. Most recently, the San Diego Padres selected Lamar King Jr. (Calvert Hall College High School 22) in the 4th round of the 2022 draft. San Diego has made two of the three most recent Maryland high school selections, joined by Jackson Merrill and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Peter Heubeck. King impressed scouts in his senior season with a .545 batting average and a 1.363 slugging percentage, according to MaxPreps. The catcher had been committed to Georgia Tech before the draft. He ultimately signed for full slot value at the 120th overall pick. King recently won the Minor League Player of the Month award for his June performance. The 21-year-old had a .408 batting average with a 1.084 OPS and 11 doubles in the month. MLB Pipeline ranks King as the Padres’ 29th-best prospect. King now has a chance to follow in his father, Lamar King Sr., a former NFL defensive end, and make it to the pros. The elder King played for Essex High School and the Seattle Seahawks drafted him in the first round of the 1999 NFL draft. In 2025, the legacy of Maryland players could continue with Long Reach High School's Aidan West. MLB lists the shortstop as a top 125 player in the draft class. West could make history for Long Reach as their first draftee and end a three-year drought for Maryland high school talent.

 This game was a game I wanted to see. My alma mater, my HS family takes on a school that has showed themselves friendly to MillerFlow. My family vs my friends!!!! Calvert Hall, my fam, vs Archbishop Spalding, my friends. Game started out with Calvert Hall scoring first, and Spalding answering back. And it looked like the game was going to be a back and forth scoring match. However, my friends established a 3-4pt lead which my family struggled to come back through out the game, even though they had some beautiful scores. Was a good matchup. BIG SHOUTS to my CARDINALS, keep striving and hunting. BIG SHOUTS to my CAVALIERS, excellent work guys and a great win!!! MUCH SUCCESS to the BOTH of you guys. 🥍 🥍 ON THE HUNT AGAIN WITH MY ALMA MATER Gilman vs Calvert Hall The weather was absolutely wonderful. Got right into the action as I missed the opening score by Gilman; it just happened so fast. I may be wrong, but these MIAA teams seem to go at a faster pace, so scoring quick appears to be essential. Also the 80 second shot clock could be a factor. Whatever the case, I am learning to keep the record button on a little longer. Calvert Hall answered back in few minutes later tying the game up. Then as second quarter began, the Hall began to spread their lead scoring three goals in a few minutes. Calvert Hall has something special, almost like the whole team is just in sync (on defense, midfield, and their attackers) especially against a very good Gilman team (Don’t sleep on Gilman!!!). SHOUTS to the goalies on BOTH teams. They put in a lot of work. MUCH LOVE and RESPECT to the GREYHOUNDS and CARDINALS. Keep shining and doing your thing. Arriving late, I pulled up to MFV’s high school alma mater, Calvert Hall for a varsity LAX banger!!! The undefeated Boys Latin Lakers versus the undefeated Calvert Hall Cardinals. Two really good LAX programs faced off, where the Hall held the early lead for pretty much the first half. The Lakers came back tying the game, but the Cardinals held on winning the game by 1 score in the 4th. This was definitely an epic battle. BIG SHOUTS to the BOYS LATIN LAKERS. As the Terps prepare to bounce back against the Northwestern Wildcats, we wanted to highlight a couple of local athletes who will be looking to slow down the rushing attack. #7 DL Tommy Akingbesote – (Charles Herbert Flowers) Even after receiving offers from a multitude of schools, including Texas A&M and Oklahoma, Tommy decided to remain home and committed to the University of Maryland in 2020. Scouts all over the country saw a raw player with limited experience that dominated high school competition using explosive athleticism and natural ability. He saw the field immediately as a freshman, and his playing time has steadily increased over the years. Tommy seems to be rounding out his skillset to match his natural talent, and he leads the defensive line in tackles so far in his senior season. #39 DL Daniel Owens - (Calvert Hall) A three star recruit out of Calvert Hall in 2021, Daniel was recognized on the MIAA all-conference team as a senior. Redshirting as a true freshman, he gained size and strength to play full time on the defensive line. Last Saturday University of Maryland football hosted Villanova, which gave us an opportunity to photograph former Maryland high school athletes who played for both teams. With Villanova University located in Pennsylvania, the school regularly looks to Maryland for talent. Here are a few of their standout players. #9 DB Ty Trinh - The football/track and field star earned a MIAA all-conference spot in both sports when he graduated from Calvert Hall in 2019. Ty progressed from making eight starts in 2021, to 10 in 2022, and finally started in all 13 games in 2023. In 13 games he had 46 tackles, three tackles for loss, and one interception, earning second-team CAA All-Conference team. He was named to the preseason All-Conference team to start this year and will be one of the Wildcats standout performers this season #24 RB David Avit – David graduated from Winston Churchill with his name etched in the state record books. His 2023 season made him the 2023 Montgomery County Offensive Player of the Year and the 2023 Maryland 4A Player of the Year. David finished with 30 touchdowns and set school records for season and career rushing yards. His high school accomplishments and work in the summer earned him playing time for Villanova as a true freshman. Comment a current college football player who starred at your high school! In game two of the MIAA Baseball A-Conference Championship series, the Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers played against the Calvert Hall College Cardinals. Calvert Hall entered the game down 1-0 in the series. Nathan Rodriguez started on the bump for Calvert Hall, with a 6-2 record on the season, while Spalding had their ace, Jake Yeager. The first inning was scoreless, with both pitchers showcasing their skills. In the bottom of the second inning, Calvert Hall took action. Brayden Wolf led off the inning with a one-hopper ground ball to the shortstop, reaching base with a single. Luke Kreiner followed up with a clutch triple to right center, driving in Wolf and giving Calvert Hall a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals kept the bats going in the third inning. Will Haacke popped up to shallow center and dropped in for a double with no outs. Michael Copenspire rips one into center field bringing Haacke home for a 2-0 lead. Travis Peitz hits a line drive in center for a single. Thomas Pilarski takes a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with two outs. Kreiner drew a walk to score another run, making it 3-0 in favor of Calvert Hall. The top of the 4th inning started with left fielder Theo Loughlin drawing a walk. Spalding hoped to retaliate with a single from Drew Emrich, but Rodriguez took charge and pitched a scoreless inning, escaping the jam. In the top of the 6th inning, freshman Ryder Sowa entered as the reliever. Bases were loaded with just one out. Sam Houchens hit a sacrifice fly, bringing in a run and putting Spalding on the board with a score of 3-1. Sowa remained calm in the final inning, getting Luna out with a pop fly and adding to his impressive 60 strikeouts with strikeouts against Inscore and Loughlin, securing the win. With one game each, the final winner at Joe Cannon Park at 4:30 PM will be crowned as the MIAA Baseball A Conference champion.

Calvert Hall’s Cameron Davis achieved the third fastest time in the 1600-meter race and was also part of the 4x800 relay team that set the state record in that event this season! On the Girls’ side the Eagles flew high as a meet record was set by Caroline Birdsall in the pole vault. Elise Cooper set her own state record in the 200-meter sprint. Both teams had comfortable victories amassing over 200 points. Congratulations also goes to the St Mary’s boys and John Carrol girls’ teams, who won their matchups in the B conference. A strong day one for the event held off a surging Saint Timothy’s girls’ team on day two for John Carroll. The same can be said for Saint Mary’s who held off second place Palotti by 14 points, battling until the last event. Stay in the zone to keep up with the great action across the state!

On Wednesday, the Calvert Hall Cardinals traveled to play the Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers and managed to come away with the win, 5-0. Calvert Hall’s pitcher was the star of the show pitching a complete game four hit shutout, but the offense also did a great job thanks to their patient approach at the plate. The first few innings were largely dominated by the pitchers, both teams traded hits in the first two innings but were unable to get enough men on base to produce runs. One thing that was noticeable through these innings was Spalding’s pitcher having to throw a lot of pitches due to getting into a lot of hitters counts. This led to a few pitches being hung over the plate but Calvert Hall players weren’t able to do much with them. This changed in the top of third inning however, as an infield single was immediately followed up with a triple that allowed the runner on first to jog home with ease. Cardinals hitters were unusually aggressive this inning but it worked in their favor, the next pitch after the rbi triple a pitch was smoked through the middle infield to bring the runner home and gave them two runs on just two pitches. After that third inning the game would progress quickly. Calvert Hall had a chance to extend their lead in the top of the fourth, but a failed safety squeeze halted a solid inning and put the bats back into the hands of the Cavaliers. They had a chance to put runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth but hit into a momentum killing double play. Spalding failed to properly execute with runners on base often in this contest, this can be seen as credit to Calvert Hall’s pitcher and their ability to pitch out of jams, but it also an indictment on the Cards and their failure to get runners home. Calvert Hall would back their pitcher up in the 5th, rallying from a double play to get two more runs home. This was largely thanks to Cardinals players being patient at the plate, as three hitters were walked this inning, the starter for Spalding was pulled in this inning, but the reliever would have similar issues when it came to spotting pitches. Calvert Hall would tack on one more run in the top of the sixth thanks to an rbi double, this run was one manufactured by the player, as they got on base thanks to an error and stole second a few pitches. With solid run support the Cardinals pitcher just had a few more outs to get and did not disappoint. A one two three bottom of the sixth was followed by a groundout, single, and double play to end the game and secure a 5-0 victory. While Calvert Hall’s pitcher dominated this game the hitters did a great job as well. This mostly came down to drawing out counts and making the pitchers have to earn every out they got. The series between these schools is currently split with Spalding winning their last contest 5-4. The Cardinals hope their refined hitting approach can lead to them breaking the deadlock on Friday, May 3, when Spalding travels to their house to play.
