1. #5 Rock Hill 26, #3 South Pointe 3 After entering the fall outside the top 25, the fifth-ranked Rock Hill Bearcats upset the No. 3 South Pointe Stallions 26-3 in a home game last Friday night. With over 1,000 fans in attendance, the top-five match got off to a slow start as both teams punted twice in a scoreless first quarter. Early in the second, the Bearcats intercepted a pass from South Pointe quarterback, but a roughing the passer penalty negated the pick. The Stallions took advantage of the miscue with a field goal, putting them ahead 3-0. Rock Hill’s defense quickly responded, forcing a South Pointe safety to put two on the board. Senior James Heckard hit a 37-yard field goal before the end of the half, putting the Bearcats ahead 5-3 at the break. Early in the third, Rock Hill scored their only offensive touchdown of the game as senior Kaiden Watkins punched it in from a yard out. The third quarter also saw Williams come away with a pick six, and later in the fourth, senior Myles Brooks had a pick six of his own, returning it from 80 yards out. The Bearcats’ defense held South Pointe off the board for the entire second half, winning the rivalry game for the first time since 2018 in a 26-3 final. Now 4-0 for the first time since 2009, will have a week off before facing Ridge View on Sept. 25. The Stallions fall to 2-1 and will have this week to breathe before a high stakes match against No. 1 Northwestern in week six.
