On Friday, March 21, the Pikesville Panthers traveled up I-83 to take on the Dulaney Lions in an opening day varsity baseball match. Before the regular season kicked off, Pikesville played four scrimmages, going an even 2-2 while Dulaney only played one, taking on Manchester Valley on March 13. Pikesville got off to a hot start in the game as Pikesville scored three runs with just one out in the top of the first, two of which came off a single into center field by senior Spencer Evans. Dulaney answered with one in the bottom half, but Pikesville put up an additional three in the top of the second. Evans picked up RBIs three and four in his second at bat with an infield single. However, after three walks and three singles in the bottom of the second inning, Dulaney took the lead after a six run inning, all earned. From there, the Panthers never regained the lead. Pikesville tied the game on a sacrifice fly out by Isaac Garonzik in the top of the fourth, but Dulaney scored two more in the bottom of the fifth. With a final score of 9-7, Dulaney improves to 1-0 and Pikesville drops to 0-1. Michael gets the win for the Lions, going 1 inning while giving up one hit and no runs, while Holaday gets tagged with the loss for Pikesville, going 2.1 innings, giving up three walks and one earned run while tallying two strikeouts. Pikesville moves on to a Saturday matchup at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute starting at noon while Dulaney looks ahead to a Saturday morning match up taking place in Carroll County as they take on the Westminster Owls at 11am.
