The Westminster High School Boys Lacrosse heads into the new season with a mix of hunger and confidence, determined to turn last year’s disappointment into a driving force. After a postseason run that didn’t go as far as they had hoped, the Owls are focused on starting this season strong and setting a new tone from the opening faceoff. A major advantage for Westminster this year is the number of returning players stepping back into the lineup. With key contributors coming back across the field, the team brings valuable experience and chemistry that should immediately show on game day. The offense returns players who understand how to move the ball efficiently, while the defense benefits from a unit that has already built trust and communication. That continuity gives the Owls a strong foundation as they look to build early-season momentum. Last season’s early exit from the postseason still lingers, but it has become motivation rather than frustration. Throughout the offseason, the team has put in the work—improving conditioning, sharpening skills, and focusing on playing a more disciplined and complete style of lacrosse. There’s a clear sense that this group learned from its shortcomings and is ready to respond in a big way. Leadership will be another key factor in Westminster’s success. With experienced players returning, the team has strong voices both on and off the field to keep everyone focused and accountable. Those leaders know what it takes to compete at a high level and are determined to push the team further than last year. As the season gets underway, Westminster will look to capitalize on its experience and start fast. In a competitive schedule, getting off to a strong start can make all the difference. If the Owls can stay consistent and play with the intensity they’ve shown in preparation, they have the potential to be a serious contender. This season isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about taking the next step. And with a talented, experienced roster and something to prove, Westminster boys lacrosse is ready to make its mark.

The Westminster High School Girls Lacrosse enters this season with something to prove—and plenty of reason for confidence. After a postseason run that fell short of expectations last year, the Owls are turning that disappointment into motivation as they look to start the new campaign on the right note. One of the biggest strengths for Westminster this season is experience. The roster is packed with returning players who saw meaningful minutes a year ago, giving the team a level of chemistry and understanding that can’t be taught overnight. From the midfield to the defensive end, the continuity allows the Owls to play faster, communicate better, and trust one another in high-pressure moments. That familiarity could be a key factor early in the season as they aim to build momentum right away. Last season ended sooner than the team had hoped, leaving a lingering sense of unfinished business. The early postseason exit wasn’t just a loss—it was a learning moment. Throughout the offseason, players have used that experience as fuel, focusing on improving fundamentals, conditioning, and mental toughness. There’s a clear sense that this group doesn’t just want to return to the playoffs—they want to make a deeper, more meaningful run. Leadership will also play a major role in Westminster’s success. With so many returners, the team benefits from athletes who understand the demands of a full season and the intensity of playoff lacrosse. Those veterans set the tone in practice and games alike, helping guide younger players while keeping the team locked in on its goals. As the season begins, all eyes will be on how quickly the Owls can put it all together. A strong start could set the tone for everything that follows, especially in a competitive schedule where every game matters. With experience, motivation, and a chip on their shoulder, Westminster is poised to make noise early. If the Owls can channel last year’s disappointment into consistent, focused play, this could be the season where everything clicks. And if that happens, don’t be surprised to see Westminster not only return to the postseason but go much further than before.

Fresh off of an undefeated state championship run in 2024, Urbana’s Boys Lacrosse team was set for yet another deep playoff push in 2025. Going into the season, senior midfielder Will McLeod believed that the group “would be able to win another championship… the only thing that could stop us from doing so was ourselves,”. The Hawks’ season began as everyone expected, undefeated. In the team’s first five games, the offense averaged over seventeen goals per game, while the defense surrendered fewer than three. Very few teams throughout the state would be able to contest this level of dominance. Urbana’s head coach, Gavin Donahue, credited the early success to the defense. “I think that one of our strong points is definitely our defense. I don’t think we really had any hole from our mid to LMS to our close defenseman and our goalie,” he explained. Despite the strong start, Urbana’s team was dealt their first loss in over two years, coming at the hands of the Bullis School in a 16-7 blowout. Just a few days later, the Hawks lost to their first MPSSAA opponent, the Kent Island Buccaneers, 9-7. Following the second loss, the team’s captains, including senior midfielder Brandon Sybrant, called a players-only meeting. In this meeting, Sybrant explained that “there was definitely a lot of frustration within the team. As a team, [they] couldn’t pull together a good practice that week and [they] had to end a practice early… the meeting opened everyone’s eyes on how we aren’t untouchable,”. This meeting had an immediate impact on the team’s success. Following the loss to Kent Island, Urbana, now with an unexpected 5-2 record, quickly turned their season back to how they planned. In their next game, the Hawks defeated the Sherwood Warriors by a 16-run margin. After that, the team proceeded to win every game throughout the remainder of the regular season, concluding with a pair of shutouts against 2A state quarterfinalist Hereford and 3A state runner-up Towson. In the team’s first three playoff games, the Hawks managed to outscore their opponents 64-7. Through the eyes of Coach Donahue, the state semi-final game against the second-seeded Walt Whitman Vikings was going to be “a higher level team than what we saw in the first three rounds of the playoffs,”. The match proved to be their closest since the 9-3 victory against Catonsville, but the Hawks did secure the victory, defeating Whitman 12-7. Despite the victory and the championship game birth, Brandon Sybrant was feeling uneasy after the game, explaining that “we had so many opportunities to score and we just couldn’t,”. Before the final game, Urbana’s preparation schedule consisted of several days solely dedicated to watching film. “We broke down our Whitman film… we watched just a game of Broadneck… then the last day we filmed our practice and broke that down,” described Coach Donahue. With this schedule, he and his team felt immensely prepared going into the final game. The entire game proceeded to be a defensive showdown. At halftime, Urbana led by just one. With the narrow lead, Coach Donahue’s message to the team was simple – “Trust the process and keep grinding.”. Despite the game being a stark contrast to how well the offense typically performed, the Hawks’ five goals wound up being enough. With a final score of 5-2, for the second consecutive season, the Urbana Hawks were crowned 4A boys lacrosse champions. With eleven seniors departing the team, Coach Donahue will be counting on his current junior class, consisting of sixteen athletes, as well as the rest of the 70% of this year’s team that will be back in 2026.

🥍 🥍 ROAD TO STEVENSON
CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH 2025 BOYS
Urbana vs Broadneck Another great rematch game at MPSSAA BOYS LAX States between two teams I love, the Urbana Hawks and the Broadneck Bruins. If you were expecting a high pound-for-poind scoring match, this was not the game.. It must be noted these were two top defensive teams in the state. They both specialized in keeping teams from scoring and their goal save rate was exception. I believe both have goals allowed around 3.0. So the anticipation for MFV was which team would be bullied into giving up points the . I expected a low score matchup.

And it was, although the Hawks did have a good lead before the Bruins scored their fist points. And although Broadneck held the Hawks from having a sizable spread, the Hawks still sealed the deal and won back-to-back state titles BIG LOVE to BROADNECK, as we are proud of you!!!n. You represented AA County well, and wish you much more success in the future. BIG CONGRATS to URBANA, proud you guys were able to have back-to-back championships. Keep striving for success and keep shining. Great season, and enjoy this Wonderfull moment.
