This week we will be highlighting Howard High and Oakland Mills, the two top track and field teams in Howard County. Both teams had great success on both the county and regional level. The boys could not be separated, with both programs tying for first place in the Howard County track championships. Oakland Mills took over the field events, winning three out of the six competitions. The Scorpions relied on the youth this season, and sophomore AJ York along with junior Keshon Tate rose to the occasion. On the track, junior Gabriel Murray showed out setting a personal record at the county championship and then beat it at state with a time of 37.91 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles. This was the second fastest time in this event for the entire state. AJ York set the stage by beating his county distance and finishing in first place in the high jump for both the county and state championships. A second-place finish in the state championship is a great foundation for a young team with plenty of room for improvement. The girls came up just 4 points short against Howard for the county title. Oakland Mills continued to excel in the field events, with the Scorpions again winning three out of the six competitions. Senior transfer Shania Staats earned first place in the long jump while junior Alicia Hall took first in the triple jump. These results carried over to the state championship. County high jump champion Valerie Ashamu could only be bested in the state championship by the number one high jump distance of the entire season, recorded by James Hubert Blake’s Sierra Swangin. Oakland Mills junior Janelle Codrington and freshman Codi Malott won first and second place in the 300-meter hurdles for the county title. But the freshman took over the event in the state races with Codi winning gold at the finals this time. With a productive offseason ahead, Oakland Mills is just one or two events away from potentially sweeping the region next year.
