Defending 2A champions Sparrows Point were unable to generate enough offensive pressure, and their defense ultimately broke down, conceding a single deciding goal in double overtime. The game was defined by strong defensive play from both teams, with Alix Bramble of the Mustangs recording 10 saves and Ally Foos of the Pointers making 11. For the Mustangs, the victory carried extra significance. Last year, they were eliminated by Sparrows Point in the same round, losing 3-0. JV Mustang coach Amital Karnado expressed her pride in the team’s growth over the course of the season. “We asked the players how much better they wanted to get,” Karnado said. “We reached the point where we were facing the same team in the same round, but in a different environment. We believed in each other, and we were ready.” The intensity was palpable throughout the game, with both teams disrupting each other's offensive strategies. As the game approached penalty kicks, a long ball over the top of the Sparrows Point defense found Lily Budelis. The sophomore held off a defender and slotted home the game-winning goal with just three minutes left in double overtime. The match could have gone either way. While Sparrows Point was devastated by the loss, their effort was unquestionable. The 1-0 loss mirrored their only other defeat earlier in the season against state finalists Towson. Success is in the program’s history with seven state title’s, and they were on the cusp of making it back to the championship. Next year the Pointers will have the extra motivation as they look to make as they may be facing the Mustangs for a third time on the way there.
