Last week, BCPS teams met at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Downtown Baltimore for the girls indoor track and field county competition. This article will highlight the top three finishers in each track event as well as the field events. As overall teams, Hereford placed first with 131 total points, followed by Woodlawn with 100 and Dulaney with 39. Congratulations to Hereford for their county championship, but here are the top three finishers in each result from the county competition: Individual Events: 55 Meter: Anjela Fitzhugh set the event's all-time record during this year's competition, finishing in 7.23 seconds to take home the gold medal. Junior Samantha Amauwa took silver, finishing in 7.26 while Woodlawn's Destiny Coleman brought home bronze in 7.34. 300 Meter: Destiny Coleman did win gold in the 300, finishing in 42.38, followed by Western Tech junior Fareedah Egbebi in 43.53 and Woodlawn senior Taylor Garrett in 43.96. 500 Meter: Laylah Ensor brought home a gold medal for Hereford, finishing in 1:19.23, while Maritzah Sampson from Woodlawn and Trinity Jordan from Franklin finished just five hundredths of a second apart in 1:21.74 and 1:21.79, respectively. 800 Meter: The Bulls sent two sophomores, Dempsey Nelson and Kylie Jacobson, to the top of the podium as the pair finished in 2:27.91 and 2:31.24. Catonsville senior Olivia Virago was just seven hundredths behind the silver medalist, completing the race in 2:31.31. 1600 Meter: Nelson also took home the top spot in the 1600m finishing five seconds ahead of the silver medalist, with a time of 5:21.55. Maren Blanks from Carver finished in 5:26.91 while Charlie Brill, another Hereford Bull, finished in 5:27.67. 3200 Meter: Dempsey Nelson in 11:54.77 and Charlie Brill in 12:02.69 were the event's top two finishers, closely followed by Maren Blanks in 12:03.6. 55 Meter Hurdles: Woodlawn athletes took all three podium places in their signature event, as senior Destiny Coleman took the top spot in 8.33 seconds, followed by junior Aurlani Irvin in 8.52 and senior Anjela Fitzhugh in 8.83. Team Events: 4x200 Meter Relay: Hereford's Laylah Ensor, Caden Bennis, Riley Boerner, and Olivia Clark took home gold in the first relay event, finishing in 1:52.93. Dulaney came in second, as Kennedi Johnson, Naya Edwards, Rachel Bowers, and Kaila Hill finished in 1:54.91. Western Tech took the bronze spot, as Fareedah Egbebi, Farrah Nunley, Chelsea Williams, and Makiyah Simms wrapped up the podium in 1:56.3. 4x400 Meter Relay: The Bulls sent the same team into the 4x400, who also took this event's top spot by just fifteen hundredths of a second, finishing in 4:20.52. Woodlawn's Leenehn Teah, Taylor Garrett, Anjela Fitzhugh, and Destiny Coleman were close behind at 4:20.67, while Eastern Tech took third in 4:36.07 with a team consisting of Cayden Wilson, Sybella Wass, Salome Ibenana, and Kailey Prisco. 4x800 Meter Relay: This event finished Hereford's clean sweep of the top prizes in relays, this team consisting of Isabella DeSantis, Juliette Verderaime, Ana Laura Tosi, and Kylie Jacobson who ran the 3200 total meters in 10:36.16. Franklin came in second, as Keveah Wallace, Teegan Clingan, Trinity Jordan, and Nora Tromble finished in 10:46.85, while Towson's Katherine Lohse, Elaina Razon-Fernandez, Lilyann Richard, and Eleanor Lohse ran it in 10:51.35. Field Events: Shot Put: Kimani Dennis, a senior from Dulaney, won the shotput in a landslide, throwing 36'8.5". Dundalk's' Cori Thompson and Parkville's Gabrielle Richards threw 29'8" and 29' respectively, taking the bronze and silver spots. High Jump: Eliza Fox from Hereford placed at the top, jumping 5'2", while Sparrows Point sophomore Julie Roberts and Woodlawn freshman Riley Streat both jumped 5' even, taking the other two podium places. Pole Vault: Aurlani Irvin won this event for Woodlawn, as the junior jumped 11'. Hereford athletes took the other two spots, as senior Maddie Drylie jumped 10'6", while sophomore Belinda Wines jumped an even 8'.

Freshman Milan MC Clark had a season high 17 points in the win over Western Tech.

Pikesville was led by Skylah Anderson with 19 pts, 3 rbs, 3 assts & 2 stls - NyJae Malik-El added 10 pts, 12 stls, & 5 assts - Mariah Jones-Bey added 16 pts, 3 assts & 2 stls in the win. Pikesville moved to a 7 & 0 record for the season.

With Baltimore County fall sports tryouts kicking off today, top volleyball programs are getting their athletes ready for the season to kick off in just a few weeks. With 2025 marking a dozen years since a BCPS team took home gold, with Dulaney's 2013 state championship victory being the most recent in the county, teams will look to make history this coming fall. From powerhouses from the past several seasons to underdogs looking to make a splash, here are my top 10 Baltimore County volleyball teams as we look ahead to the coming year: 1. Dulaney (2024: 15-0) The Lions reached the state playoffs last season, but were upset by Wootton, the future 3A runner-up. While this year’s starting six will be significantly different without five seniors from the 2024 season, MaxPreps still has Dulaney ranked top twelve in the state. This fall, the Lions will have several opponents that differ from last season, including Manchester Valley and private schools Mount de Sales and Roland Park. With several incoming call-ups from their one-loss JV team, Dulaney is likely in for another very strong season. 2. Catonsville (2024: 5-10) Despite having just a .333 win percentage, last year’s Comets’ wins came mostly against state playoff teams, including two wins against Perry Hall and two wins to Carver. Catonsville’s season ended with a loss to Baltimore County’s top team in the regional finals, but the season ahead looks very promising. In 2024, Catonsville only had two seniors, one of whom had never played the sport before that season. This season will be dominated by seniors, with six on the team, and new assistant coach Regan Amos, who played at Bowie State. The Comets are set to face many familiar opponents, including Hereford, Towson, Eastern Tech, and more. I am confident that the Comets will have a solid regular season and a better playoff run come later this fall. 3. Pikesville (14-0) Last year, the undefeated Panthers were eliminated in the regional quarterfinal, their first game, by Carver. This season, after losing just one senior who routinely played, Pikesville is set for a deep playoff run. Senior libero Lyla Moses and juniors Addisyn Jordan and Rilynn Aikens are positioned to lead the team to back-to-back unbeaten regular seasons, especially with Jordan and Aikens actively being recruited to play in college. 4. Perry Hall (2024: 4-10) Similar to Catonsville, the Gators had a rough regular season but had the deepest playoff run out of any BCPS team, losing to Broadneck in the state semifinals. This fall, Perry Hall will be playing without three of last year’s seniors, including all-county selections Abbie Znamirowski and Aspen Ganovski. Despite these losses, their JV team has several athletes, including 2024 JV MVP Aubrie Forish and unsung hero Cali Zink, both of whom are likely to impact the varsity squad in 2025. 5. Western Tech (2024: 10-2) The Wolverines were one of just two BCPS programs that had both their JV and varsity teams reach the ten-win mark. Western Tech will play without four seniors from the 2024 season, including Alex Jordan and Elms College commit Naiima Mack, both of whom were invited to the county’s all-senior showcase. In 2025, the Wolverines will rematch weakened Carver and Sparrows Point squads, which could ultimately propel them all the way, or at least closer, to an undefeated season. 6. Overlea (2024: 10-3) The Falcons were the other team where both squads reached the double-digit win mark, with ten on varsity and fourteen on JV. In 2024, Overlea was dealt a tough opponent to open the playoffs, as they faced and lost to Catonsville in the regional semifinals. This fall, they will look to get back atop Division III for the first time since the 2023 season. After losing three seniors, the Falcons are in a solid position to make a deep push this fall. 7. Eastern Tech (2024: 10-3) Two of Eastern Tech’s three losses came against the county’s top team. After a state semi-final elimination at the hands of the Centennial Eagles from Howard County, the Mavericks will be coming into this season with a strong revenge-seeking mindset. In 2025, the team will be facing several unfamiliar opponents, including Francis Scott Key from Carroll County, Baltimore City College, and Mercy High School from the IAAM. They will be facing several top teams from within BCPS, but I believe they will still have an outstanding season. 8. Hereford (2024: 11-4) Last season was the first since 2021 where the Bulls did not reach the state playoffs, as they were eliminated 3-1 in the regional final against Eastern Tech. This loss came as a surprise, considering Hereford had five senior starters, highlighted by senior showcase selectees Julia Ho and Brynn Nodar. The JV squad only played four games in 2024, and while they went undefeated, this sample size concerns me, especially considering that almost the entire starting six will change this season. Hereford looks to get back to the state playoffs this fall, but they may face struggles at the beginning of this year. 9. Carver (2024: 2-13) The Wildcats reached the state playoffs as the eighth seed, losing to Patterson Mill, but they reached that point with just a 2-13 regular season record. This year, the team will be overrun with new members as nine seniors will not be returning. What will help Carver is the fact that they dropped a division, meaning that their regular season consists of easier opponents compared to seasons in the past. With two regular-season games against their regional quarterfinal opponent, Pikesville, it may be tougher for the Wildcats to advance once the playoffs get underway. 10. Sparrows Point (2024: 11-1) This is another case of a top-tier team from Baltimore County that was led by a large senior class in 2024 that will have a tough time in 2025. The eleven-win team reached the state quarterfinals last year, but was also eliminated by Centennial. That eleven-win team last season graduated eleven seniors and had a JV team that only played four games. The Pointers have many easier opponents this year compared to last, so they are likely in for at least a solid regular season, but I anticipate that they will struggle mightily once they reach the playoffs.

Following a pair of first round byes, the Western Tech Wolverines, the three-seed in 1A North II, traveled to take on the two-seed Pikesville Panthers. Both teams came into the game with an 8-7 regular season record, and both teams most recent games were loses to the Randallstown Rams, with Pikesville losing 6-5 at home on May 1 and Western Tech losing 2-0 on the road on May 5. The Wolverines opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. With runners on second and third, following Jamie House reaching on a dropped third strike and Connor Brown singling, cleanup hitter Wyatt Lemmerman layed a bunt down the first base line and reached safely. In the bottom of the inning, Pikesville responded in a big way. Kairee Williams reached on a fielders choice and scored after the ball got into center field when stealing second and then out of play when he took third. Pikesville scored their second run when Richie Carlton walked with the bases loaded and Michael Payne reached on an error. After the Wolverines struck out three times in the top of the second, Isaac Garonzik drove in Pikesville fourth run on an RBI single in the bottom half. Both teams went down silently in the third, but the Wolverines scored in the fourth inning. Anthony Slaughter flew out to center field, scoring Wyatt Lemmerman, but Harlan Sammons was thrown out trying to take third on the play. In Pikesville's half, Spencer Evans singled into left field to drive in two runs. Isaac Garonzik singled into left field and both he and Evans took an extra ninety feet on an error by Wolverine left fielder Anthony Slaughter. Evans scored on a single by William Holaday and Garonzik scored on another by Richie Carlton. Holaday scored on a flyout by Michael Payne, but Richie Carlton was thrown out trying to take third on the play. Western Tech's Connor Brown and Wesley Henry scored in the top of the sixth on a double from Harlan Sammons, but that would end the scoring for Western Tech in this matchup. Pikesville tacked on some insurance in the bottom of the sixth. Karron Gamble drove in a run on a fielders choice, while Max Levin and Ian Davis picked up an RBI each as the duo got back-to-back singles. This game finished with the Panthers taking down the Wolverines with a 12-4 final. Michael Payne picked up the win for the Panthers, throwing 56 pitches in four innings, giving up four hits, one earned run, and six strikeouts. For the Wolverines, Travis Knipe was tagged with the loss, throwing 93 pitches in 3.1 innings, giving up six hits, five earned runs, four walks, and four strikeouts. While this marks the end of the road for Western Tech, the Panthers are slated to travel to Liberty High School in Carroll County to take on the 15-1 Lions in the Regional Championship next tuesday.

Cross country teams from across the county traveled to the Center for Maryland Agriculture for the county championship on October 18. Three seniors took the top three spots with Hereford's Sylvia Snider finishing in first wtih 20:04.82, Alexandra Lohse from Towson in second with 20:29.08, and Towson's Cecilia Van Lierop coming in third with 20:39.88. The Towson Generals took first place overall with 28 points, followed by the Hereford Bulls in second with 41 and the Dulaney Lions in third with 73. Teams from across Baltimore County traveled to the Center for Maryland Agriculture on October 18th for the county championship. In the men's 5K, Theodore Brown, a senior from Towson, took first place finishing in 16:47.21. Second place went to junior Oliver Katz from Dulaney with a time of 17:02.35. The bronze medal went to another Towson senior, John Fields, finishing in 17:10.96. The Towson Generals took first place with 31, followed by the Catonsville Comets with 61, and the Dulaney Lions with 63. On October 9th, Pikesville hosted teams from around the county in a cross country meet. In the 5k, the top three spots all went to runners from GW Carver with Junior Maren Blanks in 1st (22:13.95), Sophomore Anna Bibo in 2nd (22:50.69), and Junior Mia Hager in 3rd (24:37.89). GW Carver took first overall with 29 points, Hereford came in second with 38. and Sparrows took bronze with 54. Seven boys' teams from throughout the county traveled to Pikesville High School for a cross country meet on October 9th. In first place was Pikesville sophomore Eitan Beck with a time of 18:45.38, second place went to Loch Raven's senior Alexander Wanjiku finishing in 18:57.75. while bronze was claimed by another Loch Raven senior, John Wohlgemuth, crossing the finish line after 19:01.28. Chesapeake High School. The meet finished with Pikesville in 1st, Carver in 2nd, and Loch Raven in 3rd. Loch Raven High hosted 1A and 2A teams from across the county on September 18th. Carver's Maren Blanks took the top spot in the Women's 5K with a time of 21:58.9 followed by her teammate Anna Bibo with a time of 22:46.0. Sparrows Point took first place in this meet with 36 points followed by Carver with 21. Loch Raven High hosted ten men's cross-country teams from 1A and 2A schools throughout the county on September 18th. Chesapeake High's team came in first place with 300 points as reported on Athletic (link below) with Owings Mills in 2nd and Eastern Tech in 3rd. On September 9th, 2024, the Western Tech Wolverines traveled to Pikesville High to take on the Panthers. This game had a final score of 5-4 in favor of the Wolverines but was counted as a scrimmage as there were no official referees for this game.
