River Hill's Oliva Creighton and Gabby Shane scored 17 and 10 points respectively in the loss today to Stephen Decatur.
GAME WAS RESCHEDULED AND PLAYED JANUARY 10 AT 1:30 PM SCORE: WICOMICO 65--STEPHEN DECATUR 52
After 23 years, the #1 Stephen Decatur Seahawks managed to achieve the impossible, bringing home a state title. The Seahawks were up against the #2 Centennial Eagles. The Eagles had almost faced a loss to the Howard Lions in the regional final but managed to escape and continue to cruise easily after that into the state final game. To start the game, in the 10th minute Junior Cruz Henson received a ball from Senior Elijah Isett, controlling it in the box to tap it past the goalie putting the Seahawks up 1-0. Centennial responded 7 minutes later with their own goal from Sophomore Donovan Baker with the assist from Senior Ian Radtke. Going into halftime with the score 1-1, the game was still up for grabs. 7 minutes into the second half Henson strikes again for the brace with a slotted ball across the back giving Isett another assist putting the Seahawks up 2-1. In the 58th minute Senior Isaiah Rodriguez would strike from way out giving Centennials goalie Junior Zachary Herzberger no chance putting the Seahawks up 3-1. Rodriguez would deliver the dagger after following up on Senior Mason Edelman's shot putting the Seahawks up 4-1 with 17 minutes left of play. As the clock ticked down reality had finally struck: there was no hope for the Eagles. The Stephen Decatur Seahawks were going to be state champions. Congratulations Seahawks!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS4RcZEM5DA 🏈🏈 STATE CHAMP TOUR (Homecoming in Berlin) 🏆2024 MPSSAA 2A CHAMPS STEPHEN DECATURS SEAHAWKS 🆚 Bennett x Stephen Decatur A buddy of mine from the eastern shore told me rain was forecasted for the Berlin area, however when arriving at Stephen Decatur High School, there was not a drop of rain falling from the sky. Players were warming up, one mentioned about the undefeated South River being on the radar. Indicated to MFV, ever game is important to real football players. Focus must be on the goal, win the game. This mentality was definitely setting the stage for a good Bayside matchup. The James M. Bennett HS Clippers looked just as focused, desiring to take away a win on Decatur’s homecoming night. 1ST HALF (CLIPPERS - 0 SEAHAWKS - 24) The Clippers won the coin toss and deferred to the second. Crowd was delighted, and MFV hoped Decatur would run one back. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen but they were in good field position. Their drive started off like most, a run, a pass here and there. Their drive started Seahawks ended with a touchdown off a run from #8 Kyle Mumford, as he headed straight for the camera flashing his jersey number saying, “I’m him!!!!” The drive for the Clippers, was good. The run game was slowed for them but were able to get a first down off a short pass play. Wasn’t too long afterwards the Clippers QB then threw a pick 6 called back due to a block in the back. Still was exciting to witness. Special teams played a big role in adding a touchdown to the score after blocking a punt from Bennett to watch a DLine player take it in for 6. With a little confusion near the end of the half, Seahawks entered halftime with a 24-0 lead. 2ND HALF (CLIPPERS - 0 SEAHAWKS - 0) By the score, you can tell the second half didn’t prove to be much different. Decatur came out their locker room pumped to finish the game. With a short kick to the Clippers, suspended their drive marching right down the field adding another TD by Mumford, who was living up to his jersey flash. This brought about the activation of the mercy rule and now the game was on a running clock. The Seahawks sealed the victory, 38-0 looking forward to a big match vs. Easton High School. In Stephen Decatur fashion, a fireworks show was on display. I really enjoyed seeing that and the players stats being flashed across the big screen. How could you not love Bayside athletic competitions? This was awesome. TO BENNETT, covering you for the first time, I believe you wanted a better outcome. You guys are a solid team though. You have some amazing weapons in your arsenal and you fought to the very end. I was encouraged by your great poise and good sportsmanship. Keep working, keep grinding!!! Keep listening to your leaders!!! TO DECATUR, you always have a great display of football every time we’ve covered you. Always amazed at how with different squads each year, your coaching excellence seems to reign supreme. You have done a great job in developing some superior athletes. The state quarter-finals were the farthest that the Stephen Decatur Seahawks’ Boys Varsity Lacrosse team reached in 2024. Following a first-round upset handed to them by the seventh seed, the Kent Island Buccaneers, a top 2A program, had high hopes going into this season. With nine total seniors leading the team, athletes, coaches, and fans all felt an imminent playoff run coming by May. Decatur opened the season with two games on the road against the Kent County Trojans and the North Dorchester Eagles, dominating 20-0 in the first game and 28-0 in the second. Head coach Hoffy Hoffman described the team atmosphere as “electric” with clear dominance on display. However, in game three, the Seahawks faced their first challenge of the year, as they matched up against Kent Island for a regular-season showdown. Going into the game, Coach Hoffman was well aware that they were in a long drought of not beating the Buccaneers, but explained that the team was “comfortable despite some unfortunate scratches before the game”. After the two-hour-long trip to take on the Buccaneers on the road, Stephen Decatur was defeated 14-13. Despite the loss, Coach Hoffman was proud of the way that his team played, explaining that he would “much rather lose early in the regular season instead of near or in the playoffs.” After this tough defeat on the road, the Seahawks continued to dominate every team in their path. In the eight regular-season contests after the loss to Kent Island, Stephen Decatur averaged just under twenty points per game while giving up just three. Coach Hoffman gave lots of credit to junior goalkeeper Declan Horan, defensive coordinator Tyler Workman, and John Dodson, the goalie coach. By the end of the regular season, Decatur finished as the overall third-ranked team in the 2A classification, finishing the season 11-1. After defeating Parkside High 15-5 in the regional championship, the Seahawks returned to the state quarterfinals, where they were eliminated last season. Unlike last season, in the first round of the playoffs, Decatur took down the Hereford Bulls 11-5, then dominated the second-seeded Huntingtown Hurricanes 17-6. After those three playoff games, the Seahawks found themselves heading to the state championship against their Achilles heel in Kent Island. After battling to their closest loss in years, Coach Hoffman felt like “we were a team that could run with Kent Island,” and they made “very few changes” going into the championship game. Despite the Seahawks’ confidence before the opening face-off, Kent Island got off to a hot start, leading 7-2 at halftime. The deficit caused a bad vibe in the locker room, but Coach Hoffman’s message was to “get back out there and play our game”, noting that the whole team was nervous throughout the first half. Despite it all, the Seahawks were unable to come back, and Kent Island took down Decatur by one point once again, taking the championship 13-12. With this game being the end of the road for Decatur’s nine seniors, this season’s fourteen juniors will be in a strong position to make another deep run on the Road to Stevenson in 2026. Despite the season ending in a less-than-ideal fashion, the team’s successes did not end with reaching the state championship game. In early June, during an awards ceremony in Annapolis, Ashton March, a junior attack for the Seahawks, was awarded the C. Markland Kelly Award, honoring the “best lacrosse player in the state of Maryland” according to the Maryland State Lacrosse Coaches Association. Additionally, Coach Hoffman was awarded the 2025 MPSSAA Coach of the Year, recognizing his work leading Decatur’s dominant season.
With the game tied 1-1 in the 4th, they broke away from Stephen Decatur in the 6th and never looked back — clinching the win 3-2! 🔥💪🥎
🥍 🥍 ROAD TO STEVENSON: “BATTLE OF THE BAYSIDE” MPSSAA 2A BOYS LAX CHAMPIONSHIP (1) Kent Island vs (3) Stephen Decatur This game turned out to be a thriller. Two teams I absolutely love came to war. With much anticipation, both teams’ fans filled Mustang Stadium for epic Bayside battle. The Kent Island Buccaneers looked to finish their season undefeated while the Stephen Decatur Seahawks sought to bring them down after only losing to them earlier in the season. That game too was a nail biter. Well, starting out both teams put points on the board but then Kent Island began to pull away. Then, second half, a comeback arose with the Seahawks. Game got tied, however in the end, Buccaneers sealed the deal before the of the 4th taking the title of MPSSAA 2A BOYS LAX CHAMPS. CONGRATULATIONS to you BUCCANEERS. PROUD OF YOU and what you have accomplished. You came back this year and conquered your dreams. BIG SHOUTS TO MY BEACH BOYS. I know it’s not the outcome you’d like however you guys played a heck of a game. So proud.
