The Mustangs (1-0)captured their first victory of the season in their opening game with a hard fall road victory 62-53 at Southern. Junior Keon Scott led the way scoring 21 pts, 6 assists and 5 rebounds, while fellow seniors Arouna Soumaoro chipped in with 13 points & 8 rebounds and Jayvon Thomas had 13 points & 4 rebounds. The Mustangs next play tomorrow morning at 10:30am vs Loyola of Blakefield in the Xavian Classic at Good Counsel High School.

Southern pulled off a thrilling last-second victory over Severn Run. Huntyr Marks led the way for Southern with 12 points, while La’Ren Watkins chipped in 8. J. Acree was the standout for Severn Run, scoring 19 points. Southern will continue its momentum when it hosts Indian Creek on Monday.

MPSSAA Lacrosse Championships are in full swing with Wednesday’s slate of games featuring two teams from the same school winning titles and an exciting back-and-forth to end the night. The day started with the Fallston Cougars playing the Liberty Lions for the Class 1A state title, winning 15-2. The game was not a close affair as Fallston was able to get whatever it wanted on offense while shutting down Liberty’s offense just by how much possession they held. Fallston got many of its shots in either by getting into offensive sets behind goal, quick pass and moves, or isolating defenders in order to set up space for a shot. Liberty tried to respond to this by doing things such as swarming attackers when it caught the ball, or face guarding so certain players couldn’t get involved in the offense but it didn’t change much. Whenever one game plan broke apart, the Cougars would go to another in order to get another player open. No one player got this victory, it was a team effort that allowed this group to win their second straight state title. Liberty shouldn’t be too upset about this result as Fallston has a group full of experienced players who have been to the state finals for four straight years now, while Liberty has a young group of players who weren’t expected to make it this far. “This was our first time here,” said Liberty coach Steve Fabian. “Our players were overwhelmed by Fallston but we will be back here”. The Cougars were the better team today, but Liberty stunned a lot of people by making it as far as they did.Their team will be back next year hungry for a chance to rectify their mistakes and come out victorious. The next game would feature the Fallston girls lacrosse team playing the Southern Bulldogs, which ended in the Cougars’ favor, 14-7. Fallston had a similar game plan to its male counterparts, relying on quick isolations, passes and moves, and an aggressive possession based system to score a slew of goals. But this game was more interesting in the previous due to Southern being able to get into advantageous positions and drawing fouls. These fouls got Fallston in big trouble as they had to play a girl down for most of the second half due to accumulating too many yellow cards. This meant that Southern got a lot of penalties to take, three of these were in the third and swung momentum in favor of the Bulldogs. However Fallston were not so easily rattled, a yellow card on Southern gave the girls a chance to secure their lead, two goals during this brief period swung the pendulum back in Fallstons direction. Some sloppy play made this game closer than it was projected to be, but by the final whistle the result was well in hand and the girls were able to celebrate bringing the second state title of the day back to Fallston. Southern battled hard to even get this far though, as the 8th seed in the playoffs and had to play through each and every round to get this far, “It makes you more fearless” was what Southern coach Cortney Yeatman. “We just have to go out there and do it. We’re here and we have to compete… It feels like **** now but it was great to experience it with them”. Fallston will be celebrating an amazing season of lacrosse and the girls will be aiming for a repeat next season to match the boys, while Southern will have the chance to recover after a grueling run that just came up short, however the Bulldogs can hold their heads high; as just getting this far as the last seed in the playoffs is an accomplishment to be proud of. The final game was the most competitive, as it featured the Hereford Bulls and the Glenelg Gladiators playing in the Class 2A final. The Gladiators were able to win, 10-7, thanks to making goals at the right moments and making adjustments to their gameplan. The first quarter started with Glenelg dominating largely thanks to No. 2 Tim Lannarino, who had a hat trick a little over midway through the first. This was done in a simple manner, the Gladiators got into isolation positions (mostly behind the goal), beat their defender and scored. This individual based approach would come back to bite the Gladiators, as Hereford would get into a zone defense for the rest of the contest to make sure that if a player was beaten there would be others who could slot into position. This stymied a lot of Glenelg's offense, they could not create the easy chances anymore while Hereford was able to chip away at the game thanks to getting into shooting positions through quick passes and screens on and off the ball and rifling shots home. The half ended 6-4 with momentum on the Bulls side, but they were unable to take advantage of their great defense and turn it into consistent offensive production. This resulted in a back and forth where Hereford would gain momentum or score thanks to a quick counter or a more refined offense where players were now moving and cutting off the ball. a By the fourth quarter Hereford were down three with seven minutes left with the chance to tie or even win the game. Unfortunately they were unable to do anything with that time, crucial turnovers, and missed shots sealed the Bulls’ fate, and gave the Gladiators a state title to take back home. Hereford had their chances to win the game, but were simply unable to do enough to win, and the players know this as well. “Making it a one goal game two or three times we felt confident and then they were able to make a stop or put another on us” stated Hereford captain Brenden Kittner after the game. Hereford will come back next season stronger while Glenelg will be preparing to defend its state title.

Fallston boys and girls go back-to-back today, with their girls winning their championship game versus Southern 14-7. Multiple cards were shown to both teams, with Southern showing determination and an unwillingness to relent while being down 11-3 in the third. Southern cut the lead to 11-7 by the beginning of the fourth, but the Cougars rallied around head coach Maddie Palko and shutout the Bulldogs in the fourth. A great game and congratulations to the Cougars!

Fallston is off to a great start in their double champion chase, as the girls are up 8-3 at half. 7 different Cougars have scored in their high-tempo short passing game.

The 1A- 4A finals kicked off yesterday with exciting action throughout the evening. Here is a recap of the action: Glenelg executed their gameplan to perfection, passing the ball around the goal and waiting for a great shot instead of a good one. All the Glenelg attackers and midfielders either scored or assisted as the ball was shared in a great display of team chemistry and system. Their 17-1 record as a team was no fluke, and they proved that against a tough Queen Anne’s team that gave all-out effort even in the fourth quarter. The Severna Park Falcons met the Towson Generals in the first chance for Severna Park to take both 3A Titles. Timmy Sullivan opened the scoring with 2 goals for Severna Park within 1 minute in the first, but Towson responded with their own 2 a minute after that via Hudson Arrup. Great defense led to low percentage shots and a low-scoring game. After a 5-4 halftime lead, 2 Severna Park goals extended the lead in the opening of the third, but 2 goals at the end of the third by Towson closed the lead back to one. Severna Park dominated possession in the fourth, only allowing a few chances for Towson, that saw the Generals unable to overcome the eventual 2 goal lead. Both goalies played fantastically, making strong and acrobatic saves throughout. The Dulaney High School girls’ team had a great run to the championship, winning 10 games in a row and beating previously undefeated Sherwood by 1 goal in the state tournament. They got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first, but the Severna Park defense turned it on and forced turnovers allowing for quick counterattacks that put pressure on the Dulaney defense. The Severna Park girls played an even stronger keep-away game in the fourth than the boys, refusing to shoot even when the goalie left to net to shave time off the clock. Two late goals at the end was icing on the cake as both Severna Park teams came away with tough victories. There is an opportunity to have 4 double champion schools by the end of the championship slate. In the 1A finals, Fallston High School’s boys and girls will face Liberty High and Southern High respectively. The Fallston and Southern matchup is the only game in this group to future to teams ranked below a 4 seed for the state tournament. The Glenelg boys’ team will be looking to match the girls as they will be taking on the Hereford team that last lost by only one goal against 4A finalist Urbana High.
