Patuxent High completed a stunning 35–28 comeback victory over Fort Hill in the MPSSAA 1A state championship. Down 21 late in the second quarter, the Panthers rallied behind a dominant defense to end Fort Hill’s four-year title run.

The Cougars kicked off the scoring in the first quarter and continued to work together to finish in the circle. After 4 quarters of hockey, the game was tied 3-3 and headed into overtime! The first overtime resulted in neither team scoring so another overtime was coming up, both teams had opportunities but after goalie Auggie McCarthy came up huge with a penalty stroke save, the momentum was all there for Fallston! They moved the ball into the offensive circle and were awarded a corner! That was all the Cougars needed, they were able to finish and netted the game winner with Layla King passing to Camryn Dauphinas on the post behind the goalie! -Coach Jackie Cummings
🏈🏈 STATE CHAMP TOUR (2ND STOP) 🆚 Northern x Patuxent PATUXENT PANTHERS 🏆 2A/1A CHAMPS 📍 Lusby, Maryland GAME RECAP The evening sunshine was bright. The weather was perfect for some Friday Night Football, Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) style. This was the second stop on our STATE CHAMP TOUR, to see the 2A/1A MPSSAA State Champions, the Patuxent High School Panthers. They have moved currently to Class 1A, but I recall their 2024 State Champ victory like it was yesterday. They faced the Dunbar Poets, who were seeking their 14th state title and 4th straight in a row. However the energy the Panthers came in with was amazing. All that season, they collaborated with us, hinting at their run for the title. It showed in that game as they held the Poets to only 6 points, after Dunbar had pretty much annihilated majority of their opponents. The game was really 4 quarters of HARD HITTING defense. They were able to secure a state win, since their last victory in 2015. The stage was set for a Calvert County war. Northern was looking to bounce back from their loss last week on our first stop of the tour against North Point. It looked fresh in their minds. The planned on not letting Patuxent get the advantage. What happened? 1ST HALF - Since the Northern won the coin toss, they elected to receive the kickoff in the first half of play. You could see they wanted to get this game rolling. Their first drive down the field didn’t produce any points. Patuxent answered back moving down the field and scored off a 3rd down QB keeper right up in the end zone. This looked to set the tone for them. However, it wasn’t long, Northern marched down adding 7 points to the board. This back and forth went on for both quarters. Patuxent’s QB was launching passes that their receivers went the distance. Then after each big play, the Patriots would answer. And the first half ended in a tie, 21-21. I heard that this kind of competitiveness is classic SMAC football. 2ND HALF - This round of competition proved to be no different from the first. Patuxent this time failed to put points on the board on their first drive and it was Northern who gained the advantage, making the score 21-28. Now, Patuxent answered back in like fashion. With time left in the fourth quarter, they took the lead with a field goal, 31-28. Northern game down the field a time later and attempted a field goal but lost control of the football, to where Pathers recovered. Looked like the game was in the hands of the Patuxent Panthers, but with less than a minute left in the 4th, the Patriots marched back down, and with 3 seconds remaining tied with a field goal, sending this state champ tour in to overtime. OVERTIME - One of the referees informed me of another SMAC game that ended in OT. I was getting the impression this is a norm for them. With their hard work and service, I’m sure they were ready to get things over with. Northern won the coin toss and the ball was placed on the 10 yard line. Both teams were to be given a chance at scoring. If the Patriots scored a TD, the Panthers would need to answer with the same. On third down, Patuxent got an interception which now gave them the opportunity to either score o TD or kick for 3. On 4th down, their QB/Kicker (a man with many hats) landed the ball right between the uprights to secure the Patuxent Panthers victory. Let me say, BOTH of these teams studied each other well. NORTHERN, you guys didn’t get the outcome you wanted but you guys played some good football. I think this is only going to motivate you more to do even better. Keep shining and grinding, you guys definitely put in the hard work. Your coaches will steer you in the right direction. PATUXENT PANTHERS, first off thank you for your hospitality. YOU guys have achieved a goal getting over a losing streak. PROUD of the hard work and diligence you showed out on that field. You didn’t give up and trusted in one another to make the right decisions. It paid off. To BOTH, much success to you and know the season continues on next week. Go hard and play hard. Summer is almost over, which means fall sports are ahead of us. As football season is approaching within the next month, the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) is preparing for another season ahead. So, let’s see how the top ten teams fare this season. 1. North Point (12-2) Last year, the Eagles won the 4A/3A state title. Their 21-20 overtime win against Mergenthaler Vo-Tech helped lift them to victory, and they are looking to dominate again this season. This was their second state title within three years. 2.Westlake (10-3) The Wolverines finished atop of the SMAC standings last year. According to MaxPreps, William Drakeford Jr. was second in passing yards within SMAC; however, the incoming senior has transferred to Quince Orchard. But have no fear, the Wolverines' running back David Nnabuko will return for another season. 3. Patuxent (14-0) The Panthers made history in the 2A/1A state championship last season, stopping Dunbar from winning four straight championships in their 8-6 win. Patuxent went 14-0 on the year, and averaged 46 points a game. They look to continue their success in their program with another strong season ahead. 4. Calvert (6-5) Multiple players on offense have shown to be at the top of the leaderboard for their position. Senior quarterback Jordan Johnson led SMAC in passing yards with 1,530, while running back Andrew Douglass and wide receiver Tristan Thomas racked up top-five stats in rushing yards and receiving yards. 5. St. Charles (5-6) Statistically wise, St. Charles had multiple players contributing to their team last season. Quarterback Jayden Wills, along with Elijah Jones, will be returning for the Spartans. Despite their record, within their region, they recorded a 0.667 win percentage. St. Charles also made the 3A Maryland High School Football Playoffs and advanced to the second round after beating Chesapeake. 6. Huntingtown (10-3) Huntingtown, like North Point and Patuxent, competed in the 2A state championship, but fell to Stephen Decatur 13-12. In the regular season, they were on a six-game win streak. They will have wide receiver and free safety Brody Whittington return for them, who averaged 25 yards a game. 7. Northern (7-5) Northern began its season last year against strong opponents, such as Westlake. In the middle of the season, they were able to go on a four-game win streak. They were able to advance to the quarterfinals in the 3A Maryland High School Football Playoff bracket, but fell to Arundel 14-21. 8. Leonardtown (8-5) Before the 2024-2025 season, the Raiders saw improvements within their program. They went from a 6-6 record to an 8-5 record. They were able to secure top wins against North Point and St. Charles early last season. However, they are losing their top receiver Grady Mason, and running back Zach Meade. 9. Lackey (6-5) Lackey’s overall record of 6-5 has remained relatively stagnant over the past three years. Although they placed fifth within their region, there is still pressure to have some sort of improvement this upcoming season. 10. Great Mills (6-5) Last year, Great Mills went on a four-game win streak before losing their last game of the season. However, their losses come at the hands of top teams such as North Point and Patuxent.
The Patuxent Panthers secured their first-ever state title with a 8-6 victory over Dunbar. The game, marked by a dominant defensive performance, was defined by a pivotal first-quarter response by senior Evan Blouir, connecting with fellow senior Keiden Gutierrez. After Dunbar rushed for a touchdown, Blouir’s impressive 71-yard touchdown pass to Gutierrez and the resulting two-point conversion was the only score for the remainder of the game. Patuxent’s defense stole the show, repeatedly denying Dunbar a chance to reach the endzone. The Poets were turned away three times inside the Panthers' 10-yard line and committed two turnovers, preventing any scoring opportunities. Dunbar, chasing their fourth consecutive state title, could not break through Patuxent's relentless defense. With grit and determination, the Panthers held their ground, refusing to let their perfect season slip away.

Tonight, two Calvert County contenders, Patuxent and Huntingtown, will face off, each aiming to build momentum for a state championship run. Both teams come into the game with 3-0 records. Last year, Patuxent narrowly missed a shot at the title, falling to Dunbar by just one possession in the semifinals, while Huntingtown lost to Stephen Decatur in their championship game. This season, both teams haveshown dominant defenses, allowing a combined total of only 32 points in their six games. Fans can expect a low-scoring game, where every point counts. Meanwhile, don’t overlook Leonardtown, who has made headlines by defeating state contenders North Point in their opening week, reversing a significant loss from the previous season.
