The Fields at Renaissance Park are now home to a lighted, artificial turf field, featuring a large scoreboard and seating for 150 fans. On July 8, 2024, County Executive John Olszewski was joined by project partners from the State of Maryland’s Department of Housing and Community Development, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks, Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce and Our Lady of Mount Carmel School to officially open the new $2.3 million dollar facility, appropriately named “Essex Field.” The completion of the project marks the culmination of 6 years of work by private and public partners to bring the landmark project to Essex. In 2017, the Eastern Baltimore County Task Force, led by Sharon Kihn, Director of the Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce, facilitated Essex’s designation as a Maryland Sustainable Community. This designation allowed local groups to apply for State funds targeted toward revitalization and reinvestment. Our Lady of Mount Carmel School applied for funds through the Chamber and was granted $125,000 for a Ball Field Project. By the summer of 2020, two additional grants from the Department of Housing and Community Development raised the total for the Ball Field to $625,000. Working closely with DHCD on similar field projects throughout Maryland, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation saw this as a great opportunity to build their first field in Baltimore County. To grow the number of community partners supporting the project, the location of the field was shifted from Mount Carmel School to the adjacent Baltimore County Park, Renaissance Park. The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation then worked closely with DHCD and Baltimore County to source funding for the project's completion. In total the joint funding between DHCD and County Executive Olszewski’s administration totaled $2.3 Million. Construction on the field, which can be seen from both Eastern and Old Eastern Avenues, began in early February 2024. By late May, the turf was laid, bleachers constructed, and the lights and scoreboard were installed. This summer local Essex-Stembridge Rec & Park programs, as well as, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School will begin using Essex Field to prepare for their fall programs. Article written by: Alex Brylske
