The Northern Patriots and Huntingtown Canes faced off last Saturday afternoon in the MPSSAA 2A State Championship for Football. Northern had a slow finish and start but a dominant game in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Huntingtown had an impressive offence with a strong drive near the end of the game to stomp out the Northern comeback. Overall, this was an amazing game to watch and photograph. Northern and Huntingtown both had three touchdowns throughout the game. Aswell as each team having an interception. Huntingtown’s Drive with around 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter is what led them to victory. Joshua Walter of HHS ran for an impressive 82 yard touchdown to end this drive. Dylan Allafi was NHS’s standout player with 35 rushes for 182 yards. He racked up 3 touchdowns on an average of 5.1 yards per rush. For HHS, Gabriel Copeland was the standout player. He had 2 touchdown rushes with a 5.1 average as well. Both teams had a weak passing game with 0 total touchdowns through the air. Both teams also had problems containing the rushing game. Huntingtown was the winner of this great matchup. Two great teams which will definitely see more playoff success in the near future.

🏈🏈 STATE CHAMP TOUR (2ND STOP) 🆚 Northern x Patuxent PATUXENT PANTHERS 🏆 2A/1A CHAMPS 📍 Lusby, Maryland GAME RECAP The evening sunshine was bright. The weather was perfect for some Friday Night Football, Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) style. This was the second stop on our STATE CHAMP TOUR, to see the 2A/1A MPSSAA State Champions, the Patuxent High School Panthers. They have moved currently to Class 1A, but I recall their 2024 State Champ victory like it was yesterday. They faced the Dunbar Poets, who were seeking their 14th state title and 4th straight in a row. However the energy the Panthers came in with was amazing. All that season, they collaborated with us, hinting at their run for the title. It showed in that game as they held the Poets to only 6 points, after Dunbar had pretty much annihilated majority of their opponents. The game was really 4 quarters of HARD HITTING defense. They were able to secure a state win, since their last victory in 2015. The stage was set for a Calvert County war. Northern was looking to bounce back from their loss last week on our first stop of the tour against North Point. It looked fresh in their minds. The planned on not letting Patuxent get the advantage. What happened? 1ST HALF - Since the Northern won the coin toss, they elected to receive the kickoff in the first half of play. You could see they wanted to get this game rolling. Their first drive down the field didn’t produce any points. Patuxent answered back moving down the field and scored off a 3rd down QB keeper right up in the end zone. This looked to set the tone for them. However, it wasn’t long, Northern marched down adding 7 points to the board. This back and forth went on for both quarters. Patuxent’s QB was launching passes that their receivers went the distance. Then after each big play, the Patriots would answer. And the first half ended in a tie, 21-21. I heard that this kind of competitiveness is classic SMAC football. 2ND HALF - This round of competition proved to be no different from the first. Patuxent this time failed to put points on the board on their first drive and it was Northern who gained the advantage, making the score 21-28. Now, Patuxent answered back in like fashion. With time left in the fourth quarter, they took the lead with a field goal, 31-28. Northern game down the field a time later and attempted a field goal but lost control of the football, to where Pathers recovered. Looked like the game was in the hands of the Patuxent Panthers, but with less than a minute left in the 4th, the Patriots marched back down, and with 3 seconds remaining tied with a field goal, sending this state champ tour in to overtime. OVERTIME - One of the referees informed me of another SMAC game that ended in OT. I was getting the impression this is a norm for them. With their hard work and service, I’m sure they were ready to get things over with. Northern won the coin toss and the ball was placed on the 10 yard line. Both teams were to be given a chance at scoring. If the Patriots scored a TD, the Panthers would need to answer with the same. On third down, Patuxent got an interception which now gave them the opportunity to either score o TD or kick for 3. On 4th down, their QB/Kicker (a man with many hats) landed the ball right between the uprights to secure the Patuxent Panthers victory. Let me say, BOTH of these teams studied each other well. NORTHERN, you guys didn’t get the outcome you wanted but you guys played some good football. I think this is only going to motivate you more to do even better. Keep shining and grinding, you guys definitely put in the hard work. Your coaches will steer you in the right direction. PATUXENT PANTHERS, first off thank you for your hospitality. YOU guys have achieved a goal getting over a losing streak. PROUD of the hard work and diligence you showed out on that field. You didn’t give up and trusted in one another to make the right decisions. It paid off. To BOTH, much success to you and know the season continues on next week. Go hard and play hard. 🏈🏈 STATE CHAMP TOUR 🥇North Point Eagles - 2024 MPSSAA 4A/3A CHAMPS 🆚 Northern x North Point Varsity Football The traffic was ridiculous, as what was really supposed to be a 1hr & 15 minute drive, turned in to a two hour fiasco. From avoiding accidents to bumper to bumper backups, MFV was trying to make it early for his first stop on the 2024 State Champ Tour. Once arriving in Waldorf, I would soon discover the travel was well worth it. Teams in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) were about to send a good message about their quality of football. To start off I reminisced about the 2024 4A/3A MPSSAA STATE TOURNAMENT and how SUPER cold it was out there. North Point pulled off an immaculate win by stopping the Mervo Mustangs from taking the lead by a 2pt-Conversion in overtime. The Eagles rushed the field emerging once again as STATE CHAMPS. The weather was much nicer this day, though but a battle was a brewing. North Point entered this competition 2-0, shutting out Maurice McDonough 34-0 and beating the 2A/1A champs, Patuxent Panthers 28-7. You could see it in them that they were all about continuing that streak to a 3-0. However, the Northern Patriots were standing in the way, as they too were 2-0. The stage was set for the first stop of the tour and someone was leaving the field, 2-1. Let’s see how it played out!!!! 1ST QTR - The messy quarter is what I like to call it. Northern received the kickoff. It went into the end zone as the referee whistled touchback. The first drive for Northern was intense; intense because the Eagles were getting fast to the ball. Patriots soon punted and on a big return put the Eagles in excellent scoring range. North Point put its first points on the board. 2ND QTR - The Patriots dominated this quarter scoring all its points here. The first was directly at the start from a deep pass to the wide receiver, BOOM, touchdown!!!! The next two came from the running back, one from a nice distance out and the other on a goal line down. It was sending a clear message to the Eagles: Northern was here to play. North Point was able to add more when their RB broke free for a long distance break away TD. Nobody was catching him, but the Eagles were down 19-13. 3RD & 4TH QTRS - The Eagles didn’t even go back to their locker room. Coach set them on a little hill next to the bleachers looking like they were being given a life-changing sermon. Northern came out ready and energy on high spirits. North Point, appeared to be really contemplating what had been said to them. And it paid off. North Point was able to add two end zone visits, this time through the air. The plays had me screaming and hollering like I was a North Point student. The Eagles protected their lead and walked away undefeated. This game was saturated with the essence of SMAC football. BOTH TEAMS have excellent O Lines, quick to the ball, pound the run game, and just are well disciplined and coached. Northern, I loved your grind and relentless effort to win. You are not a team anyone should toy with. There’s no question as to why we consistently see you making deep playoff runs. North Point Eagles, I feel you’ve overlooked. We’ve missed it. Apologies from MillerFlow, for not taking notice sooner to the great team you have. I look forward to making the drive down to see you again. BOTH of y’all proved yourselves. Leonardtown was down 6 to 4 in the top of the seventh. Lindsay Hunter hit a three run home run to take the lead.
