New Town Won not Owings Mills

Teams from throughout the county converged on New Town High School last Tuesday to compete in the Baltimore County cheerleading competition, looking to punch a ticket to the regional round. Here's how each county team did: 1A: Sparrows Point was far above their county competition in the 1A class, scoring a 111.25, which puts them 5.05 points ahead of second place in the 1A East, as Havre de Grace scored 106.2. Pikesville was right behind finishing with a 102.3, good enough for fifth in the west, with breathing room between Boonsboro in 4th and Carver in 6th. The Wildcats narrowly avoided elimination in their region, scoring a 95.7, which sends them to Howard Community College as the only other team from the 1A West. Western Tech, Owings Mills, and Randallstown all competed as schools from the west, but their respective scores of 90.05, 83.8, and 79.15 were not good enough to advance. From the east side, Loch Raven was the eighth team, scoring 70.9 placing them eighth, but with Elkton High not competing next week, they will move forward as the seventh team. 2A: Just two 2A schools will be moving on to the next round, both coming from the west side. Hereford took home the county championship, finishing with a 113.45, closely followed by Eastern Tech at 111.65. The two schools will be moving onto regionals in second and third place, respectively. Lansdowne's score of 94.6 and Chesapeake's 92.6 placed them at ninth and tenth in the county, which is not high enough to move on. 3A: The Franklin Indians edged out Bel Air for the fourth seed in the 3A East, scoring a 111.4. New Town is the only other 3A team advancing from BCPS, scoring 105.9 and earning them the seventh and final spot. Patapsco, Overlea, Milford Mill, and Towson also competed, but none scored high enough to advance. The Patriots finished in eighth, scoring 99.5, the Falcons in seventh with 96.65, the Millers in eleventh with 88.9, and the Generals in twelfth with 67.65. 4A: BCPS teams make up four of the seven teams from the largest class moving on. Perry Hall took home the county championship with a 112.0, which puts them atop the East. Kenwood is close behind, as their 109.45 has them in third. Dulaney's 102.65 and Parkville's 99.55 were also good enough for both to advance as the fifth and sixth seeds. Woodlawn scored 94.7 and finished in eighth, Catonsville in tenth with 88.4 and Dundalk in eleventh at 78.8 round out the county. The regional competition is slated to take place at Howard Community College next week with the East Region competing on Tuesday and the West on Wednesday, both competitions will start at 6 p.m.

In the first week back from winter break, multiple Baltimore County girls basketball teams had at least two games, leading to plenty of incredible results from the week’s slate. Historic blowouts and close matches led the way in the five games of the week from January 5-9: Loch Raven: 74, Chesapeake: 6 The biggest blowout of the week belongs to Loch Raven, as the Raiders took down the Chesapeake Bayhawks in a 68-point win. The Raiders missed three shots in the first 30 seconds of the game, but a steal from senior Kensley Marcus led to freshman Kennadi Cloude scoring the game’s first points. From there, the team went on a twenty-point run before Chesapeake scored their first points of the game. Chesapeake’s final points of the game came on a lay-up just over halfway through the second quarter, as the Raiders went on a 34-point run in the contest’s final twenty minutes. Kensley Marcus led the scoring for Loch Raven, contributing 24 points in fifteen minutes, with Jadyn Williams adding eighteen and Jadon Conteh ten. Dulaney: 62, Lansdowne: 11 The Lions followed up a 45-point win over Randallstown with another blowout at home against Lansdowne. After several shots by both teams, Dulaney drained the game’s first points on a contested layup, and the team ran away with the game from there. The Lions continued a 10-3 run throughout the first quarter, and by halftime, the team led 34-9. The Vikings scored just two points in the second half, while giving up 28. By the end of the game, Lansdowne logged their biggest loss of the season, falling by 51 points. The Vikings’ leading scorer was senior Piper Graham, who contributed three points. Sparrows Point: 36, Carver: 32 The Wildcats traveled to the eastside of the county to take on the Pointers in what proved to be one of the lowest scoring matchups of the week. Carver clung to a narrow 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but their offense faltered in the second, scoring just four while the defense allowed eleven. In the third, neither team scored double digit points, but Sparrows Point had taken a four-point lead going into the final eight minutes. With both teams tacking on eleven in the final quarter, the Pointers held a 36-32 victory. For a team with a majority of underclassmen, junior Elisah Guity led the scoring for Carver, contributing nineteen with eleven total rebounds as well. Milford Mill: 40, New Town: 33 The 31 Titans traveled to take on their undefeated rivals at Milford Mill Academy on Friday evening. The game started off with strong defense on both sides, as the two teams combined for just seven points halfway through the first. After the slow start, there were 19 points scored by the end of the first, but by halftime, the Millers clung to a narrow 17-15 lead. Milford extended the lead by two points over the next eight minutes, then another three in the final quarter, winning the rivalry match 40-33. Pikesville: 101, Owings Mills, 7 On Friday, the undefeated Panthers hosted an Owings Mills team with just one win during the regular season. It took just seven seconds for sophomore Qaidence David to score the game’s first points, and by the end of the quarter, Pikesville held a 35-0 lead. The Golden Eagles scored their first points of the game just under three minutes into the second quarter, but by halftime, Pikesville held a 57-2 lead. Owings Mills put up another five in the third quarter, but Pikesville crossed the triple-digit line with a long two-pointer with 75 seconds left, finalizing the first 100-point game in Baltimore County this season. For Pikesville, Kyndall Richardson, Mariah Jones-Bey, Qaidence David, NyJae Malikali-El, and Skylah Anderson each crossed the ten point mark in the blowout.

Over winter break, Baltimore County’s athletes took very little time off, focusing on improving individual skills and their team’s performance. Some girls basketball teams held normal practices, while others traveled to face opponents seldom on their schedules. Here is how a few Baltimore County teams utilized their winter breaks: Carver: Head coach Kevin Perry explained that his team has taken the break to focus on improving fundamentals in their team practices this winter. The Wildcats opened their season with a home win against Overlea and a road win against Green Street before going 2-2 ahead of the break. The team’s focus is solely on two games in this first week back, as they will travel to Sparrows Point on Wednesday and host Towson on Friday. Catonsville: The Comets participated in the 695 Holiday Hoops tournament, winning their bracket after playing two games. The team took down the Tuscarora Titans 48-28 in their first game, followed by a 53-28 win over the Edmonson-Westside Red Storm. New Town: The Titans participated in the 695 Holiday Hoops tournament, facing off against Manchester Valley from Carroll County and Largo from Prince George’s. After dropping their first game 51-33, the team bounced back, as they defeated the Lions 55-42. In the win, senior Makiah Pollard scored 23 points in the second half, with eleven rebounds to add on. Perry Hall: The Gators participated in the Overlea holiday showdown, playing two games on Monday, December 29, and Tuesday, December 30. In game one, Perry Hall took down the Mervo Mustangs 53-23. Taylor Pollard was the Gator’s leading scorer, putting up 15 points with five steals. Denim Waters added nine and Deamya Ojo eight. In their second game, Perry Hall won again, this time against the Dunbar Poets, by a final score of 54-32. Perry Hall led by a narrow seven point margin at halftime, but Pollard’s seventeen total points and Ojo’s twelve rebounds propelled the team to the big win. Pikesville: The Panthers traveled to Salisbury to participate in the Governor’s Challenge, playing two games early last week. On day one, the team took down Queen Anne’s County High 50-27, and in the championship game on Tuesday, Pikesville triumphed against the Smyrna Eagles 55-47. Nyjae Malikali-El led the scoring for Pikesville in the championship, with nineteen points and seven steals, and also won the tournament’s skills competition. Freshman Kyndall Richardson also won the three-point challenge, bringing yet another trophy home for the five-time consecutive state champions. Towson: The Generals currently sit at the top of Baltimore County with a 5-0 record, highlighted by strong wins over Western Tech, Parkville, and Loch Raven. Eric Erhardt, the Generals’ head coach, explained that his team had practices as normal, and that the team typically does not participate in holiday tournaments. Towson will look to continue their undefeated run with away games against Patapsco and Carver this week.

In todays exciting match we had Elgin Guthrie, Tyler Burris, and Kennedy stepping up with timely goals today and once again Aryaehl and Chris coming through with timely defense to keep the Comets excellent striker from doing more damage. The undermanned Titans of New Town fought the Woodlawn Warriors to a final score of 5 to 5. With timely goals from Elgin Guthrie and Tyler Burris and hard defense from Kennedy, Chris, and Aryaehl the Titans started their season off strong and can only get better as the season goes on. Woodlawn is to be commended for their aggressive scoring ability and we wish them well on the rest of their season. Asst. Coach Dunn - New Town Allied Team.
🏈🏈 VARSITY FOOTBALL 🆚 Catonsville vs. New Town GAME RECAP 1ST HALF - Apologies are in order as I arrived late missing the first TD drive of the New Town Titans. They kicked the ball off to the Comets. The Comets attempted to early establishing their run game. Titans defense was quick to the ball trying to close gaps immediately. To counter, Catonsville tried to gain leverage running to the outside. On offense, Titans broke away a huge run that was called back by a penalty. However, just before the end of the half, Titans scored off a deep pass, the receiver could not be brought down. 2ND HALF - The Comets were able to move down the field and put points on the board. They neared the goal line, punched it in but could only get 6 after having their field goal attempt blocked. Successful plays in this was assisted by some flags being thrown. There appeared to be a lot of those in the second half. New Town suffered a few big plays being called back after a penalty. Catonsville had some calls on them as well. Not going to play the blame game, just addressing the consistency of penalty flags can become frustrating for teams and extend the length of the game. Kind of felt that frustration for all involved. I understand, we haver to let the players play, coaches coach, and the referees ref. CONGRATULATIONS to New Town on the victory. Great speed and agility. Keep shining and grinding, doing your best. The number 3. Seed Largio Lions defeat the number 1. Seeded New Town Titans in a 48-50 nail biter in the CLASS2A boys championship. The game started off slow with both teams demonstrating strong defenses until player number 0 Jaylen Johnson put points on the board. Both teams struggled off of missed 2 pointers and shot clock Violations, but Newton Had the upper advantage with scoring multiple shots in the paint, ending the quarter with New town leading 10-9. Largo wouldn’t hold back despite the slow offensive performance, hitting multiple layups and from number 3 star play Cameron Ward, pressuring into the paint and hitting an impressive Alley Oop dunk. Largo capitalized the momentum ending the half 23-24 with the lead. Largo remained dominating entering the second half, with Ward and number 0 Jalen Johnson bursting onto the court with dunks. Ward would stay strong in defense but gave up two technical fouls, leading to New town showing some life with free throws and three pointers, ending the quarter with Largo winning 31-38. New Town seemed to come out of a dark tunnel entering the 4th quarter. Despite Largo leading 37-44 with 5 minutes remaining, only taking two threes to keep the score 43-44. Largo would score some crucial points from a free throw and a 3 pointer from Jared Mobley to take the score up 43-48. New town later scored a crucial three pointer in hopes of making this comeback story true, but Star player Ward demonstrated strong defense and rebounded for a strong dunk. The score remained 46-50 with 40 seconds remaining until New Town scored a needed layup. New Town stopped the clock several times with fouling, later leading to a Ward free throw. Ward ended up missing the dagger to a New town team giving 18 seconds left for New town to throw a shot up. New town player #2 Tyriq Liggins possessed the ball and hit a very dangerous crossover leaving him space to shoot. Liggins took up the three pointer in hopes of a game winner but hit off the rim as time wear out. Largo became back to back state champions as New town took the title of runner ups, both teams able to look back on the season and call it a success.
The 1-seed New Town Titans took on the 3-seed Largo Lions at the Xfinity center in College Park on Friday afternoon. New Town came into the game following a double overtime 82-74 victory against Middletown while the Lions are coming off an overtime upset against Dunbar where they won 70-64. The first half was a rollercoaster of lead changes, but ended with Largo leading by one. Largo forward Cam Ward led both teams in points with 10 at the break. Despite growing their lead to 7 by the end of the third quarter, the Lions didn’t have the game squared away. With just over 2 minutes left in the game, New Town fought to come back to just one point down. After a foul, Ward stepped to the line to take two crucial shots, but missed them both. New Town had their shot to win the game. After several Largo fouls, the Titans missed a two pointer with one second left. Largo pulled out the narrow upset, taking down the top seeded Titans 50-49. Can Ward remained the Lions’ points leader with 20 throughout the game while Justus Stanton led with 13 for the Titans. This game marks two consecutive state titles for the Largo Lions. Congratulations to both teams for the achievement of making it to this game.
