Gavin Sheets, Gilman ‘14, and Jackson Merrill, Severna Park ‘21, play right next to each other in the Padres outfield, but the two lefties took vastly different journeys to reach San Diego. As a Severna Park senior, Jackson Merrill hit an even .500 with a program record of 13 home runs for the Falcons in 2021. MLB Pipeline ranked him as the 79th-best prospect that year. The Padres were highly impressed with his athleticism and drafted him 27th overall in one of the biggest draft day jumps. He became the first player since 2000 to be drafted out of Severna Park. The then-shortstop rocketed through the minor leagues to become a consensus top 15 prospect in baseball before the 2024 season. The Padres challenged him to learn to play center field in early 2024 and push for a spot on the team. Without playing a single game at the Triple-A level, Merrill made the major league roster as the starting centerfielder. The Padres' rookie hit the ground running offensively and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting. Merrill posted the third-most valuable season for a Padres centerfielder in franchise history, according to wins above replacement. He has continued the strong production this season with a .304 batting average and strong defense. Gavin Sheets signed a minor league deal with the Padres on Feb. 9 after a down 2024 with the Chicago White Sox. He made the major league roster after impressing in spring training with six home runs, tied for the MLB lead. Sheets immediately rewarded the team's confidence on Opening Day with a pinch-hit game-tying home run in his first at-bat, fueling the Padres' comeback win against the Atlanta Braves. Gilman Baseball Head Coach Larry Sheets, Gavin’s father and a former MLB player, spoke with CSZ Network and emphasized how the change of scenery unlocked a new level for Gavin. “***'s put him in a great setting in San Diego. The coaches are terrific and they were able to break down his flaws and get him back on the right track…You've got to feel like you're wanted and I think that's the other thing that's going on in San Diego that didn't go on in Chicago,” Coach Sheets said. Sheets made multiple key adjustments to turn the page on his 2024 season. His contact quality improved with a 54.2% hard hit rate, the highest of his career. Sheets also took massive strides against fastballs with a .615 slugging percentage near the top of the league. The 29-year-old has been one of the best hitters in baseball with 12 home runs, 42 RBIs and an .801 OPS. Sheets has also supplied numerous clutch moments for the Padres. He has the fourth most home runs in the National League to tie the game or take the lead. With his breakout success, Sheets could become an All-Star for the first time. No Maryland high school player has made an All-Star Game as a designated hitter since Hall of Famer Harold Baines in 1999. Beyond the accolades, Sheets has already given back to his community. Coach Sheets described how his son’s success impacts the current Gilman roster. “To see somebody come from Gilman, which is a small school…and know that they've been able to make it, I think it just gives you hope. A lot of the kids are excited about watching his progress and I think deep down they feel like ‘well shoot, if he can do it, then you know I can do it as well,’” Coach Sheets said.
Rayuan Lane III graduated from Gilman School 2021, where he was a standout three-sport athlete. In football, he earned All-MIAA honors in 2019 and made headlines by scoring seven touchdowns in just two games during the COVID-shortened 2020 season. Committing to the Navy, Lane made an immediate impact at the collegiate level, starting seven games as a freshman. He recorded 37 tackles, four pass deflections, one interception, and a forced fumble. Over his final three seasons with the Midshipmen, Lane became a cornerstone of the defense, posting at least 65 tackles, two forced fumbles, and two interceptions each year. His consistent performance earned him third-team All-AAC honors in 2023 and first-team All-AAC recognition in 2024. His on-field production and leadership qualities caught the attention of NFL scouts, leading to his selection by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, an impressive feat coming from a military school. 🥍 🥍 ON THE HUNT AGAIN WITH MY ALMA MATER Gilman vs Calvert Hall The weather was absolutely wonderful. Got right into the action as I missed the opening score by Gilman; it just happened so fast. I may be wrong, but these MIAA teams seem to go at a faster pace, so scoring quick appears to be essential. Also the 80 second shot clock could be a factor. Whatever the case, I am learning to keep the record button on a little longer. Calvert Hall answered back in few minutes later tying the game up. Then as second quarter began, the Hall began to spread their lead scoring three goals in a few minutes. Calvert Hall has something special, almost like the whole team is just in sync (on defense, midfield, and their attackers) especially against a very good Gilman team (Don’t sleep on Gilman!!!). Photo courtesy of Spalding Boys' Volleyball Instagram Archbishop Spalding Varsity Volleyball is undefeated in the lead of MIAA’s A Conference, with last year’s champions trailing behind in second place with a 9-1 record, the Mount St. Joseph Gaels. The Gaels’ only loss this season was to the Cavaliers in August. The two will face off again this Friday at Spalding, giving the Cavaliers the home-field advantage. On the other end of the conference, the Friends School of Baltimore has an an unfortunate season with 9 losses and no wins. They will play Gilman at home tomorrow. This season, Friends has only scored a total of 2 points throughout their nine games, which they hope to change at tomorrow’s game.
Ever since he first swung an oversized club as a 2-year-old, Bennett Espenshade has been fascinated by golf. And his natural curiosity, combined with a strong desire to get better and the willingness to put in the work, turned the Gilman School senior into the top-ranked junior golfer in Maryland and one of the top 100 junior golfers in the world. “Golf is so different than any other sport,” said Espenshade, who is ranked No. 94 in the Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) world rankings. He most recently finished 23rd at the Dustin Johnson World Junior Championship on March 1-3 in Myrtle Beach and won the Middle Atlantic Amateur Championship last fall, a wire-to-wire win against a good field that Espenshade called one of his proudest moments as a golfer. “You can play the same course every day of your life, and no round will ever be the same,” he said. “Perfection is impossible. There are so many things you can do [with golf] and so many different ways to play it. Two games could have major implications for seeding and matchups in the playoffs. Mcdonogh traveled to Boys Latin their first loss of the season with a 12 -10 victory. The Eagles stifled Boys Latin’s attack allowing only 3 goals in the first half. The Lakers woke up in the second half, getting the game to 11-10 with 5 minutes left. Mcdonogh was able to hold them off and add an extra goal with 35 seconds left. In a low scoring game Calvert Hall came away with a 7-6 win in overtime, with Calvert Hall tying the game 6-6 with 2 minutes remaining in the 4th. After a tough conference loss to current conference leaders Boys Latin, Calvert Hall has rebounded to win 3 in a row and find themselves in a title eliminator against Gilman. Gilman must reset after a thrilling game that saw them defeated 17-15 against Saint Paul’s. With Boys Latin undefeated in conference play and unlikely to lose 2 of their last 4 games, whichever team loses will be unlikely to win the conference. Stay in the Zone to see if Calvert Hall continues their push for title contention.
