Frederick High School pulled off an impressive win over Marriotts Ridge in the state quarterfinals. Franklin brought the energy and support, refusing to back down from the Mustangs’ home crowd. Family, friends, and even the cheerleaders helped shift the momentum as the boys battled on the court. In the end, Franklin held on for a hard-fought 2-point victory. Overall, it was a great game, with both teams showing determination and fighting until the final buzzer.

 📍Marriotts Ridge HS, Marriottsville, Maryland 📝 Kmillz (MFVAllSportsNetwork) MFV arrived to what looked like to be a sold out Mustangs arena at Marriotts Ridge High School in Marriottsville, Maryland. (SHOUTS to CSZScores, as I met their student ambassador. Hope you are successful in your new opportunities on the rise!!!) The cheerleaders for Frederick traveled down to support their Cadets joining alonside a big crowd of Cadets’s fans. BUT, the Mustang fans packed out the house as well. The Marriotts Ridge Student section arrayed in American colors as their theme for the night. It looked like a never ending cycle as the Ridge staff directed numbers of them over to the student section. What I didn’t expect was the intense and loud atmosphere on the horizon. The Cadets team came out clapping and showing they were ready to play 32 minutes of basketball. Mustangs had a cool vibe and the team was rocking some old school warm up uniforms. They looked completely focused and locked in. A huge battled was brewing in the midst of a western Howard County high school. 1ST HALF - The beginning quarter was a knock down drag out fight for some points to get on the board. Both teams displayed excellent defense, causing their offenses to really struggle getting open lanes to drive the ball closer inside for points. By the second quarter things started to pick up as the Mustangs held a fair lead of 7 going in to the half, 23-16. 2ND HALF - The Cadets began to fight back pulling the score between 3 points at one point. HOWEVER, it was last minutes of the 4th period that became critical. After listening to the echoes of loud voices all around, cheerleaders having their own little summersault routine wars, and student sections yelling at one another; this game was decided in the last two minutes being tied at 42-42. The Mustangs had put up quite a fight to stay in front. It was Frederick’s guard, #10 AJ Spencer who scored the final basket, leaving the Ridge only 5 seconds to either tie, or hit a long ranged three for the win. I gave Spencer the name Tricky Fingers, because he was creating critical turnovers leading up to these moments. Marriotts Ridge just didn’t see AJ coming at those pivotal times. CONGRATULATIONS to the FREDERICK CADETS, who pulled off an awesome 44-42 victory, and they advanced on to the Semifinal round in states. SO EXCITED FOR YOU CADETS. Keep that flame burning. MUCH LOVE to the MARRIOTTS RIDGE MUSTANGS, you guys played with fire, intensity, and passion. Proud of you guys. You are awesome. OMGGGG you guys. I literally cannot breathe right now. My hands are shaking so bad typing this. I just witnessed the most INSANE moment of my entire LIFE and I HAVE to word vomit it all out right now or I will actually explode. So. You all know I have season tickets. Row 12, right behind the home dugout. I see everything. But NOTHING could have prepared me for what happened tonight. It was the 89th minute. The game was tied 1-1. The energy was so tense, you could feel it in your teeth. And then... it happened. Josh Ventura gets the ball just past the halfway line. He starts running. And when I say running, I don't mean normal running. It was like he was gliding. The way he weaved through those two defenders... it was like they were moving in slow motion. My bestie Sarah literally GRABBED my arm and her nails are now permanently embedded in my skin, I don't even care. He gets to the edge of the box and this HUGE defender comes sliding in. It was a surefire foul. A penalty. But Josh... HE DIDN'T GO DOWN. I SWEAR ON MY LIFE. He just... jumped. But not a normal jump. He did this like, little hop and the ball just stuck to his foot. It was magic. ACTUAL MAGIC. He was in the air for like, a full three seconds, I'm not exaggerating. Time literally stopped. I could see the little specks of dirt flying up around his cleats. And then... the shot. It wasn't a kick. It was a whisper. It was so quiet. The ball just... curled. It curled like a rainbow, but faster than anything I've ever seen. It went around the goalie. Not over him. AROUND him. Like it had a mind of its own. The net didn't even ripple, it just sort of... accepted the ball. Like it was always meant to be there. There was this one second of complete, dead silence. Everyone's brains had to reboot. We all just saw the impossible. AND THEN THE STADIUM WENT ABSOLUTELY NUCLEAR. I WAS SCREAMING. SARAH WAS SCREAMING. The guy next to me who is usually so quiet was PICKING ME UP AND SHAKING ME. I was literally being hugged by strangers. It was pure, unfiltered chaos and it was BEAUTIFUL. And Josh? He just turned around. Didn't even smile. Just looked at the crowd with this calm, intense look in his eyes, like he knew it was going to happen all along. He just tapped his chest twice and pointed to the sky. THAT'S IT. I'M DECEASED. My phone is blowing up. My timeline is going insane. Everyone is posting the clip. I've already watched it back 47 times and it makes less sense every time. HOW DID HE DO THAT? Josh Ventura didn't just score a goal tonight. He created art. He bent reality. Since coach Emonte Hill Sr. took over as head basketball coach of the Frederick Cadets, they’ve had their eyes set on a championship. Coming into the 2024 campaign, it had been 42 years since the program hoisted a Maryland state championship trophy. After a complete team effort against Whitman in the Class 4A state championship, that number shrank to zero. Frederick was loaded with talent and was carried by a big three of seniors Elwyne Wordlaw, David Dorsey, and Ivan Quijada. Quijada splashed five 3-pointers, four of which came in the first half. He finished the night with 17 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Dorsey finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Wordlaw gives all the credit to coach Hill for the teams’ success. “We could get selfish at times, but Coach Hill did a great job of making us play team basketball.” After a 10-0 Whitman first-quarter run, the Cadets responded with a 31-6 run of their own across the rest of the first half. The rest was history as Frederick controlled the pace of the game in the second half, securing a 74-49 victory. This squad was loaded with talent, and the team was hungry. “The entire season we thought we were the best team in the state. Frederick High hadn’t won a state championship since 1982, so to do that for our city felt amazing,” Wordlaw said. Although Wordlaw is graduating and taking his talents to Shepherd University, he has confidence in Coach Hill and next year’s team. “Coach Hill does such a great job that by the time the season comes around I think they will be great.” Frederick will look to continue the positive momentum into next season and extend their 15-game winning streak.

The MPSSAA Basketball Championships in College Park wrapped up Saturday night with three big-time winners. Largo (2A Boys), Baltimore Polytechnic (3A Girls) and Frederick (4A Boys) all went home champions in different fashions, but in the end solidified themselves as the top teams in their classifications. The Largo Lions found themselves in a battle against Carver Vo-Tech for three quarters before eventually pulling away for the win, 66-52. Junior Cam Ward, one of the top talents in the state of Maryland, finished with 29 points, 16 rebounds, six blocks, five steals and two assists, leading his team to a state championship just one year after falling short as a runner-up. "I wanted to see how I could be like a community builder as far as... no one as far as like my caliber has ever stayed at a public school," Ward said. "Rather than go play for like a WCAC school, prep schools, I decided to stay home and it worked out in the end. So I mean, I've gotten everything that I wanted to achieve from public school. So it's it's really all because of [my teammates]." Baltimore Polytechnic took on Oakdale in a game that was controlled from start to finish by the Engineers, 45-18. This marked the second title in three seasons for the Engineers. Poly racked up 24 turnovers by the Bears and held them to just 6-35 shooting from the floor in the contest. Arianna Makumi led the way with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Poly. "It feels good, no time is ever going to be the same," Poly had coach Kendall Peace-Able said. "So every team is different. Even though some of them had the opportunity to say that this is their second time in three years, but no team is the same. Every feeling is gonna be different." Walt Whitman got off to a good start, but the early advantage was short-lived. Frederick's David Dorsey woke up in the first quarter and ignited his team, finishing the contest with 14 points and eight rebounds. Frederick took home the title, 74-49, marking the sixth in school history, but first since 1982. The Cadets really kicked things into gear in the second quarter, beating the Vikings 22-7 over that eight-minute stretch. There was nothing Whitman could do to combat the Cadets in the second half as Frederick finished the game shooting 58.3% as a team and knocked down 12 triples. "Dream come true. Dream come true is the first thing that comes to my mind," Frederick head coach Emonte Hill said. "I'm talking about it all the time, as much as coaches do for kids, these kids have led me on a journey that is amazing. Unbelievable. [I'm] living a dream through them as a former cadet, never gotten never got this experience. And I told him all the time, 'I'm living my dream day by day. And *** is here to support us through family atmosphere.' Man... these kids are special." That wraps up another season of MPSSAA Champions crowned on the hardwood and attention now turns to the spring sports season, starting March 21.
