🏈🏈 THURSDAY NIGHT JV FOOTBALL @ THE 300 🆚 Frederick Douglass vs. Laurel JV Football For about two years now, I have been asked to cover a JV football game at the 300. Finally, I was able to make it out to a JV game. The atmosphere at the 300 (Laurel High School) was great. Fans were out supporting their JV teams. Weather was at a nice temperature perfect for football. The Spartans were looking to capitalize on their home field advantage. This was a night to make a big impact on the county. Frederick Douglass, wanted to make sure victory was in their hands and not the home field opponent. The stage was set for an epic battle: The Frederick Douglass Eagles coming in to Laurel High School to take on the Laurel Spartans 1ST QTR The Spartans received the kickoff and had a good footing as they march down the field. A few handoffs were successful, then Douglass DLine began filling the gaps stopping Laurel’s advancement. Laurel took some a chance and did convert on 4th down, unfortunately it didn’t lead to adding points on the board. The ball was then in the hands of Douglass, who also was able to move the ball for a bit. This was pretty much a back and forth round with no one scoring. 2ND QTR The beginning of the quarter all the way to nearing the end, pretty much stayed consistent with the flow of the previous period. There were a few missed opportunities on both sides; even though both teams were successful at freezing each other’s drives. Then under two minutes left in the half, the Eagles made good field position off a punt return. An unexpected pass ensued and the Eagles were now 1st and goal. Touchdown, then a failed to succeed at a 2pt conversion, still put them in a good position. The pressure now was on Laurel to answer back. Not enough time though because the half ended. 3RD & 4TH QTRS With the Eagles determined to add to their lead, they didn’t expect an onside sick from the Spartans in the beginning of the 3rd. Spartans recovered. Now, a new momentum shift began to take place. The ball was in Laurel’s hands. Struggles from the previous quarters arose, and they were unable to complete the drive. That didn’t slow down their fight to win. Douglass added another touchdown and a made the two point conversion this time. The fourth, was a lot like the first. However, nearing the end the Spartans tried to air the ball out; a nice through got intercepted. This turnover allowed the Douglass Eagles to run the clock out and secure their victory. Applause is warranted for the effort and fight the Spartans put in. Your energy and desire to win is in the right place. Like coaches already instruct, take practices seriously, coming in ready to work. I don’t doubt you’ll gain good ground as the season moves on. Eagles of Frederick Douglass, congratulations on your win. Hard work paid off, happy to see you guys accomplish one of your goals. It’s a new week now Eagles and Spartans. Take in the lessons, and build from the wisdom of your coaches. Now go and be great!!!!!
