https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QONFvSBCroM 🏈🏈 2025 HOMECOMING GAME 🆚 Allegany x Fort Hill 📍 Cumberland, Maryland (Fort Hill HS) Driving out to western Maryland, you are given some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. In the fall, it is even more spectacular by added beauty from the fall season’s changing of the leaves. MFV’s wonderful two hour drive landed him at Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Md. Upon entering the field, I was greeted by Fort Hill’s principal, Candy Canaan. She took time out of her busy schedule to make sure we were well accommodated for this special Homecoming event. This event is part of one of the Great American Rivalries matchups happening around the state of Maryland. These two schools, Allegany High School and Fort Hill, use to meet regularly on Thanksgiving Day for this game. Due to changes and playoffs extending, the game was moved back, and is held annually on November 1st, right after Halloween. Like the beautiful scenery on the ride up, the Allegany vs Fort Hill homecoming is treated with excellence. It was almost like a high school football Super Bowl. Decorations, and much planning go in to this event. With over 1000 fans on site, they were thoroughly enjoying the beginning festivities. Then I looked up, and out comes the Sentinels down their famous steps former players come down for decades before games. Allegany also entered with cheers from their crowd. The atmosphere was set for one of the biggest rivalries to fire off. Let’s just see how this game went down. 1ST HALF One of the Sentinels alumni schooled MillerFlow on how the field conditions use to be back in the day. It took a punishing from being used in many capacities. The turf on Greenway now, still handles quite a lot of use. Fort Hill desired to start that use by receiving the kick in the first half, after winning the coin toss. Their motive seemed to be: let’s get out there and handle business immediately. And they did, attacking the Campers with Fort Hill’s signature running scheme. Say what you want, this type of attack is very difficult to stop. Without their former RB Jabril Daniels, the Sentinels adjusted with senior Braelyn Younger ( #0 ), and junior Carson Bender ( #25 ) picking up most of the snaps. Younger led the Sentinels to the first points off a 30 yard run in to the end zone. However, the Campers looked to even the score with their own attack. Allegany too, had a committed running attack, with ( #25 ) Khiante Bible taking some hand offs in their first drive. The Sentinel’s defense though posed a threat, and stopped the Campers success on their first drive. From this moment on, this was the momentum of the first half as Sentinel’s went on to lead 57-0. 2ND HALF The mercy rule was now in effect, and Coach Alkire offered some of his other stars and chance to make themselves a moment. The Campers took advantage and scored two touchdowns before the game ending quickly from a running clock. However, both sides gained the valuable experience needed for what they both are coming in to next, PLAYOFFS!!! BEST WISHES TO BOTH. TO THE CAMPERS, continuing growing and learning from the things you know need work. Love your energy and drive to never give up. KEEP that, and move forward!!!! TO THE SENTINELS, congratulations on the homecoming victory. CONTINUE being dominant on the field. LOVE your support you show one another cheering on every teammate on the team. 🏈🏈 FOOTBALL GAME OF THE WEEK @ Fort Hill High School 🆚 Dunbar vs. Fort Hill 📍 Fort Hill HS, Cumberland, Maryland The drive through Western Maryland was absolutely gorgeous. Left our home early in order beat traffic, get a glimpse of some great mountain views (hills I call them) and a taste of the small city in Allegany County named Cumberland. This city is known for having a deep rooted love for sports, seeming to shutdown when a game is happening. Well, this night the city’s Fort Hill Sentinels were looking forward to some friendly competition between the powerhouse and state champ winning Dunbar Poets. Fort Hill coming off a win against Northern Garrett, and Dunbar a loss vs Virginia team, Stonebridge (I did learn the game was cut short due to weather). The stage was set to see how Fort Hill and Dunbar would handle one another. 1ST QUARTER - Dunbar won the toss electing to receive in the second half. Fort Hill took the kick. They only move the ball a little down the field. Dunbar the same, as this quarter both defenses held one other to punting the ball. It was pretty much a back and forth battle between the two. 2ND QUARTER - Dunbar advanced down the field adding the first six points to the scoreboard. In typical fashion, they kicked no field goals and went for two, which was unsuccessful. The ball was now in the Sentinels court to answer back. Plays later, the Poets increased their lead to 14, this time completing the two point conversion. The situation didn’t seem appealing for Fort Hill, however the coaches encouraged players to stay locked in and keep fighting. That they did. The half ended on a Poets catching a deep ball, where they were about to score again only time ran out. 3RD & 4TH QUARTERS - The Sentinels returned to the field looking ready after I’m sure some great words from head coach, Zack Alkire. However, I did overhear the Dunbar coaching staff looking to put the foot on the gas and end the game. They did have a two hour drive back to Baltimore, Md. Pretty much what happened. Dunbar continued adding points by using its speed and strength to stop the Sentinel run game. They added 16 more points shutting out Fort Hill. Many may think, Fort Hill finally played a team difficult for them. But this loss is reminiscent of last year’s defeat by Dunbar. I believe Coach Alkire will use the moment as a learning tool for his team down the road. A lot of lessons to be adhered to here. And for the Poets, this victory is exactly what they needed as they set their hopes back to Navy. Truly happy for both teams even though when they play, I don’t like to see neither lose. When considering Maryland’s top high school football programs, many people’s minds jump to schools such as St. Frances Academy, McDonogh, and Spalding. If they are only thinking about public schools, Quince Orchard, Milford Mill, and Dunbar are thought of. However, there is one program that is often overlooked despite having a tradition of dominance – Fort Hill High School. Tucked away in the heart of Allegany County, the Sentinels routinely put up numbers that most schools, not only in Maryland but throughout the entire country, can only dream of. Going into the 2024 season, Fort Hill boasted the highest winning percentage out of any high school, public or private, in the United States with a 740-183-17 record. Zack Alkire, Fort Hill’s head coach, got his start as an athlete in high school playing for the Sentinels. “After I graduated, I played a year at [Frostburg State University]... I came back here in 2008 and joined the staff then,” Coach Alkire recalled. In his first decade as a coach, the majority of his time was spent leading the freshman and junior varsity teams. When former head coach Todd Appel resigned from the school in the summer of 2020, Coach Alkire took over full-time as the head varsity coach. Every year since, the Sentinels have won the 1A state championship. Between the 2021-2023 seasons, the team lost just one game, a 30-8 week six loss to Mountain Ridge during the 2022 campaign. When reflecting on playing on for such a consistently strong program, rising senior Carson Bender explained that the team views this level of success as “kind of an expectation. Teams before us won a lot… we need to play to that level, prepare, and work hard. We hold ourselves to that standard.” The 2024 season for the Sentinels continued to build on their legacy. Following their week one victory against Northern Garrett, the team traveled to Baltimore City to take on the reigning 2A/1A champions, the Dunbar Poets. On the road against this tough opponent, Fort Hill was defeated 26-13, their first loss in almost two years. Despite the result of the game, Coach Alkire wasn’t concerned, explaining his team “had a lot of young guys… we essentially had a brand new starting lineup. There were a lot of growing pains, and we made mistakes that they were able to capitalize on.” Finishing the season with a 7-2 on the field record while winning their final four games by a combined score of 208-9, Fort Hill steamrolled their first three playoff opponents: Allegany, Clear Spring, and Cambridge South-Dorchester. The state semi-final game against Perryville was the toughest competition that the Sentinels have seen since their 28-7 loss against Briar Woods, the Virginia High School League Class AAAAA runner-ups. Going into the game, the Panthers had only allowed five total points in the playoffs, with two coming on a safety in round three against Patterson Mill. Going into the game against this strong defense, Coach Alkire knew that his team needed “to play our style of football, ground and pound,” while also keeping their holding their offense to as few points as they could. Fort Hill won the game, advancing to the state championship for the fourth consecutive season, this year matching up against Northern Garrett. In the game, the Sentinels attempted just one pass while rushing for over 350 total yards. The team was led by Garrett College football commit Jabril Daniels, who ran for 249 yards by himself. Fort Hill’s quarterback, Noah House, explained that he “prefers some action, but it was better just to get points on the board.” This strategy paid off, as the Sentinels took down the Huskies with a final score of 35-0. Looking ahead to the 2025 season, rising senior Braelyn Younger explained that his goal is simple: “Be better than last year.” This season, Fort Hill has a chance at redemption in a week two home game against Dunbar. Additionally, the Sentinels face a tough non-conference schedule, with back-to-back games against Hollidaysburg (a Pennsylvania Class AAAAA quarterfinalist) and Bridgeport (the reigning West Virginia Class AAA champion). -- I’d like to thank Fort Hill head coach Zack Alkire, along with athletes Noah House, Braelyn Younger, Carson Bender, and Neek Taylor, for joining me for an in-person interview at Greenway Avenue Stadium in Cumberland. The after halftime, Fort Hill regained momentum, and secured the victory. Awesome!!! Fort Hill High School has claimed its fourth consecutive state 1A football championship, capping off a remarkable season that tested the team's resilience. The Sentinels faced an uphill battle this year, making their playoff run on the road after having to forfeit multiple wins due to an ineligible player. Despite the setback, they persevered and earned their place in the championship game. Their toughest challenge came in the state semifinals against Perryville. Trailing 14-0, Fort Hill mounted a comeback, shutting out Perryville in the second half. The defense held firm with a crucial fourth-down stop on Perryville’s final drive, securing the victory and advancing them to the state title game. In the championship showdown, senior running back Jabril Daniels delivered an amazing performance, rushing for 247 yards and scoring a touchdown. He reached 80 career touchdowns, while also breaking Fort Hill’s all-time single-season rushing record. With this victory, Fort Hill became only the second football program in state history to achieve a four-peat.

Approaching their 2nd round playoff game against Clear Spring High School, with 68 touchdowns to show, Fort Hill’s star running back Jabril Daniels needed 3 touchdowns to tie the Fort Hill’s career touchdown record of 71. Speaking to him through Instagram’s dm, Jabril seemed confident then to break his high school record of 71 TD’s at their homecoming game verse Allegany, jokingly telling MillerFlow, “I got you”. Understand the excitement and anticipation to see this young man supersede his school’s record. Fans from Cumberland and around the DMV could not wait any longer. Then it happened, the Sentinels play Clear Spring in the second round of the 1A MPSSAA playoffs, and off goes Daniels in to the end zone for his 72 touchdown of his career. The internet went bonkers. Congratulations to Jabril on breaking Fort Hill’s record. This is a monumental moment for Fort Hill, Cumberland, and the community around the DMV. We’re proud of you, and wish you more success in the years to come of your future. In a game that shook up the Maryland football hierarchy, Dunbar took the victory against Fort Hill and the momentum heading into conference play. Friday's 26-13 victory was a statement win for the Poets, who won their state leading 39th consecutive game. With Mervo providing the only challenge in Baltimore City last season, Dunbar has set the table for a 4th straight state championship run.
