https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDJE8w4HQYs 🏈🏈 MARYLAND GIRLS FLAG 2A-1A CHAMPIONSHIP 🆚 #3 Linganore vs #1 Calvert 📍Baltimore, Maryland (M&T Bank Stadium) The view was absolutely gorgeous as we headed down the steps towards the media room to set up for this fairly new championship in a new sport trying to be introduced across the state of Maryland. Ninety high school girls flag football teams have fought to where only two will be crowned victor. This was the first match for the Class 2A-1A champion. The scene was set for an exciting battle between the #3 seeded Linganore Lancers and the #1 seed, Calvert Cavaliers. Both teams repping for their school, county, and ultimately the state of Maryland. GAME RECAP The Cavaliers won the coin toss and elected to start first in the second half. So the Lancers began their drive quickly making good progress down the field. Running to the other end of the sideline, I caught the tail end of number 5 Makenna Roberts’ cooking her way in to the end zone for Linganore’s first TD. From this point, I could see this was going to be an electrifying game. No worries, because it looked as if Calvert was ready to make their move. The Cavaliers began their drive with a few little neat tricks but were unable to move the sticks, so they punted back to an eager Linganore. Lancers continued progressing, and with the help of a PI call, were back adding another 7 points to the score. Defensively too, Linganore was getting the flags pulled quickly and made it difficult for the Cavaliers to advanced. I got the sense Calvert was a bit shocked by their opponent’s play. Not playing conservative though, Calvert took the risk and went for it on 4th and long. Pass was incomplete and put the Lancers in great field position. It was long after Makenna scored again. Let me say this, being down by three scores did not slow the Cavaliers fight for the game. Good coaching and determination kept them right in it. They were able to keep the Lancers from adding an extra point. At this time, got to see #7 Amani Welch make some pretty smooth moves as she led her team down the field. Amani scored the first points weaving her way away from Lancers defenders. Cavaliers kept the momentum going, bringing Linganore to punt off the pursuing drive. Things were really looking upwards. Nearing the 1st half conclusion, Lancers had an opportunity to add to their lead, but it was cut short by the Cavaliers stopping the last pass of the half. Second half, Calvert advanced at the beginning. The drive fell short and returned to the control of the Lancers. The Lancers ended back in the end zone, even after having a penalty which moved them a distance back. The rest of the half consisted of Linganore protecting their lead as they advanced to become the 2025 2A-1A Maryland Girls Flag Football Champions. It was their first one and now memories have been loaded encouraging future successes. TO THE CAVALIERS, you ladies are AWESOME. You played a great game. You never gave up and fought up to the very end. KEEP THE GRIND ON in the off season. Looking forward to your future success!!! TO THE THE LANCERS, CONGRATULATIONS on your championship victory. Summer is almost over, which means fall sports are ahead of us. As football season is approaching within the next month, the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) is preparing for another season ahead. So, let’s see how the top ten teams fare this season. 1. North Point (12-2) Last year, the Eagles won the 4A/3A state title. Their 21-20 overtime win against Mergenthaler Vo-Tech helped lift them to victory, and they are looking to dominate again this season. This was their second state title within three years. 2.Westlake (10-3) The Wolverines finished atop of the SMAC standings last year. According to MaxPreps, William Drakeford Jr. was second in passing yards within SMAC; however, the incoming senior has transferred to Quince Orchard. But have no fear, the Wolverines' running back David Nnabuko will return for another season. 3. Patuxent (14-0) The Panthers made history in the 2A/1A state championship last season, stopping Dunbar from winning four straight championships in their 8-6 win. Patuxent went 14-0 on the year, and averaged 46 points a game. They look to continue their success in their program with another strong season ahead. 4. Calvert (6-5) Multiple players on offense have shown to be at the top of the leaderboard for their position. Senior quarterback Jordan Johnson led SMAC in passing yards with 1,530, while running back Andrew Douglass and wide receiver Tristan Thomas racked up top-five stats in rushing yards and receiving yards. 5. St. Charles (5-6) Statistically wise, St. Charles had multiple players contributing to their team last season. Quarterback Jayden Wills, along with Elijah Jones, will be returning for the Spartans. Despite their record, within their region, they recorded a 0.667 win percentage. St. Charles also made the 3A Maryland High School Football Playoffs and advanced to the second round after beating Chesapeake. 6. Huntingtown (10-3) Huntingtown, like North Point and Patuxent, competed in the 2A state championship, but fell to Stephen Decatur 13-12. In the regular season, they were on a six-game win streak. They will have wide receiver and free safety Brody Whittington return for them, who averaged 25 yards a game. 7. Northern (7-5) Northern began its season last year against strong opponents, such as Westlake. In the middle of the season, they were able to go on a four-game win streak. They were able to advance to the quarterfinals in the 3A Maryland High School Football Playoff bracket, but fell to Arundel 14-21. 8. Leonardtown (8-5) Before the 2024-2025 season, the Raiders saw improvements within their program. They went from a 6-6 record to an 8-5 record. They were able to secure top wins against North Point and St. Charles early last season. However, they are losing their top receiver Grady Mason, and running back Zach Meade. 9. Lackey (6-5) Lackey’s overall record of 6-5 has remained relatively stagnant over the past three years. Although they placed fifth within their region, there is still pressure to have some sort of improvement this upcoming season. 10. Great Mills (6-5) Last year, Great Mills went on a four-game win streak before losing their last game of the season. However, their losses come at the hands of top teams such as North Point and Patuxent.

Calvert High School Football is a program that takes a lot of pride in what they do, and it is shown in their play. With several players going on to play college football, the coaches have created an environment where players are constantly getting better and coming to put the work in. The team went 12-2 last season, ending with a close game to Dunbar being defeated 8-0 in the MPSSAA 2A/1A Championship. The team will be losing a majority of their top offensive players, including QB Dajuan Robinson (13 td) and Domain Wallace Jr. (17 td). However, Calvert has a lot of defensive returners including players to watch junior Cameron Wilson and senior King Jones. The slogan for the Calvert High 2024 Football season is #SETthePACE, emphasizing that a positive attitude changes everything. The team is ready to continue showcasing their talents this upcoming season, beginning with their home opener against Charles on September 6th. Calvert High School girls’ volleyball (11-6) made a run in the postseason, despite being the lowest seed to make the state volleyball championship out of all classes. Clenching the regional final versus Calvert County’s Huntingtown (11-4) was the big game that kickstarted their journey. After losing to them in the regular season, they were able to fight to come up with a 3-2 win. After defeating Huntingtown, they went on to defeat the defending state championship team, Williamsport, to clinch a spot in the state championship. As a bottom seed, Calvert High did not earn a bye and had to beat five teams in the playoffs to get to the championship. Ending their season as a runner-up to the Centennial Eagles in the 2A state championship, Calvert is proud of their run and attempt at the title, and hopefully will use the fuel from the loss to light a fire for next season.
